KH3D Regarding the Chamber of Waking... (another other topics maybe)

Recommended Posts

(EDIT: Aw crap, meant to type "among other topics" in the subject but botched it up)

I'm not sure whether to put this in "Writing," or here because it discusses spoiler-sensitive topics...but I figured here was best, because the people I'm looking for answers from frequent this forum... so yeah.

I've always been keenly interested in a few of the gaps in the Kingdom Hearts story - that is, parts of the narrative that we hear about secondhand but never actually witness. Of course, chief among those gaps are what Mickey was up to during the original Kingdom Hearts and what Riku was up to during 358/2 Days. Now, I know Nomura has already said that he's interested in telling these stories-

Presently there are 4 main untold stories to consider: "the period of the King's absence", "the period of Riku's absence", "Roxas's time in Organization XIII" and "Xehanort's past." In this case, the story of "the period of the King's absence" is set in the realm of darkness. I am examining a way to tell these 4 stories so I might be able to find a way to tell them soon.

with the latter two stories obviously covered by Days and Birth by Sleep, respectively, but at this point in the story's development and with a pretty clear direction in terms of future titles

involving the conflict between the 7 lights and 13 darknesses

I'm not so sure they're going to get the kind of attention that a lot of people seem to hope they'll get (i.e., they probably won't be made into games). I've decided, therefore, that it's fairly "safe" to give telling the Riku story a shot.

Now, before I actually start writing, there are a few kinks I want to work out in terms of details that will affect how certain characters play into the story. I'm trying to avoid outright inconsistencies by looking at the game text of the currently-released titles (namely Chain of Memories, Days, and II), but with 3D out in the wild I'm sure there are a lot of things that I'm totally clueless about. That said, I need your help, KH13 forums, to figure out whether some of these ideas are ever blatantly contradicted by the games.

But let's distinguish blatant contradictions from apparent ones. Let's use a recent revelation from 3D as an example:

In Kingdom Hearts II and Days, we were led to believe that in order to gain hearts, Nobodies needed to assemble Kingdom Hearts.

But 3D says that Nobodies can actually develop their own unique selves, and through that process grow their own hearts.

What seems like an apparent contradiction is actually a case where we're given faulty or incomplete information. This is different from a blatant contradiction, where we can completely confirm that something is outright not the case. There will be a lot of apparent contradictions in my story, because I'm going by this premise that "what we've been told isn't the whole truth." I'm also quite aware that many of these contradictions may become completely unresolvable based on future games... but that's a risk pretty much any fan-fiction takes, right?

Without spoiling too much about my upcoming story out the gate, here's the first major contradiction I want your input on before I start writing (minor 3D spoilers inside, so beware):

In Days, when Axel reports in with Saïx about his search for the Chamber of Waking, he denies having found it. Many have assumed that he's simply unable to find it in accordance with Yen Sid's proscription that the safeguards Aqua placed on Castle Oblivion can only be undone by Aqua.

I, however, make a different (somewhat baseless) assumption: the safeguards on the Chamber of Waking can actually be undone by anyone who holds Ventus as a friend in their hearts and is aware of the existence of the Chamber of Waking. On the surface this would only qualify Aqua, but Riku (who learns about the existence of the Chamber early in the story but is unaware of its significance) and Axel (who of course already knows about the Chamber because of his secret assignment) can also thanks to Ventus's connections to Sora and Roxas, respectively.

Xehanort/Xemnas understands the requirements and is aware of the room (somehow) but because of Terra's sort of limbo status is unable to fully make use of his (Terra's) friendship with Ventus (something which he is hoping to correct by experimenting with the Chamber of Repose), and therefore hopes to use Axel's friendship with Roxas to track down Ven as a potential vessel, thus explaining why Axel is chosen for the mission... of course failing to realize that Axel has betrayed him (in order to protect Roxas/Ven), and having discovered the true nature of what rests in the Chamber, lies in order to avoid reporting his discovery.

I kind of get the impression that he wasn't telling the whole truth anyway given the way the scene was scripted in Days (he basically dodges all of Saïx's questions he doesn't want to answer truthfully, and I got this vibe from his answer about the chamber as well), so I'm basically running with the idea "what if Axel found the Chamber of Waking and that became part of his impetus to protect Roxas?"

Anyway, if there's any of that that's blatantly contradicted (I only really know how 3D ends, not really anything about what happens during the plot), I'd like to hear it from you guys before I set the story in stone. I'm still in the process of developing the plot, so there aren't really any other major questions to speak of yet, but we'll see what comes up based on the feedback I get on this topic.

Well the heart growing part isn't much of contradiction, in Days Axel and Roxas' talk (in the day the game begins before it rewinds back to day 7) they talk about whether they have hearts, and how Axel feels like he gained a heart by being Around Roxas (same could be said for Xion).

I like your theory. It gives us an awfully larger bone to chew on, but thankfully avoids driving one to insanity with more questions. If your theory is right and since I'm leaning in that direction myself, I gladly anticipate the results because its sounds pretty cool!
