So I've been wondering exactly where Ventus came from. When I played BBS it didn't really make sense to me. Was he a resident of Destiny Islands or something? Benn about a year since I've played it too

 

It is just the opposite actually, Roxas's looks were derived from Ventus and he has Ventus's heart. Roxas's appearance is because of Ven's heart. though they have the same hearts they have different personalities though

Ven's heart is curently in Sora as of KH2 because Roxas joined with Sora and that put Ven's heart back in Sora

Meh, I don't think it really matters. Something about Ventus conviced Xehanort that he had the makings of a keyblade wielder, teh keyblade agreed, and he most likely kidnapped him from home or whatever. Or maybe it will have major and/or shocking significance later.

 

I think its implied that Terra may be an orphan, as he looks to Eraqus as a father. Maybe the same with Aqua.

 

I can't help but think of what they do in star wars to train new padawans, they pretty much find babies that are sensitive to the force and, with the parents permission, take them to be trained. I'd think that keyblade wielders wouild take in orphans or something like that that wouldn't be missed and give them a home, etc.

 

A lot of the problems with characterization and back story, etc., stem from the fact that Kingdom Hearts is a videogame; things like that don't really take presedence. The story itself is the main concern, particularly when it is already a prequal.

The novels said that Ven was an orphan who never knew his parents. Xehanort saw his potential took him in, planning to use him as his new vessel. (because we all know how much Xehanort likes little boys) The rest we know.

But arent the novels not canon?

Well in the absence of canon materials I use the official, non-canon sources to fill in the blanks.
