Sora is in the sleeping worlds, dreams of worlds that were not restored from Darkness. Due to seeing Ansem in a brown robe on the Destiny Islands, Riku unconsciously dove into Sora's dreams of those dreams to, alongside other spirits, act as a Dream Eater to protect him from Nightmares.

However, one only dreams when they are asleep, and once you are awake, you are no longer dreaming. That's the Drop system. Sora sleeping, and waking up so that Riku can be awake.
