The Best Science-Fiction show currently known is Babylon 5. Of everything I'm going to mention this has to be watched. Just do it in order.

The Twilight Zone: While not technically just science-fiction it had a lot of science-fiction episodes, and elements. Personally I think it is the best TV show ever, and Rod Serling is a mad genius.

Red Dwarf: A science-fiction comedy from BBC, it can have some serious messages but never forgets it's there to make you laugh.

Jekyll: A modern-day variation on the theme of Stevenson's classic 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' It's very well done, and is from BBC as well. I may be a bit of an Anglophile.

Gankutsuou: Imagine the Count of Monte Cristo with mech, lunar colonies, and other sci-fi elements and yoou have this anime that beats every other version in terms of accuracy to the novel, which is rather sad since the novel's height of technology was a pocketwatch.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager: I know you said you were into Star Trek, I just wasn't sure if you meant the Original Series or it in general. The series get better as you go along, just don't watch the Animated Series (it's terrible) or think Enterprise is related to Star Trek at all. It's not, it is a massive betrayal of everything the series ever stood for.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: A cross between Sci-fi and fantasy, it's based on the Full Metal Alchemist manga, but when it was first made into an anime the writers got... off script. So make sure to watch Brotherhood.

Death Note: A dark fantasy series that you've no doubt heard of before, featuring some of the most insanely brilliant individuals in fiction.

Robin Hood: A modern BBC version that is terrible, and may not realize it. They tried to make it clever and wity, but mostly made it stupid and campy. I can't watch it for too long, but there is something fascinating about how badlly some things can be done.

Bold titles mean they have to be watched in order

Let me just give you a heads up about these shows

Heroes: It's so full of plot holes you could run out of ink listing them all. The characters are rediculous and death has no meaning for anyone.

Battlestar Galactica: Imagine a Soap OPera where every time you saw a window you could see stars through it. That is this.

I don't know anything about Dr. Who or Stargate, but i know they are fairly popular, and they should be watched to find out if they actually are any good.

To Conclude you didn't ask but I have a couple suggestions for well-written Sci-Fi and Fantasy

I, Robot- Isaac Asimov

The Martian Chronicles- Ray Bradbury

Jurassic Park- Michael Crichton

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "Trilogy"- Douglas Adams

The Millennium Trilogy (After watching DS9)- Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens

Diskworld Novels- Terry Pratchett

Dragonlance Series- Margret Weis & Tracy Hickman

Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica- James Owen

The Belgariad- David Eddings

and of course...

The Lord of the Rings- John Ronald Reuel Tolkein

You have to watch Heroes. It's amazing... and the season finale ...WOW !!!!
