Chapter One:

It's two days until the reaping. Just two. I'm scared out of my mind. For some reason, the flowers around here in the orchards of District 11 aren't helping. My mom and my dad, apparently, have gone off somewhere. They wouldn't tell me, because it was "secret". They know if they keep secrets from me, I just become more and more anxious to find out about them. But right now isn't the exact time for finding out secrets. The reaping is coming. My District is frantic. My head still rings with the names of our last two tributes. Rue and Thresh. I saw it all on TV. How a girl named Katniss Everdeen covered her in flowers. And how Thresh died at the hands of Cato. I just wish they never showed Cato's death. He deserved it, but I could hear people start to gag at the Town Square watching it. Those mutts. I've figured out why there so human like. The collars on there necks with the District numbers on them. The way they communicate. It's like the soul of a tribute was put into a dog. How Cruel. Terrible. Sick. I would've gone mad if I had to face them. I startle when I hear a girls voice next to me.

"get your mind off the reaping, Key. Have some fun!" it says. I notice the voice. Maya. The fun loving, most cheerful girl ever. She never really understands anyone's sadness, pain, depression. She's a little self-centered. Annoying in my opinion.

I roll my eyes at Maya. "I can't. It's just two days away. I'd like it better If it were at least a month away." I reply. "aw come on, enjoy it!" she whines. "I can't!!" I snap. "you can!!" she snaps back. I don't dare reply, knowing she'll just keep it going. And the fact that she's at my house dosent help. I just sigh, putting my hands on my chin as I stare at the ground. I'm worried. For Maya. For me. What if we get our names pulled in the reaping? What If Maya volunteers? What if I volunteer? I try to stop thinking about, but I really can't. It's to hard. Well, not that it's hard, but it's stuck like glue in my head. But the problem is, ever since I watched the seventy-fourth Hunger Games, I've WANTED to be a tribute! Hard to beleive, but it's true. Now, I'm just chicken. Maya, she's excited. She's acting like its her sweet sixteen. She dosent turn sixteen for two months.

"Maya, why do you get so lucky?" I ask. It takes a while for her to answer. "I dunno. Why are you always so unlucky?" she asks. "I dunno." I reply, mocking her voice. I make talking motions with my hands. She getting annoyed. Good. I need to talk some sense into her. She rolls her eyes and looks out my door. Not like there's anything there. "hey look!! There's a rabbit out the window!!" she yells. Oh, how I wish I had such good eye sight. I look out of the window, noticing the chocolate brown bunny rabbit outside the window. I must admit, it's cute. Just the way IT looks, isn't so cute...

Chapter Two:

If I had to describe the "bunny" in one word, it would be horrifying. It was bloody all over. It had a half bitten ear, only three legs, a missing tail, a missing eye. It clearly somehow was able to escape from something trying to eat it. The surprising thing? It was still breathing...

Maya's look of happiness changed to a look of horror. Mine to. My head swung from side to side, looking for a weapon. I spotted my dads old bow and arrow. I ran ran for it. When I had a good grip on it, I ran outside, taking aim for the bunny. Once I got good aim, I shot it straight in the heart. I started breathing hard, running to the now dead bunny, and retrieving the arrow.

Maya, inside, just about was ready to faint. I ran back inside, putting down the bow and arrow, and shaking Maya. She startled for a second, then blinked her eyes a couple times. "are you ok?!" I asked. She nodded her head. I breathed a sigh of relief. She hated it when I had to kill animals. Thing is, I only kill hurt ones to put them out of their misery.

I decided to go out for some fresh air. Maya to. I grabbed her arm and half dragged her out. Poor thing. She could barely walk. Once outside, we both took breaths of fresh air to calm ourselves down. This time, I was actually able to get the Games out of my head. But not for long. Because Maya.

"do you think our names are going to be pulled?" she asked. Something snapped inside of me. I shrugged. A knot formed in my stomach. My face started to flare. Not with rage, but with nervousness. I really wish she didn't mention out names being pulled. I looked up at the sky and noticed it was getting late. Me and Maya both walked back inside, laying on the bed and pulling the covers over us. It didn't take long for us to fall asleep...
