Which writing style do you like better?

Posted

So, I have the starts of what may be my second major writing project. However, I can't decide on what style I should write it in. I have two methods, and I would like someone's thoughts. If don't like either, I would love some new suggestions!

(Style 2 is a standard paragraph format, Style 1 is my custom format.) Thanks for your opinions!

Style 1 is more like a movie/tv script, so its easier to read. I'd go with that one :)

Second version. It's much more fluid to weave dialogue within the exposition and elaborate on who is talking via description than to almost bluntly inform the reader that some one specific is talking via linte prompts like "First Man."

Ah, very quick responses, thank you! I'll wait and see if I get any more replies before making a final decision, but I shall take note of what both of you have to say.

1 for a play/movie. But if this is Fanfiction, number 2 without a doubt. I'm a writer myself.

Both styles give the impression of a novel. Scripts are more straightforward than what you have, so I assume this is for a novel. If so, then number 2. The first style isn't good form for a book.

@rainbowdash64

It isn't a fanfiction, it is going to be a one hundred percent original story. As for play/movie, I do envision it as a video game (should that be possible in my future), but as for now it won't be more than a story.

The main reason I am considering the first format is that I am not a fan of "[Dialogue Here]," ______ said. There are only so many ways I can mix it up before I feel like I am writing the same things over and over. Which messes with my head and makes me feel as if the overall quality is diminishing. I suppose that may all be in my head.

EDIT:

@Dracozombie

Yes, at this point it is a novel, and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Well, I think I am going to stick with the standard paragraph format (Style 2). Seems like it fits the feeling of a book/novel more than the script-like style. Thank-you all for your help! You made a tough decision easier!

The second one sounds more like a book style while the first sounds more like a script IMO. So I would have to go with the second one.

Contrary to others, I actually like 1 since I'm a fan of Shakespeare and read Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet , and King Lear. Have you considered doing both?

I did consider doing both, but the time it took to convert that first chapter from one style to the other didn't seem like it would be worth the effort. I liked 1 too, but I didn't want to dedicate myself to one or the other without some other opinions. Thanks for speaking your interest, though. I probably won't use it for this story (if I ever get enough time away from homework to actually continue writing it), but maybe in the future.
