The Pick for Nov 14th: Locke & Key: Omega #1

Story by Joe Hill

Minor Spoilers

In a week where Marvel Now and Death in the Family will be the talk in the comic’s world, it’s also beginning of the end for Locke & Key which has been one of my favourite comics in last five years. So I’m bummed that it’s almost over but if this issue is any indication it’s going to one hell of a ride.

After the last arc in Locke & Key felted little rushed, Joe Hill slows things down and let’s all characters we been invested in have some great shining moments and heart-wrenching confessions from the use of Scott’s video project which also catches new readers up to speed and reminds old readers of these character histories, regrets and why their great characters. There are a lot great moments where Hill relies on Rodriguez’s visual storytelling to sell certain scenes which he always does and creates some great emotional scenes and payoff for the series. While this is going on we get got up to the antagonist of the story Dodge who has taken control of Bode and is collecting all of the keys and he ends the issue with saying “Well that’s that. I win. The end.” and it’s hard to argue with that but it makes me all more eager to know what will happen next.

The other storyteller in this is Gabriel Rodriguez whose art is still as amazing and effective as ever. Like I’ve said he can sell these emotional scenes and captures what these characters are feeling better than most artists in comics. His style is different than most working in comics with mix of realism and cartooning which helps give Locke & Key a certain flare. Another thing about his art is just how detailed it is and how it’s filled past references to other arcs of Locke and Key which help make the experience all the better when you reread the series or catch them while reading the series for the first time.

Locke and Key is nothing short of amazing and it’s so nice to have it back on my pull list again where it’s one of finniest comics to come out month in and month out. So in six issues, it’s all over but like said I can wait to see what happens next.

The Pick for Nov 21st: THE ROCKETEER: CARGO OF DOOM #4

Story by Mark Waid

Art by Chris Samnee

Minor Spoilers

This was hard one to deicide, I had six comics that I felt could have picked including Amazing Spider-man #698 (with has very interesting cliff-hanger) and first issues of Hulk and Comeback but out of all these comics none of them looked as beautiful as what Samnee and Bellaire are doing on The Rocketeer. For the Rocketeer all you need to know is that Cliff is a pilot and has a jetpack which led to him being superhero in 1920’s. While I wouldn’t tell you start at this issue but when hardcover comes out in February you should check it out.

What makes this series stand out is just how much fun it really is by having plans of dinosaurs in jetpacks to one getting its head blow off you can’t help not having fun reading it and enjoy just how silly plot is. While the Rocketeer is off fighting dinosaurs in very amusing fashion it still ties together with the sub-plot between Cliff and Betty giving them very sweet ending. The writing is nice and light with clever jokes that don’t manage to take way from the story itself. While the plot is silly which isn’t bad thing it’s actually very refreshing and fun to read and has its hero being a hero which is what more superhero comics should be. The only thing bugs me about the story is that it ends on cliff-hanger but if it means that were getting more of these two on The Rocketeer that would be great, it’s just not going to happen any time soon.

So why this comic stood out above the others this week is Samnee's art which brings very cartoony style that’s easy to follow what’s going on but has great level of depth to it. It's very clean style and gives off very retro vibe which fits perfectly for this series. He’s also one of the best artists at panel to panel storytelling where you’re never confused what’s going on in the pages which in a comic like this where there’s tons of action going on in the page to need very fliud style. The facial expressions are fantastic and with his style really do great job giving the comic an old time vibe. What really makes Samnee work stand out is Jordie Bellaire on colors (who’s is one of the best at what she does) that really make his art pop giving it something that Samnee work on Daredevil doesn’t have. The sound effects are nice touch and second last page capturing the scene perfectly making for one nicest looking pages of the week.

The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom is at end of the day may be the best Rocketeer story and one of the more enjoyable superhero stories to come along with year. Waid and Samnee are great team together and I hope down the line they get another Rocketeer series to work on.

The Pick for Nov 28th:  AMERICAN VAMPIRE #33

Written by Scott Snyder

Art by Rafael Albuquerque

Colors: Dave McCaig

Cover by Rafael Albuquerque

Spoilers

With this issue being the final part to the Blacklist and second last issue before it’s year long hiatus, the team on American Vampire ended on bang as well as change in status quo.  For those who don’t know what American Vampire is about an easy way of describing it is vampires mixed in with American history but it’s much more than that. American Vampire has been like Locke and Key one of my favourite ongoing comics.

Scott Snyder known for his work on Batman and Swamp Thing in New 52 has been crafting this story with Albuquerque before he became such a big name in comics industry. What’s great about American Vampire is that Snyder is working with his own creations where he can do whatever he wants and isn’t restricted like this issue shows featuring a death of major character. This issue you get fight between Pearl and Hattie where Hattie has been villain of this arc, her motivations make sense even if you don’t agree with them. It is nice to see all ties to the first arc of the series displayed though Pearl and Hattie talking to each other. The reveal in this issue while I figure it would happen I was still surprised hoping that maybe the character would make it out and it does give you a shed of hope just to take it away. It ties in the elements to WW2 arc of the series and ongoing question in Pearl and Henry relationship. While you knew this would eventually happen it doesn’t take away for the impact or the way it still feels like gut punch which is a great thing. The last couple of pages build up to the future of American Vampire and last page is excellent and wrapping up the main character relationship in wonderful but depressing way which is just great writing on Snyder’s part.

Rafeal Albuquerque delivers one of his best issues in the series as well does Dave McCaig. The one thing that bothers me on American Vampire is when Rafeal isn’t artist on the series but for this arc he did all of the issues and it shows how well him and Snyder work together displays why these two should always work on American Vampire together. The way Albuquerque draws the emotions of the characters really sells the impact of the scenes. When Henry and Pearl met each other the scene works so well and emotion on Pearl face in final panel is just heartbreaking heck that whole page is heartbreaking. The way aftermath of that scene is handled is great to look which give credit to Albuquerque who draws every panel constantly and looks truly great never missing the beat Snyder gives him. With a beautiful one page spread capturing the all character emotions perfectly and scene itself. As great as fighting scenes and way he handles the death. The last 5 pages are truly a standout for me. The background coloring looks great with very vibrant colors that make characters standout as well fit the mood of the story. Which is what only great thing is about hiatus is that he’s going to able to draw more of the series.

With American Vampire one issue away from going on hiatus the series has been changing up its status quo and has put the series into very interesting place. This has been one of my favourite arcs to the story and every character is now in a new surrounding each should make when it returns all the more special.

Story by Greg Rucka

Why the issue are the best of the week: This issue did what few comics can do well a car chase, pulling off trick that Batman #5 did where you had to turn your book according to the action on the page but it is pulled off better here. It continues to be fun ride and great p.i story written by Rucka  and best looking issue by Southworth on this series.

Daredevil: End of Days #4 (of 8)
Written by Brian Michael Bendis & David Mack
Art by Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz (w/ guest Alex Maleev)
Colors by Matt Hollingsworth
 Posted Image

(Note: Sorry this took a while to come out)

Why it was my pick of the week?
If you don't know Daredevil is my favourite superhero and it mostly has to do with Bendis's run with the character, that is one of favourite runs on any comic. This series continues what Bendis did with character a decade ago and it hasn't missed a beat story wise. The plot in-case you don't know is about Ben Urich is trying to find out what Daredevil's last words meant which was "Mapone" when he was brutally murdered by Bullseye.

The series is going though every important character to Daredevil and Matt Murdock seeing if they know the anwser to his final words and this issue did it best out of all of them. While i have been enjoying the series it took this issue for me to love it due to me getting use to the art and story finally started really clicking with me. It easily the best noir/crime comic out there at the moment. In the issue it shows Bullseye dead and how he died which adds a layer of creepiness and mystery to this series by having Bullseye hire a hooker to dress as Elektra and shot out his brains while referencing to one of the most famous moments in the characters history. It's great touch and adds to depth to the mystery the series has going.

With appearance of the Punisher at the end leading to the cliff-hanger feels just like the old daredevil and making me look forward to the next issue. The art has a 90's touch that i finally have gotten used to and I'm really starting to like with a nice mix of painted art added in. Bendis and Mack writing is top-notch every one feels in character and following Ben as he tries to figure out the mystery has great move on their part. They have created something great and with series hitting the half way point i think this could be one of the better Daredevil stories out there.

The Pick for Jan 9th: Sweet Tooth #40

Story by Jeff Lemire

Why it was the pick:
It'll be honest with you, This wasn't amazing week for comics to me. Nothing really blew me away but when i was looking at comics that came out this week i when with the last issue of Sweet tooth since i felt like i had most to say on it. Sweet Tooth if you don't know as been dubbed " Mad Max meets Bambi" where it takes place in a mostly rural post-apocalyptic setting where some creatures are human/animal hybrids. I know that's not great detail but i don't want to spoil anything.

With that out of the way, why Sweet Tooth #40 was my pick of the week other than concluding the series in a good way finishing off Gus's story it was really the best art I've seen from Jeff Lemire using all of his different styles which was joy to see. His art has very unique style that separates him from the other artists in comics with a more emotional and indie feel to it. The colors pop especially the two page spread that was one of the nicest I've seen in a while. Lemire's paneling is well done and smooth switching to a top to bottom reading and traditional comic style.

While it's not my favourite ending in a comic it got the job done and while the flash forward put somethings under the rug that i would like to see explored it still was interesting ending to great series. The biggest problem I've had in this series is that the pacing can be slow and in an issue not much happens if your not reading it in trade and this issue doesn't suffer the problem since it speeds up to when Gus is a father and finish off telling his life story and his connection to the other characters. Every character ends in place that makes sense and still stays true to the character. The world building and seeing Gus grow up are a joy to see and still stay true to previous issues. The ending may get people in tears and as a very touching ending. I'm big fan of Jeff Lemire and this was comic that made me fan of him, And can't wait for his next monthly indie series and Green Arrow.

The Pick for Jan 16th: The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1
Writer: Francesco Francavilla
Artist: Francesco Francavilla
Cover Artist: Francesco Francavilla

Posted Image

Why it's my pick of the week?
Now pulp comics have all but disappeared but if this is the way Francesco Francavilla plans to bring the genre back to life he has done a phenomenal job. This series is about "a pulp hero from a crime filled place called Colt City while in his investigation of two local mob bosses he is interrupted when a mysterious explosion murders them and a pub full of gangsters—taking out most of Colt City’s organized crime in one fell swoop. The Black Beetle tries to whose behind it.

Now this comic feels like it came right out of 1930/40's style pulp stories and from the design of the covers both inside and out to the lettering, writing and most importantly the jaw dropping art by Francavilla it captures it perfectly.  Francesco Francavilla has become one of my favourite artist working in comics today from his panel layout to the way his art is near perfect capturing emotions, expressions and the way he draws the planning of the Black Beetle's jobs. His art-style captures atmosphere better than any other artist working in comics today with the use of his colouring being heavy on red's, black's and blue's. Which lead to some stunning pages that stared at for minutes per page especially his one and two page spreads. To talk further about the design it always feel like it set in the world that's being build and adds a sense of immersion that makes you feel like your in this world, it also gives the pulp vibe though the posters set it this era.

Even with Francesco Francavilla incredible art-style his story doesn't let you down keeping a fun and entertaining story that keeps you on edge on your seat. He makes the Black Beetle a likeable character from the way he talks with joking around attitude but still feels right at home in the world Francvilla has set. His art and writing goes hand and hand to create a great world and setting but some may have problems that we don't know anything about the characters background and what made him a hero or much about the city itself but these questions in-time will be answered and it's not really about those things. To get back to the story itself it remains interesting slowly investing the reader and not getting them overwhelmed. The story gives you enough answers where the mystery is going but opens new ones by the end that you're even more invested in story itself. While i feel that writing didn't always blend well from page to page this small compliant to something that was done so well.

It may be early but this series seems that when Eisner time comes this series will be forerunner for awards. It's a fun and entertaining pulp ride that Francavilla has started and if you feel like trying something new this is the comic for you or you just want well done comic.

The Black Beetle really does look awesome, gonna check this comic out.

Black Beetle definitely looks interesting as all of these comics you have posted here so far! Really good job! Keep it up!

I would love to read all of these, but it is really hard to find comics in Finland. All you see in stores are Spiderman, Donald Duck and few mangas (for some bizarre reason no one here reads any comics)... I could read these from internet, but that just doesn't feel right...

Thanks, That's weird

And you can use comixology for digital comics and still support them.

But for stuff like Black beetle you would have to use Dark Horse's site since they don't partner up with comicxlogy i hear their site not as good with reading comics which is shame.

The Pick for Jan 23rd: Mind MGMT #7

Writer: Matt Kindt
Artist: Matt Kindt
Cover Artist: Matt Kindt

Posted Image

Why it's my pick of the week?

I've said this before but I'll say it again Mind MGMT was the surprising comic for 2012 for me and become one of favourite comics out there maybe my favourite. So, the main character Meru is crime writer who searches for the truth behind a mysterious airline flight and discovers a secret government agency of super spies, espionage, and psychic abilities which is Mind MGMT and if that sounds like it could be confusing and puzzling don't worry you're right and that's great thing.

Now with the intro out of the way what makes Mind MGMT a stand out is just how much content is in single issue and how it take advantage of the comic format. Take this issue for example while it still has a story that from a design point of view like any other comic it also has for the first half of the issue has black and white drawings at the bottom of the page (down in the gutters) which tells an additional story about how the letters that are delivered and their dangers, while another side has excerpts from a crime novel and that's not all it also includes like past Mind MGMT issues a 2 pg case file about a Mind MGMT agent as well on the back on comic questionnaire filled out by an agent that appears in the issue. Even in the story itself you'll have to re-read it couple times just to catch all of pieces of Kindt is putting in his art and writing.

It should be noted that this is a jumping on point for the series and Kindt does good job with opening page with 20 panels explaining everything you need to know about the series. The story in Mind MGMT may not be for everyone due to it being a mystery and keeping the reader in the dark giving them enough answers to want to read the next issue but if you're like me and enjoy the mystery surrounding this world you will love the story Kindt is telling. In this issue Meru after losing her memories explores why letters are coming to her house and who is sending them which follows chain that leads to the ad man that used to work for Mind MGMT and that's all going to say without spoiling it but it keeps up unpredictable nature of story Kindt as been telling where anything can happen which is exactly the feeling i want from story like this. The way writing fluidity moves from page to page keeping you invested in characters and story making you not want to put comic down.

Also when Matt Kindt explains things it feels gripping and important to the story and not feeling like exposition dump. The another thing that love about Mind MGMT is sense of history and depth that Kindt has put in this alternate world he has created. The pieces of Mind MGMT he has shown me makes me want to see more this world and all the another agents that worked for this agency. I love seeing recruiting and people discovering their powers and where their story leads. The story feels like puzzle which ends up being amazing thing.

So now Matt Kindt's art is a acquired taste you'll either love his gentle lines, ones that at times almost look like sketches drawn in ink with their graceful patterns and curves or you'll find that his art lacks detail and doesn't look like the art from big two or it doesn't makes you want to stare at pages. To be honest i love his art for reasons i said and water colours look nice and different from the other comic I'm reading .The way Kindt layout the out page are treat with panels bleeding into other and feel fluidity which pick the right time to go to flashback and you can tell it's flashback when their being used. The art fits the world Kindt has created and for me i rather have no one else be doing this comic than him.

Mind MGMT is in every single way one of the most unique and wonderful comics out there and feels like no other comic you can find and that sucks for another comics out there because Mind MGMT shows just how to make perfect series to read in issues.

The Pick for Jan 30th: Nowhere Men #3

Story by Eric Stephenson
Art by Nate Bellegarde & Jordie Bellaire
Cover by Nate Bellegarde & Fonografiks

Why it's my pick of the week?

I'm going to be honest this was tough week for pick of the week usually i have multiple comics that i could easily write about but no comic grabbed me like in past weeks the only comic i felt i had something to talk about on was Nowhere Men from Image comics which has been good series since it came out and this issue was best so far.

So you know last week's Mind MGMT where i said if you hate comics that keep you in the dark and when they give you 1 answer they already given you 5 more questions well you would hate this comic as well. This comic is pretty hard to explain it's about four people who are Beatles of science and their creation world corps where people who worked on there space station which something when wrong and people are mutating and dying. It's gives you enough answers and has interesting mystery to stay invested in the comic without feeling frustrating.

Something that makes Nowhere Men stand out is design aspect and how it is incorporated into the comic, with images that feel right out of a magazine though posters, articles, letters. Telling you details you can't get from a normal story. Stephnson's story has a lot characters and stories going on at same time while it is confusing you don't feel lose from what is happening and a lot of the characters feel larger than life so that it's easy to become invested in these character and with unique situation the characters are going though. The pacing is quite good as to where is switches characters and puts in it's magazine designs. While I'm not head over hells love with story like am with Mind MGMT i do want to know what's going to happen and each issue is getting better. It's also one most ambitious comics out there.

Now the art by Nate Bellegarde isn't going to blow you a way but he does have a good panel structure and panel to panel storytelling. His art fits story well and looks nice and clean. You can easily tell difference from character to character design elements of the story are done well. Jordie Bellaire's colours help make the images pop and give magazine elements a retro feel. She helps give the art bright and colourful and change in setting with different colours is nice.

Nowhere Men is becoming one of the best comics from Image and stories is quite different from most comics you'll fine. It's interesting and mysterious with great writing and art.

Why it's my pick of the week?

1) Best thing starting the Green Arrow in the New 52

2) It's basically the first time this series has been readable i hear

3) Jumping on point

4) Great use of colours

5) Great use of black and white

6) Andrea Sorrentino's is very good, with good panel to panel storytelling but sometimes the colours can be muddled things.

7) Great pacing and writing but story does feel tad familiar.

8) Overall a great first issue to reintroduction of Green Arrow into the new 52

The pick for Feb 20th: Daredevil #23
Story by Mark Waid

This is what superhero comic should be it's fun, funny, has action with right amount of darkness and emotion that breaks your heart. What makes it even better is that writing and art are top-notch. Another bonus is that is jumping on point that even cleverly goes over daredevil origin story.

So the story in this issue after finding out with every neat idea some criminal trying to recreate daredevil accident that gave him his powers. It's creepy in right way and interesting idea that hasn't seen done. Than after that leads to Daredevil showing his best friend what world looks like to him since he trying to get something off Foggy's mind. They joke around about who's after daredevil saying it's stilt man. So daredevil ends up having to fight these people that under went same accident daredevil did but only has until 9 to reach his appointment with Foggy. With great art from Samnee which this may have been his strongest issue to date with Foggy waiting for Matt to show up,Waid doesn't use any words lets it up to Samnee to tell the story and excels at it. He also let's Samnee tell final page story with one line getting all information you need and makes it all more depressing.

Samnee nails this issue, his cartooning finally starting working for this comic his lines and shady are excellent and way he captures mix of amount emotions are great. He's panel flow together. The colouring is nice and bright and helps make comic stand out from other superhero books, Samnee just creates beautiful comic. Waid crafts maybe his strongest issue of Daredevil in long time while past issues were great it seems last two issues of this series have brought series back to first 10 issues when it's amazing not just great. Waid story focusing on superhero element but never losing touch of characters and they superhero element plays into main story. This is one best issues i read this year and easily best issue of superhero comic i read this year.

Daredevil has been my favourite Marvel superhero for sometime now and with Waid's series is nice to have my favourite character get treated to great series. Daredevil is what every superhero comic should try to be.
