Which version of P3 do should I get? Orig,FES, or portable? (Which one's gameplay is more like P4?)

I'd personally say play the FES. It has more content than the original. The portable would probably be good if  you actually plan on playing portably but otherwise I'd recommend FES.

The FES has additional storyline and some extra content and scenes I can't remember and Portable has female main character story mode. Depends on your choice if you want to play with PS2 or PSP

Does the portable play differently?

I decided to do some research and did list of all stuff and differences so I don't need to answer multiple times:

 

Vanilla P3:- Male Protagonist route.- Anime cutscenes.- 3D character models both in and out of dungeons.

 

P3 FES:

- What Vanilla P3 has, plus:- Extra minor scenes in Male Protagonist route.- 1 New social link (Aigis) for Male Protagonist.- More Personae than Vanilla P3.- New minor gameplay features.- The Answer, an epilogue starring Aigis.- New music only available in The Answer.- New anime cutscenes only available in The Answer.P3 Portable:- Male Protagonist route.- 3D character models ONLY inside dungeons.- Visual novel cutscenes.- Aigis social link.- Female Protagonist route.- New music and social links for Female Protagonist.- More Personas than P3 FES.- Cameo from P4.- Major changes in battle mechanics.- Still has most gameplay features found in P3 FES.- New quests and bosses, not available in P3 FES.

I'd say Persona 3 Portable. It has more social links, full party control, and it's on the go. You could get FES and crossplay or something if you've got the Vita. In FES, there isn't full party control, no Female protagonist and doesn't have those social links. Instead it has The Answer.

If you have a ps3 then you can get FES for just $10 which is an amazing deal. I found Portable to be really enjoyable. If you're looking for one that is similar to P4 , then get FES

Portable. FES has a lot of things, but unless you're dying to play The Answer (which is very hard by the Persona sub series's standards), Portable has everything else going for it. FES copies are hard to find offline anyways.

They have FES an Portable at my GS so its really hard to decide, but I think I may choose portable

basicly what dusk said. I have both FES and P3P because I still need to finish the Answer and I wanted to play P3P mostly for the girls route. but since you said you are looking for the one whoes gameplay is similar to P4 than that would be P3P. I mean if they had the Answer in P3P I would say get that one but however it dosen't and also in P3P there is another doorway at the enterance in Tarturus where you can replay the boss battles of the game however they will be stronger and you will have the allies you had while fighting that boss and they will be at the level they where at during that point i believe but you will be at your current level i think and it also has other challenges you can play in. one thing that dusk didn't mention that P3P has is that if you play as the female you get to pick whoes Igors assistant will be either Elizabeth or Teodore. but you can actually get them both pretty cheep i know that P3 FES is only $10 on the PSN and I think P3P is around that as well at either $25 or $20 or maybe even $15 on the PSN but yes Persona 3 is a great game its actually one of my favorites and my favorite out of the two that I played which is only 3 and 4 but I think those are the better ones out of the series so far anyway lol can't wait for P5 and the Persona 3 movie!!
