How to act around family members you're not happy with

Posted

So tomorrow I have to get together with my Dad's side of the family for Christmas, and that would be a problem except for the fact that that some them I'm not happy with.  My cousin has been treating me like crud on and off for the last couple of years.  Once I told her that she had been mean to me ever since I got to her house and she replied "Who said I wanted you here?".  A couple months ago I went to wish her a happy birthday on Facebook and found out that we're no longer Facebook friends.  I'm done with her games.  Her mom told us that we were all going on a cruise, then decided to move the cruise to the next week making it impossible for me to go.  So I'm going to spend that first week of school adding hex numbers and walking across campus in the cold while they're having fun in shorts.  I know it would be best for me to be the better person and act like nothing's going on, but that just isn't working for me.  I know it's not a good idea, but I kinda want to act like I'm going on the cruise just to tick them off and make them feel bad.  And my other cousin who has two little girls is coming and my mean cousin, whom I don't want to be with, is going to hang out with them because they live in different states.  Any ideas on what I should do?

If it's true they intentionally scheduled the cruise during a time that'd make it impossible for you to go, and your cousin's being a prick, are their guilt/annoyance truly worth anything?  Being completely apathetic to their affairs feels like a way to both make you the better man, and give them what they want by keeping you out of their lives.  And I don't mean a sullen kind of apathetic, that makes it obvious you're pretending to not care.  I mean like a meh, whatever, go have fun and I'll do my own thing :) kind of apathy, where you don't care one way or another because they are not worth your mental energy.  If you at least pretend their actions don't affect you, it takes away the fun of dragging you through the mud.  If they don't care for you then shoehorning your way into your lives will just make things strained for them and you.

I had the same problem. I had to sit in the car with my little cousin and I hate him. So much. He treats his video games like shit and abuses his dogs. He keeps asking to play my psp, but... 'as if'. σωσ

I ignored him the entire ride. It was difficult, but my earphones and loud music helped. Just ignore them, avoid contact with them, and you should be fine. If they cause you a problem, let someone know.

Im no expert (I guess) but Just ignore them, it's the best thing to do. Pretend like they've never been there in your life, if theyre assholes they don't belong in your life anyways :O
