In an alternate timeline, NerveGear technology has been integrated and distributed worldwide ten years earlier.
The conspiracies are on the rise, but most gamers don't care at all.
Prologue
The text came.
"I'm goin' in."
I typed in my response, "K, just let me do the dishes, I'll meet you there." Send.
The chore took me about ten minutes. Once I finished, I heard the news from the TV. "In New York, young boy's mother attempted to forcibly remove the popular NerveGear helmet from his head to find that he died at that very moment. This just one of the dozens of cases in the past hours after the long awaited Sword Art Online's launch."
I froze. It had happened. I ran up to my bedroom and grabbed the helmet, plugged it in. Before I put it on however, I decided to write something down.
Dear family, odds are I'm trapped in this game, take off the helmet and I'm dead. You're probably freaking out and just full of mixed emotions of dread and hate and what not. Why did I do this? You might be wondering. I've got a calling. I've been expecting this even. I am going to keep as many people from dying in this thing as possible. Get me on life support some time in the next 24 hours. I'll be gone for while but I do intend on coming back. My best assumption is that this is going to last somewhere between 2-5 years. In that time, I am going to do what I've been needing to do for a long time. Protect.
With love from your son/brother
Goodbye.
I put the helmet on and lay down on my bed. "Link start!" The colors came in a flurry, the system calibrated my senses.
Sight. OK
Hearing. OK
Touch. OK
Smell. OK
Taste. OK
The banner appeared before me.
Welcome to Sword Art Online
After that, something else showed up.

In a flash of white. I stood in the panicked courtyard in the Town of Beginnings. I was level 1 with the most basic of gear. I had some Cor to start out with. I was going to need a quick shopping spree before I could find him. I bought a padded cloak and new sword. It was a sleek weapon with a long thin blade and a cross-like shape.
