In Kingdom Hearts when Sora has his dive into the heart/ awakening he is asleep. So it didn't actually happen in the real world it happened in the sleeping world. And in Kingdom Hearts it seems when you sleep you awaken your inner most self. It just got me thinking maybe this moment, when Sora was sleeping is when the keyblade actually chose him.

I'm pretty sure it was already confirmed by Nomura that the Kingdom Key originally chose Riku because of Terra's ceremony, but since he chose darkness right before Destiny Islands was destroyed, it chose the one with the strongest heart who was the closest, which was Sora?
