Final Mix no scan?

So ive been playing since yesterday, im in Deep Jungle, Im level 18, Proud mode, Chose shield, and gave up sword. I chose to start at midday..STILL NO SCAN?! am I missing something? because ive played through the game 3 times and I got it at about level 9-11 everytime.
