Red Roads ( 1 X 1 With Josh Wilson )

Posted

RATED: 17 For Vampire Violence, action, and language.

A gas station, off the main road.

Dirty place, with a rusted out tin roof and toothless shop keep.

In a dingy bathroom in the back, a fan rattling and humming in the open window, two teen aged guys argued in the dim heat of the afternoon.

" It wasn't my fault, Jack ,you KNOW that! "

Jamie looked down at the floor, seated on the toilet in the stall, waiting for Jack to finish applying the dye to his hair.

His own black hair was now a rich white, with honey blonde high lights, leather gloves without fingers on his hands.

" What are we going to do? Keep running? They'll catch us in the end..."

He looked up, a single tear running down his cheek.

" Won't they?"

"Carol? Why?" Jack said. "You told someone!? Or was she..."

" She was...a..." He looked up. " How do you know about Carol?"

"You mumbled it in your sleep…" Jack said. "Andrew also told me. But, please continue."

" She....said vampires are vermin. Bloodsucking is... decadent. We need to seek higher..."

He laughed bitterly. " It sounds so ratass stupid just repeating it. "

"It does…" Jack chucked. "A vamp that hates blood…" he sighed. "Continue. Consider this you first psycho therapy session. If I- if we learn more, we can possibly stop these outbursts…" he handed him a blood pack. "Just in case."

" Thanks. "

He sighed. " She...she said that vamps needed to tame it, the Hunger." He laughed bitterly. " That, and she'd told me she'd never sleep with me again if I didn't go a month. "

"You did all that…" Jack said "To bang a chick? Or did you just really believe in that crap?" Jack gripped the wheel. "Because your an idiot, or really devout."

" I though....maybe... it was possible. " He frowned. " Andrew used to agree: he said..." At this, he fell silent, watching the dark road unfold beyond the windsheild.

Jack looked at his brothers vacant expression. "Fine. I just hope we can reverse or control this blood rage…"

Jamie said nothing, but he did open the blood pack, sucking the liquid out quietly, eyes closed in pleasure.

" Mmm...."

Jack smiled. "That, brother, is the first step to recovery..." He chuckled. He always liked the look of pleasure on Jamie's face. Unless he was doing creepy blood rage shit. That was an obvious exception...

" Yeah.... JACK WATCH OUT!!!"

It was as if time had slowed: the tree, growing so close the road, the car a hairsbreath off course when Jack had looked at him...

The crash seemed to take forever, metal flying, steam hissing.

Jamie's cheek cut open, blood spraying over Jack's face.

A hubcab rolled over the road like a dropped coin, spiraling to a stop.

Silence, as steam hissed upwards into the cloudless sky in the dark night, the moon watching without interest.

"Ahhh…" Jack groaned. He felt some punctures on his body. His legs... He slowly regained feeling. He tumbled out of the car. "Ja-" it hurt to talk. "Ja..." He struggled to open the door for his brother. Then darkness hit him. He passed out

A woman walked out from behind the tree, smirking. " Poor Jack... never could drive. "

She kicked him, hard. " Bastard. "

The simple mind trick to make him look left had worked: the brothers cheek was sliced to the bone, but that was an easy fix.

Picking Jamie up, she ran, ran fast, into the night. She wasn't human, blurring through the trees as she was.

An owl hooted in the stillness.

Jack came to hours later. It was early morning, and the road was desolate to begin with.

"Jamie?"

No answer. He was not in the car anymore. A trail of blood was left behind. Nothing left but to follow...

Jamie came to, blinking against harsh light.

" oi, Sleeping Beauty's up!" A rough voice cried.

Jack kept going , following the trail. He saw a girlish figure in the distance "Hey!" He said .

Jamie looked groggily around. " Wha..."

He lying in a warehouse, the door open to the night air.

In the distance, he could see a figure running towards him.

Jack saw Jamie in the chase. "Jamie!" He ran into the warehouse. Where did that girl go ? He thought....

" J...ja..." Jamie tried to sit up, but something held him down: looking to his left, he saw thick needles jammed roughly into his veins, his blood running through clear plastic tubes to collect in a large medical bag.

" H...help...me..."

Jack looked around... It might be an ambush, he thought, because this is too simple.... He rushed to unstrap his brother.

Jamie winced as Jack yanked the needles free, blood running thick and hot to dot the cement floor in great splashes.

" H..hurry..." He panted out. " They're...."

His strength gave out, and he fell to the floor in a heap.

Jack picked up his brothers body, and the briefcase and headed for the door.

Jamie came to hours later, as they drove quickly down a darkened highway, still woosy from the blood draining, his arm bandaged.

" Jack...?"

"Yes?" Jack said. He had hot-wired a nearby car. Apparently they were near a forest park. The bags of blood and clothes they had before were destroyed in the crash.
