The night fog drifted across the grounds of the campus as she hurried home, cheeks flushed from the sudden move from the heat of the library to the cold chill of the night, her breath hanging in a small cloud before her as she walked on.

She sighed, shivering slightly in her thin coat, and closed her eyes against the night.

She sighed again, and stood at the light, waiting for it to change from red to green, a lone car idling at the corner, the driver obscured by dark tinting.

As it changed, she felt a cold draft, and thought, almost positive, a soft thud echoed from the alley, but she saw nothing.

Suddenly spooked, she began to run, dashing across the wet cement, her boots clicking.

She didn't see him until she slammed into him, falling gracefully on her ass in a puddle.

He laughed, a deep chuckle, and she looked up, prepared to deliver a scathing comment, but took a breath:

The man standing above her was tall, dark stubble darkening his cheek bones and chin, his eyes kind, one blue, one deep emerald.

" You ok?" He asked, a soft smile on his lips.

" I... yeah.."

He held out a hand. " Need some help."

She took it, not allowing herself to admit she was internally screaming. " Thanks."

" You take care. "

He walked on, his coat covering any good views of his ass as she watched him walk away, a dreamy look in her eyes.

A sudden thunder burst snapped her back to reality, and she hurried on, clutching her books to her chest.

But fate is a fickle mistress: there was no such thing as a chance encounter.

He walked on, sighing: she had been...

Get grip: it was a female. Good, ok...there are thousands.

He main priority at the moment was to get to the woods: his stomach panged with a deep, aching hunger.

He jogged down an old hikers trail, leaving the main road behind as he raced through the dark trees, a light snow falling around him.

He spotted a deer, a young buck, horns barely budding.

He tensed, crouching on his haunches, then pounced, taking the buck down in one swift motion.

It struggled, but he snapped it's neck, hungrily digging his teeth into its neck.

But..it wasn't teeth that filled his mouth, not at all....

It was fangs, the fangs of a wild dog or stalking cat...

He wiped his mouth, his coat smeared with blood and gristle: not much remained of the buck at this point.

His hunger sated for another night, he walked on, whistling a small tune to himself as he went.

Interlude: Melodies of The Night/ Dark Fall

They walked the trees, a pack, as one: one single minded creature, six of them, low and sleek.

Their shadows danced through the trees like nightmares, sometimes humanish... often something else.

They headed as one, a tight knit group, into town: six unbearably beautiful teens, four boys and two girls, all in black.

the tallest, the apparent leader, red haired and freckled, cheeks dusted with stubble and jawline already as a mans, walked with a steady stride, the others following in his wake, meekly, respectively.

They walked in silence: not even their boots made a sound on the cement, as the entered a small all night mart, the harsh lights blinding them at first.

The fat woman behind the counter, hair curled to within an inch of its life, nose buried in New Moon by Stephanie Meyer, didn't even glance up, as they headed to the back, where the meats and beers were kept.

The teens stared at the display in the freezer: sausage casings, raw hamburger oozing blood in plastic wrap, pork chops, lamb chops, small turkey roasts...

The red haired boy snatched a package of meat: his eyes were now a strange garnet colour, as his teeth tore through the package, hungry groans coming from deep in his gut.

the other dug in, the blonde girl slipping an whole sausage in her mouth and swallowing in one bite.

" Hey, what the Hell? You bastards have to pay for that shit!"

The fat woman had come out from behind the counter, and stood, glaring, a ball bat tucked under one meaty arm.

Wiping his mouth, the red haired boy bowed to her, smiling.

" Forgive us, my dear lady... this was only the beginning to our feast."

The woman sneered. " Yeah, sure, great. Now pay for all that shit, or I'll call the damn cops, you punk."

The boy bowed low. " Forgive us..."

He raised his head, eyes a deep garnet, teeth sharp as razors.

" But we ARE hungry. "

The woman didn't even have ample time to scream, as all six fell on her with hungry, snapping jaws....

The next day was stormy, a Saturday.

Alone, Janet off with her latest hump and dump boyfriend, Susan sat in her chair by the window, lightning flashing, reading old fairy tales by the light of a small candle, power to the dorm knocked out hours before.

Sitting in the near darkness, gazing at the lavish illustration of Snow White in her glass coffin, Susan almost felt like she was in a fairy tale herself: A dark, stormy night, alone by candlelight....

when was the prince going to waltz through the door to take her his castle of dreams forever?

BANG BANG BANG

" open up, sweetie.... know you in there...."

What was...

The lock gave, and a drunken frat boy, smelling of beer, sweat, and grease stumbled in. He fumbled with his zipper, walking stumblingly towards her.

" Let's do it..wanna?" He slurred, eyes fluttering.

Susan stood, carefully edging to the bathroom. " No thank you. Please leave my ro..."

He tackled her, pining her to the bed.

" No...please... stop this..." She cried, as he tore her blouse, rubbing against her.

What happened next was when Susan realized her life was changed forever.

A mass tackled the frat boy, tearing him off her and slamming his head into the wall.

The figure looked over, and Susan saw flashing garnet eyes.

" You ok?" A deep voice rasped.

Susan nodded, closing her blouse.

Looking down to do the buttons, she spoke. " T..thank you.. I.."

She looked up: no one was there.
