Hey there everyone, how's it going? Wow, I know that I'm very late on this, since Tales Of Xilia came out on August of last year, so yeah, I'm guessing almost everyone in this site who is a Tales fan has played this game. But still, whenever I finish playing a game, I want to make a review of it, and plus, there are many gamers our there looking for their next big game. With that in mind, I'm here to offer up my review of the Playstation 3 Exclusive Role-Playing Game, Tales Of Xilia.
Okay then, so to sum this up, Tales Of Xilia is the thirteenth entry in the Tales Of series, which has existed since December of 1995. The series has also had multiple spin offs, and like Final Fantasy, you don't have to own the previous games in the series, because each one is a separate entry, except for some of the games that have direct sequels. (Example: Tales Of Symphonia/Tales Of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World.) So then, I stumbled into this game by requests from the members here on this site. I had heard many good things about the Tales Of series, and how they had amazing stories and entertaining gameplay, and since Tales Of Xilia had released, I decided to give it a shot. So for Christmas I got the game, and when I played it, my mind was blown. This is the first Tales game I've ever played, and it is amazing!
Now, to summarize the plot while trying to avoid major spoilers, the story revolves around Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, two individuals living in a land known as Rieze Maxia, and the two eventually cross paths when a mysterious event occurs that starts to drain the world of mana and spirits. I won't tell you anything beyond that, because anything I tell you after that is a spoiler, so get off the couch and get the game! So basically, in this game you choose to play either as Jude or Milla, and both of their stories are almost the same, except for some moments where you have to play through with one specific character and the other to get the full scope of the story. (I didn't play both sides but I'm planning to play as Milla for my second playthrough.) Okay, so that's it for the story front, now let's discuss overall gameplay.
In terms of combat, it's a real time battling system, where you can move freely around the battlefield and decided what attacks your going to use against your foes. (Think of it as Kingdom Hearts but without Keyblades.) You attack with normal attacks and abilities called Spirit Artes. Also, when you have more members in your party,(up to 6 for the whole game and 4 that can be in the battlefield.) you can activate special Linked Artes, which result in epic Team Attacks which really pack quite a punch and are a splendor to behold! Also, later in the game you unlock Mystic Artes, which are basically Signature moves each character has. In terms of world traveling, you get to visit many dungeons and towns and highroads, and they're all very entertaining to go through. Talking to the villagers is interesting, as they have many stories to tell, and you also get to complete Sub Evens, which are side quests that you can choose to complete. Trust me, they are all very fun, and none of them ever felt boring. (I did almost all of the sub events.)
The awesome thing about these Sub Events is that they help to flesh out the story of the characters, and you get items with which you can customize your character's appearance. The items you get range from bunny ears to goofy glasses, which are all pretty cool. (Although I chose more cooler looking items like the Headband, Hat, Devil Wings, Angel Wings, etc.) Also, during the course of your travels, you have the option to view skits with the select button. Skits are dialogue boxes between the characters, and the best thing about them is that they're full voice acted, and it's very entertaining to see their conversations! When you play this game, you'll feel like your watching an anime!
And the best thing about leveling up in this game is that you get GP with which you can use to upgrade your character's Lilium Orbs. (Think Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid System.) The more you expand on the Lilium orb, the more abilites and artes you unlock, not to mention you get stat boosts! And speaking of expanding, you also have the option to expand weapon, armor, item, food and accessory shops so they can give you better items and item discounts! This is a necessity since you'll want to have the best weapons in hand, and donating materials you find in treasure chests or loot bags in the world helps with expanding the shops. And battles are always fun and engaging and never get tiresome, and there are endless combos to create with all your party members. And you won't even feel like your grinding, since by the end of the game I had my characters near level 70, so leveling to 100 should be a snap for completionists.
In conclusion, everything about this game, from the story, to the combat, to the overall experience, it's something truly worth experiencing. Anyone who calls themselves an RPG fan owe it to themselves to play this amazing game, and for newcomers to the Tales series, hop on board, because this is a worthy ride! With that being said, if you love emotional and gripping stories filled with betrayal and intrigue, you will love this game. And there are epic plot twists you wouldn't see coming! Well then, that's all I have to say about this game, lol, I hope I didn't bore you halfway through this review. Haha, well then, I sincerely recommend this amazing RPG, for everyone owes it to themselves to play this game, because it deserves much recognition! Until next time, this has been another one of Golden Fighter's reviews! Golden out! (And tell me what you thought about this review!)
