Alright, so. First real "Review" style thing I've done here, and as such, I will be posting my general ruleset for this review, which is as follows:
I am going to be VERY critical of it, and as such, my opinion WILL show through in this. Though I will be objective and impartial to the subject best I can; I will, however, show my true emotions and thoughts as such.
I will be presenting the Score at the beginning. The reason for this is due to wanting to deter people from outright seeing something they like being bashed, if I do, or if the opposite were to occur.
Our scale, in this case, is odd. First, I will be rating it on a good or bad, or "Pass/fail" situation, with a scale of how well it fit into that category from one to ten. Then, following this, I will put a general scale from one to five stars.
This. Is. A. Review. Not the truth. This is how I see it. Don't like it? Then don't. Your opinion is yours, and I won't make you change it. Just don't try to change mine.
Read all that? Agree with it? Well, too bad. Here we go.
"Lucy"
Stars
★★☆☆☆
My scale:
Bad; 2/10
Visuals
First and foremost, the visuals were great. The camera, overall, stayed on the important parts, stayed well within a sensible area for the events. There were some shots that were very awkward, but those were very few and far between. However, the content of the footage, however, was unnecessary at times. This was the most apparent in the beginning, with visuals of predator and prey when the main character, Lucy, went to deliver the package. Or, when Morgan Freeman's character (Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman, not a character with 15 minutes of screentime) begins to talk about how we reproduce to survive, and birthing scenes of multiple species flash on screen to try and hit home a very obvious point which was already beating you over the head with it's "importance" to the plot. Some shots just seem bland and overall they're good, but generic. I know there is only so much you can do with a camera and special effects, but something a little more fresh woulda been nice.
Acting
Acting, acting, acting. Oh, how I loath the acting in this movie for the most part. Our main character goes from generic afraid average Joe to M. Night Shamalan character carbon copy, and she's the main character for cryin' out loud! I understand she's supposed to be bland, but she didn't have to be. Everyone with anything interesting to add had about 15-20 minutes of screentime, and there are only 4 important characters. Seventy percent of the movie is her being stuck with background characters and the one random side character who showed up at the last quarter of the movie. Five percent is anything Morgan Freeman, five to the villain (Who should have given his five percent to Morgan Freeman, who could have been more interesting than the villain), last twenty was morality spewing with main character's and a mild love interest being shoehorned in.
Action
As an action flick, of course I have to review the action, which is VERY good. It's interesting and well-done. The fact she wasn't challenged much was a bit disappointing, but to be expected. The visual effects for the action, as mentioned before, were good as well for this. Lucy's powers were as to be expected, cool, flashy, and exciting.
Plot
The plot sits in the middle here. There have been great action movies with great story's intertwined (Avengers, being the first example I can think of off the top of my head) and some with not too great ones (Transformers: Rise of the Fallen, I look at you) but Lucy fall's in the middle here. It isn't too investing of a story, and it's not poorly executed. Other than the fact that it doesn't have a whole lot of use of it's main actors other than the one they used for Lucy, it's good.
Overall
The movie itself, at face value, is decent. With not a whole ton of great to save it from it's bad, and the fact the plot was lukewarm and the fact that the acting was either bland or didn't have enough of the non bland acting in it to save it, in my view.
Thank you for reading this review. If you have something to comment on, go ahead, and say, otherwise, have a good day!
