Generally, i'm not a fan of writers/directors who are always trying to convince people that they are good by being serious all the time.

 

(*cough* Zack Snyder *cough* Man of Steel *cough*)

 

I really enjoy writers who don't take themselves too seriously and have really big imagination, like for example, some writers i'm becoming interested in:

 

Geoff Johns

 

Grant Morrison

 

Joss Whedon

 

Guillermo Del Toro

Tony Bedard is pretty good.

Hm...

 

I'd suggest H.P. Lovecraft. His short stories are pretty good. (This coming from someone who hasn't even read The Call of Cthulhu.)

Another author I'd recommend is Garth Nix. I've always liked his stories.

I'll second Lovecraft, but I think Mark Twain better fits your criteria. It all depends on what kind of stuff you like to read though.

Read The Bane of Yoto it is published by my favorite American publisher. I have not got around to reading it, but I hear it is awesome.
