Materials can be sold for money, turned in for quests, used to trade, and item orb collectives can be used to fill in the Colectapedia, which has some awesome rewards. Also, there is a period where items are used to rebuild some areas the Homs own, so keeping them can be vital, especially since that quest line in particular can be a very long path till its cleared, and finding those items en-mass Amy be trouble later on.

So I'm guessing its not a good idea to sell them then. Alright, thank you!
April 10, 201510 yr As stated above, materials have a lot of purposes. I'm not sure if it starts when the game starts or after a plot point, but close to the beginning of the game it will start telling you if an item is needed for a future quest or not. It'll mark those items with an exclamation mark (!) so you won't forget and accidentally sell them. Edited April 10, 201510 yr by iEatKittens
April 10, 201510 yr So I'm guessing its not a good idea to sell them then. Alright, thank you!You will more than likely eventually have to sell items, however until you've confirmed you don't need them, hold on to them. Also, I do suggest having a guide with a the quests open at all times, they can really help with knowing what items you may need, but take care to not spoil yourself. Also, you can gift items between character's to raise affinity. Be careful as of course the items can be hard to get that you trade away, and some items can have negative effects on affinity as well, if you choose the wrong ones.

About quests, I'm really have difficulty understand where I am supposed to retrieve or do something relating to the quest. Like one of the quests say to retrieve a spanner in the commercial districts...I don't know where in the commercial district it is to point me to it. Like is it glowing or something? Same goes for the key I need to find which isn't in any specific location or getting certain items from monsters that I have no idea to kill.

Quest items that are laying around look similar to collectibles (the floating orbs), but are red instead of blue. They'll also show up as a red exclamation mark on the minimap when you're near them. As for the monsters, you'll typically be given a name and a general area they can be found in. From that point, you really just have to explore said area until you find it. As someone mentioned earlier, it helps to have a quest guide or a Google search ready if you're having trouble tracking something down. The quests can be tough to figure out sometimes, since there's not a monster encyclopedia (Unless one was added to the 3DS version). Thankfully, the quests are optional, and you can get away without doing all of them. I personally only did a few in each area, and I didn't have to grind often.

On the screen, which you then can find your way over to. Next, the map will have the areas/districts labeled, and when entering them they will also appear on a bar on-screen. From there you can search rather easily. The key is much like this type of item, just look around for a bit and it can be found.

I might have to buy a guide but do you know where I can find a good guide that isn't spoilerish? That's the only thing making me afraid of searching one up.

I honestly don't know of any specific guide that goes into detail on everything, I personally just used the Xenoblade Wiki to find out where I could find certain items/monsters. Someone else on here might know of a good guide you can use.

The Wiki has just about everything you will need, and with little misinformation to it, and by searching specific quests it will not spoil you unless you look too much into something.
