Can I play PersonaQ: Shadow of the Labyrinth?

Posted

Just wanted to know if it's okay to play it without having played any other Persona games in the series and I want to try one after the exams.

I have seen the animation of Persona 4 and Persona 4: Golden and I wanted to know if it covers me in terms of story, in order to play the game which is the most available to me at the moment.

So...Is it?

Well... yes and no. While I think PQ is enjoyable on it's own, it does deal with some issues from both P3&P4 (might have some minor spoilers, though I can't remember for sure).

Haven't seen the anime, but I think it covers the whole story of P4.

I'd still recommend starting with P4 or P3, though, if that's possible. But the decision is yours.

Great, time to dust off my Playstation 2 from the closet, assuming I manage to find the game in the blackest of markets.

I had no trouble finding Persona 4, but Persona 3 was a bit trickier. But that might depend on where you live. Do you have PS3? At least here on Europe they have Persona 3 FES (basically P3 +some additions&epiloque chapter) on PS store. :)

It's available on PS Store!? :O  You're a lifesaver. If only Persona 4 were available there too but whatever, I can't have everything in life.

So yeah, here in Greece there is something weird and wrong with the way video games work.

I think they burn them or something when the game doesn't sell well in the country.

I'm not even sure if any PS2 games exist anymore. The only ones I have managed to find are usually either the last in stock or used. Never found P3/4 with them though.

While I would, of course, recommend playing Persona 4 since it's just a fantastic game, the two anime give you all of the important info you'll need. As for Persona 3, I would recommend playing it since there is no anime available (there are movies, but as far as I know they haven't all been released yet, so you'd only get like half the story from the ones that are out now).

I don't know about Greece's PS Store, but I do know that here in the US both P4 and P3 are available to buy as PS2 classics.

That said, your knowledge about P4 would probably be enough to let you enjoy PersonaQ if you chose the P4 protagonist. PQ is mostly based in its own story, so there's not too much about either P3 or P4 (I think only near the beginning do they really talk about it that much). There might be some minor spoilers about P3, but I don't remember there being any major ones. Well, there's definitely some hinting to one of the big twists at the end of P3, which you might be able to figure out just by thinking about it, but I don't know for sure since I had already played the game and thus the hints probably stuck out more to me.

I mean, if you have a 3DS and some cash, of course you can

should you play it is another question. you're probably familiar with the P4 characters already since you watched the anime, but I'd check out some P3 material too so you're familiar with that cast and their story, and then go forward with PQ
