I tend to get one console and one handheld.

For me it really depends on what games are currently out and whether I need a new console in order to play them.  If there are enough titles I'm wanting on a specific console I'll usually get it, but not if I'm only going to be playing one game on it.

 

For the current generation I only have a Wii U, since my PS3 and even my 3DS are now outdated.  I plan to get a PS4 eventually but not quite yet; probably not until FFXV and KHIII are ready to come out.
