The problem with Hunter x Hunter airing on Toonami. The problem of long running series on Toonami

Posted

So yesterday it was announced that Hunter x Hunter will be airing on Toonami and will be replacing Parasyte . But what I want to talk about is the problem with it airing as well as other long running series.

Let’s do the math:

if a series with 13 episodes (for example Deadman Wonderland) It takes 3 months to finish.

If a series has 26 episodes (for example Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, Akame ga Kill, Parasyte) It takes 6 months to finish.

If a series has 50 episodes (for example Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Soul Eater) It takes 1 year to finish.

If a series has over 100 episodes (for example Dragon Ball Z Kai, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach,) It takes 2 years to finish.

Do you see where i’m getting at? You see Hunter x Hunter has over 140 episodes, meaning that it will take 3 years to finish.

Now the main point about how this is a problem. The problem is that we now have too much series that over 100 episodes. We already have Dragon Ball Z Kai, Naruto Shippuden, and One Piece. Plus the latter 2 are still ongoing. Now, with Hunter x Hunter, there are only 2 slots for series with less than 100 episodes.

Do you finally get what I’m saying? Now with Hunter x Hunter, there won’t be enough space for other series. The only slots that will be available for other series is 9:30 and 10:30 ET, 12:30 and 1:30 PT. The 12:00 ET only airs shows that were on the 9:30 slots. That is the problem with Hunter x Hunter airing, and long running series, they will take too long to finish and there won’t be enough space for other series.

Now before you say anything, I have nothing against Hunter x Hunter. I’m happy it’s airing, but like I just said, it will be a problem.

If they can do stuff like Attack on Titan marathons, than they can do the same for other long running shows, couldnt they?

They just want to coincide with the manga returning. If that goes on hiatus any time when they're airing the show, it makes it easy to pull it and replace it with another series. Alternatively, they're probably hoping that several years from now there will be enough chapters to warrant another anime run that they can license.

You see, that's something I hate, because I keep up with Toonami each week, and even if I miss a week, I have On Demand, so I can watch it anyways.  What sucks about Marathons then is that instead of continuing the other animes I'm interested in, I then either have to miss a week of Toonami, or watch several episodes of an anime I either don't care about, or episodes I've already seen.

This is not a problem.

Long-running anime means they get to save money because they don't have to constantly pay rights to use shows on those specific slots and change them out, and in turn, allows them to acquire even more rights to more shows. The recent acquisitions of HunterxHunter, Dimension W, and the looming premieres of the revivals of Samurai Jack and Fooly Cooly are signs of nothing but progress and success.

The only way this poses a problem is if people just don't support the block. There's still plenty of room for other shows and even with the long-runners, anything can happen. Toonami made the decision to drop the original Naruto anime to air Shippuden after all, so if it means that Toonami is able to grow, some major changes may still be made to fit accordingly.
