I, along with a few other people, are in a group that instead of being lead to the handegg field would go look around campus digging through debris and pulling out any dead bodies, then we would tag them and put them in body bags.

Unfortunately I guess it only covers natural disasters like tornadoes or earthquakes, so if a bomb went off, we wouldn't do anything, and if a gunman was on campus, we couldn't all gather and tackle them down. D:

In the 1950's children hid under their desk to protect them from nuclear detonations. (because a desk will definitely stop a raging fireball).

Exactly. Getting under a desk won't do anything to protect you from a nuke.
