Is the Religion vs Science Debate Pointless?

Posted

Arguably the biggest debate in the past 20 or so years (probably even more) is religion vs science. Which is right and which is wrong? Does science have all the answers or does religion hold the key? Did God intentionally the universe or was it a pure coincidence like the Big Bang theory suggests?

This debate spawns flame wars and people writing humongous paragraphs trying to defend their arguments. But it never ends, so what's the point? This debate is utterly pointless because those arguing will never reach a conclusion, it will just go on and on and on.

Instead of arguing over who created the world why don't you spend some time trying to save it and help it? You can always find common ground somewhere along the line with the person you are arguing with.

The people involved in the argument will never convince the other one to abandon their beliefs will they?

Person 1 thinks she is correct and person 2 thinks she is correct. So a conclusion can never be reached.

Didn't say that.

I said that one side is about facts, the other is about stories. You can belief what you want, but there is _still_ such a thing as reality and fiction regardless.

Precisely. There is a world outside of us and a world inside of us, and both those worlds are valid. Simple psychology.

It's not really much of a debate in the first place when one side is rooted in facts and the other is rooted in stories.

thank you!

Okay, now you're losing me a little.

Okay, now you're losing me a little.

It's simple.

There's a world outside of us. Earth as is defined by pure hard science. A big mass of rocks and stuff orbiting around a big ball of gas. There is no God or magical force guiding the universe. The universe is just what it is. No good, no bad, no nothing but the things as they are.

However, every human being sees the world differently. Human minds are limited by biological components, true, but human minds are still quite vast and variable. What makes one person happy and healthy might not appeal to another person. Might even disgust them, like how Christians might find Aztec ceremonies wicked and evil while the Aztecs themselves saw them as glorious.

So many people are obsessed with cold hard facts, but they forget or even dismiss the importance of each individual human psyche, which can function in a variety of ways. Religion is one of those ways, and religion has produced plenty of good in this world.

I never said religion should be outlawed, or is 100% bad, I said that it isn't a debate, Science is the only truth, it therefore would win the debate if you had one.

Religion is good for people who don't twist it to fit there evil ways.

That block of text says otherwise.

I'm kidding, I read it all the way through. It basically boils down to "believe what you want", which I already stated, so I guess we're in agreement.

Well in that case, you are correct. The world is made a certain way as proven by science, and anyone arguing against that would need some pretty fantastic evidence. I was under the impression that this was the debate over whether or not religion was viable.

I saw this coming lol. This debate will spin around in circles forever xD

But we just reached an agreement with one another...

I don't think it's pointless, but people rarely change their views on such things, and many take any criticism as a personal attack.
