Official Kingdom Hearts 3D website updated (Gameplay & Downloads sections)

Square Enix have updated their official international website for Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance]. This update adds two new sections-- Gameplay and Downloads. Gameplay is currently incomplete, but will eventually contain many videos showing features from the game (some we've seen before, and some we haven't); where Downloads contains Wallpapers, Facebook Covers and Icon Packs. Since we've had so much success with our previous giveaway competitions, we're deciding to continue the trend and run some more! With Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] having released so recently, we'll be giving away some merchandise relating to the game. This week we'll be pre-ordering the Meow Wow plush toy from Kingdom Hearts 3D. This is an official toy produced by Square Enix, and could be yours for free if you win this week's competition! So, what do you have to do to enter?
- We want you create Kingdom Hearts 3D inspired fan-art! You have a lot of freedom with this, but make sure you create something that is Kingdom Hearts 3D related.
- Your fan-art can be posted on our forum, or linked to in a comment here. If you're looking for a place to upload your fan-art, then we recommend that you use our Fan-made Images section (but still include the image in a post/comment).
- On Saturday, August 18, 2012, we'll pick the best entries and feature them on KH13. If you're the best entry, then we'll contact you and pre-order you a free copy of the Meow Wow plush toy!

Meow Wow plush toy to be sold in NA & UK starting August 30

Forbidden Planet, a retail store in the UK, has confirmed via their website that a Meow Wow (the Dream Eater Spirit in Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance]) plush toy will be sold in the United Kingdom. The plushie will be available on August 30, 2012 for a price of £32.99 (or £29.99 if you pre-order). This toy was also earlier announced for France, so it seems likely that we'll see a release in other regions as well. Thanks to Sammi from KH13 for the find.


Update: It seems that the Meow Wow plush toy will release in North America on August 30, 2012 as well. Various retailers, for example, AAA Anime, have changed their pre-order pages to contain the release date of the toy. The retail price in North America will be US$34.99.

Dream Drop Distance proves to be one of the most risky, experimental, and unique entries into the series. While on a basic level, this is the Kingdom Hearts formula we are all use to, but there is so much more than we might have expected back when the game was first announced. Indeed, this game brings many new things to the Kingdom Hearts table. Nearly everything in this game works or feels different than in its predecessors. Flowmotion changes the very way we explore the world(s). Combat is fast and fluid, using a version of the command system present in previous Kingdom Hearts games, with the addition of new Flowmotion attacks. Nearly every world is new to the series, but even those returning from previous games have been expanded and changed. We have new enemies, and new party members, in the form of Dream Eaters. We even have a dual protagonist story, managed by the Drop System. All of these new factors add up to create the most unique Kingdom Hearts game yet.

Oathkeeper's Oblivion decided to share his own experience with the Kingdom Hearts series, all the way from playing the first game at his friend's house, to playing through Kingdom Hearts 3D. I'm sure that we all share a lot of his thoughts about the series, so read on to see what he said:
I first experienced Kingdom Hearts at a friends house in my elementary school years. He had trouble beating a boss and wished for me to give it a try. I succeeded and was immediately hooked by the wonderful mash-up of RPG elements and Disney worlds which I had grown up with. My friend sold his PS2 out of frustration so I was no longer able to play it. I then specifically went out to buy a PS2 with my savings just to experience the joy of this game all over again. After one of the best gaming experiences of my life I progressed on to Kingdom Hearts 2. My expectations were exceeded, with an amazing story, revamped game play and one of the best summers of my life. No game has has captured my excitement and imagination more than Kingdom Hearts 2.

With so many great entries, it was hard to pick just 3, but we did our best to choose a nice variety of your Kingdom Hearts 3D experiences! We can honestly say that we almost received about 100 great, detailed impressions, so we definitely recommend that you check out all of them. Based on the community's reaction, we can see that Kingdom Hearts 3D is an important must-buy for Kingdom Hearts fans and newbies alike.

Kingdom Hearts II manga to continue on October 12

manganewsjapon have reported that Volume 6 of the Kingdom Hearts II manga series will be releasing in the November issue of Monthly Shōnen Gangan, which goes on sale on October 12, 2012. It is currently unknown when the manga will be available to purchase from Amazon.co.jp and the Square Enix e-STORE, but a date should appear soon.
The Kingdom Hearts II manga was never completed, and took a break when its creator, Shiro Amano, started work on the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days manga. Now that the 358/2 Days manga has recently completed (and will be on sale on September 22), Shiro Amano will focus his efforts on the Kingdom Hearts II manga. Thanks to Rob from KH13 for the tip.

Kingdom Hearts 3D novel "Side Riku" to release September 27

The second Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] novel, Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] Side Riku, has received a release date. The novel will release in Japan on September 27, 2012. This news comes from both the Square Enix e-STORE and Amazon.co.jp, who have both created pre-order pages for the novel. Side Riku will be available for ¥800 (approximately US$10.22), and have a length of 242 pages. Thanks to aibo_ac7 for the tip.

Kingdom Hearts 10th Anniversary soundtrack announced

Square Enix have announced that a new Kingdom Hearts soundtrack is to be released. The soundtrack, called the Kingdom Hearts 10th Anniversary Fan Selection -Melodies & Memories-, will be released in Japan on September 19, 2012 for a price of ¥3,500 (approximately US$43.65). Square Enix have also created a page for the soundtrack on their e-STORE.
The track listing of the soundtrack will be decided by fans! In order to vote for what songs you want to appear on the soundtrack, you can visit the soundtrack's official website and select the song there. The voting period is between June 22, 2012 and July 8, 2012. You can actually have a listen to a sample of every single Kingdom Hearts song from the website, so we highly recommend that you check it out and vote!

Update 1: SQEX.INFO have translated Yoko Shimomura's comments regarding the soundtrack, and these comments can be read below.
Hello, this is Yoko Shimomura, I’m in charge of the series’ music. For always playing the Kingdom Hearts games, and then listening to the soundtracks, thank you so much.
So! To commemorate the 10th anniversary, this project will contain the best tracks of the Kingdom Hearts series. Plus, we’ll be recording the songs chosen by you guys! I’m happy about it, but I’m also super nervous.
Which songs will be chosen? Which songs will unfortunately be chosen? Lol.
To everyone who has played every game up until now, to those who own all the existing soundtracks, and to those who are thinking about buying this soundtrack, now is you chance to recommend which songs you want to hear.
Each and every one of your voices is important to me, this project was implemented with you in mind. I’d be overjoyed if you can find time to participate in the voting.
I’m really, already overfilled with emotions about this.
