I’m leaning towards the former. Ansem SOD could be argued to have simply been behaving like a super intelligent Heartless. He was hunting darkness just like a Shadow, but doing so in a much more elaborate manner.

I think Vanitas understands that he is darkness; he just doesn’t entirely grasp what it means to be darkness.
