I really don't like what the compilation did to Jenova. It's the most interesting part for me in the entirety of FF7

Games/Films/TV Chat
I think he's too simple as a character considering all the shit that happened to him. We see more of him in the compilation but then the compilation made the OG retroactively worse because they removed agency from Jenova

My issue with this is it's all Jenova cosplaying Sephiroth and not the actual Sephiroth. I think the Nibelheim flashback is the only one that really sets up the character and it's just the bare minimum

I don't disagree that the OG has issues, but its one thing to have issues or things that could be better and another being bad and I don't agree with that.

The imagination the narrative leaves behind, which is a lot. His role in the story is being the boogeyman to the party. He haunts the narrative there constantly, which is something he does in remakes too except his face is constantly shoved inside and having him talk everytime by spewing out random nonsense to sound mysterious. The effectiveness of Sephiroth is the lack of screentime. You hear about him constantly. You see the aftermath he leaves behind when he's there before the party. You see the bloodwalls in Shinra's HQ, the giant snake that you can't kill when you meet it for the first time is just dead on a stake. These are all things that set up Sephiroth as a character, he's a powerful man that you have to stop. And the first time you see him shows off his creepiness at the same time. Sure he laughs like a clown but it still shows off who he is. Sephiroth doesn't need more characterization than he does either, he is just a guy who made himself into a monster when learning the truth of what he is and the narrative after that is just him using the lifestream to gain knowledge (black materia) and having a symbiotic relationship with Jenova. This is all in the original game and the story tells it that. Sephiroth is the one in control in the whole narrative.

Because Jill is in a completely different game with a whole different context to her issues. If you want to talk more about that we can, but I don't really get what my opinions on Jill has to do with the discussion here. Gi didn't need more in the OG because their story started and ended with Red's dad sealing them away. I am not denying that Red doesn't do much after that, but to then say he doesn't have anything and being compared to Luna is ridiculous. Rebirth has given them more of a story and we will see how that goes in Revelation but just saying that them getting more screentime and loredumping = better isn't doing much because all they have done is give Red a new storyline that we have no idea on how it will end. The Cetra are a plot device. Their set up in the story are being ancient beings that can talk to the planet. Shinra uses them based on a boogeyman story they believe in with Holyland. That is all their story needs, its a race that doesn't exist anymore. Expanding them is fine but it is not something that is needed to be "better". You still haven't said why Wutai is bad. I genuinely don't see what about Wutai makes it worse in OG for being an attraction place. They lost the war, they couldn't fix themselves and then sold themselves to help its people and Yuffie hated that. Why is that a bad story decision here that makes the game worse? 7R hasn't done anything with Wutai other than setting things up for Revelation, there is no pay off to talk about. For all we know they stumble and fall five minutes into Wutai. If being an attraction place is the issue then Rebirth has done that with 3 locations that never had it be one. Kalm, Corel Prison and Cosmo Canyon all turned into attraction places. Kalm is a tourist trap, Corel is just a place to hang out and have fun for degenares and Cosmo Canyon is also a tourist trap for hippies of the world.

btw I am criticizing the character from the PoV of the 90s when the compilation wasn't out when most people thought Jenova did everything so from that perspective he didn't really do anything. Him being in control is sth that got added with the compilation

we don't see him again as an actual character after the Nibelheim flashback. only in the crater but there he's just pretty much a weird mix of corpse and alien

now that I am thinking about it. Sephiroth peaked with throwing a materia ball at Cloud

Sephiroth in OG is pretty much written like a Stephen King cosmic entity without understanding what makes them scary- Games/Films/TV Chat
it's another plothole in og ff7- Games/Films/TV Chat
