At Lucca Comics and Games 2016-a convention in Italy, Shinji Hashimoto was present. Shinji is the man who invented the idea of Kingdom Hearts (to the Disney executive in the elevator), executive producer of Square Enix BD3 and is an executive producer for FF in general.

 

 

 

During this convention he said that he understands that people want another title in the FF10 series. He says this because he saw how well the remasters did- selling 260K on the PS3 and Vita in the first 2 weeks in the USA, on Steam it hit over 244,000 sales as of November 2016. However, because of people like Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase working on FF7R and KH3 they really can't do it just yet. Therefore there is no time and he urges fans to wait longer.

If X-3 were to happen I hope it's not following that awful audio drama. Also, do they want Nomura to direct X-3? Kitase directed X and FF7 so why is Nomura now directing sequels and remakes to Kitase's games? 

 

 

I think they mean that Nomura and Kitase are taking up too much resources for their games for them to make X-3. Besides, is Kitase involved with either KH3 or FF7R? He might be working on something else entirely, even more resources taken up then.

Kitase is not working on KH3 and doesn't work on KH games that much. He's the producer of FF7 remake and the original director of Final Fantasy 7.

I wouldn't put it out of the question, Final Fantasy VIII has sold 8.5 million copies worldwide. Square Enix are not going to sleep on that high of a market share.

The PC port of FF8 was shoddy and downright awful (because none of them really cared for the game) and it never made it's way to smartphones like FF7, FF13 or FF9. FFX sold more and is more well received in general, it's still popular due to the success of the HD remasters. 8 was never intended to have a sequel or a prequel. 

 

In 2014 both FF10 and 10-2 combined had sold over 14 million copies. Oh and Shinji Hashimoto has said himself that the critical reception to the games were excellent. I don't think he's ever even been asked about FF8, why would he? There's no hype for it anymore, the game is 17 years old. Yoshinori Kitase is busy with more important things.

 

Ask yourself this-is the hype for FF8 still there? FF7 had a movie, several spin off titles, a PS3 port, a PC port and PS4 port hence why it was still so popular in the modern era-not to mention the fact it saved their company. FF10 still has the hype of the 2 remasters to go off of.It was their first shot at a game without Sakaguchi and was also the first game to receive a direct sequel, it won tons of awards and spots in best games lists. FF10 means a lot to that company since it was the first 3D FF too.

 

What has FF8 done for the company? You know the real reason people bought FF8-because FF7 was so good. If it had come out as any other title it wouldn't have done well. People bought 7, realised how amazing it was and were like 'I have to see what the next one is like!' Amongst the hardcore fanbase FF8 is despised and doesn't even have a cult following like FF9 does.

 

Just to end off, everything in FF8 was resolved within the game. We played as Laguna so why do we need to learn more? What else was left?

That'd be very cool. I really need to get X/X-2, give my poor Vita something to live for. It makes sense that they'd be waiting for those two to be freed up, considering how many great titles they've worked on over the years. I don't have an answer as to why they keep having Nomura work on so many of Kitase's games' sequels, though if I were to hazard a guess, it might have something to do with the fact that he enjoys continuing a story? I mean if he can keep Kingdom Hearts going, then logically he could keep anything going, right? At least, I'm guessing that's the thought behind putting him there, for all we know it could just be because he's such a trusted talent and it's just a huuuuuge coincidence that he keeps getting placed on Kitase sequels.

 

On another note, I wonder if they would still plan on making FF7 sequels even after releasing all of FF7R. I mean with this essentially being a reimagining of the story, I would imagine that it might just make all of the Compilation stuff almost uncanon, unless it was specifically written to keep all of that stuff in mind. FFX, I'd say, is the second best FF game in the series (right behind VII). FFX-3 is definitely something I'd love to see. Hopefully it doesn't end up as XIII-3 (The game wasn't bad honestly, but got a horrible reception amongst quite a few people)

Sequels could happen and the final parts of the remake could have extra content. In FF7 dirge of cerberus there is actually a hint towards a sequel that within the ending.

 

I highly doubt they would retcon the compilation, the game will stick to the core story and won't go off path too much, but the purpose of the remake was to surpass the original. They'll add new bits of lore but also redo any weird things or anything out of place and they might even get rid of some stuff that's not needed.

Well as long as those stories are kept in tact. I know Crisis Core would be too popular to retcon, and I do hope that they do touch up that secret ending from Dirge of Cerberus, it's been 10 years and still no word on a continuation.

I'm fully aware about Final Fantasy VIII circumstances. That doesn't change the potential of it being milked. Final Fantasy IV had a sequel that didn't release until 2008. That's a 17 years difference. If Square Enix can expand the universes of VII and XIII then they can do the same with any other installment in the franchise to their contempt. Final Fantasy VIII isn't "despised" (Dirge of Cerberus is despised), it's just not the expected follow-up. Clearly, you're not a fan of the entry because various publications have provided positive reviews for it.

FF8 is actually my second favourite FF game behind FF10 and I regard it has having one of the best stories in any videogame .  

 

 

FF4 was the first FF game to have a real story other than 4 heroes setting out to save the world. The reviews for 8 and nowhere near as glowing as 10. Do you see the pattern? FF7 saved the company and brought JRPG to the west, FF4 was the first one to have a real story, FF10 was the first fully 3D FF game and the first one without Sakaguchi, FF13 is loved by many within the company and was the start of a new era/new setting of FF-Fabula Nova Crystallis. All those games did something for either Square Enix or the fandom.

 

If FF12 got a sequel on the DS and 8 still hasn't then I doubt it ever will.
