The classic turns 18 today! Released this day in 1999 and has sold over 8.5 million copies (as of 2013)! FF8 was originally the fastest selling Final Fantasy until FF13. This game was also where Tetsuya Nomura's manga inspired designs shone through,
Directed by Kitase, Hiroyuki Ito (FF9, FF12, FF6) was the one who came up with the idea of using Guardian Forces. Nomura wanted them to be unique so he took care in their design, going as far as including Leviathan in a demo for player feedback. Motion capture was used to give the characters a more realistic feeling unlike 7 where you had a lion and a furry in your party. Edea was actually meant to be in FF7 but was then recycled into 8. Scenario writer Kazushige Nojima intended to give players insight into Squall's thoughts rather than have them interpret it themselves like Cloud in FF7.
FF8 was more of a weird Final Fantasy. The story was extremely out there yet managed to be corny. I like how they handled time travel, the story was complex but for good reasons (unlike other games...) and Squall's character development was incredible!
