Some people like to call it Vanitas' lingering sentiment. In the game, on the information board right before you battle it, it is called Vanitas' lingering spirit. After you beat it, in the journal it is called Vanitas remnant. Why can't it stick with one name?

I think maybe they're trying to keep it a mystery. It sounds especially to me with the word "sprit", that he still exists, and there is no way to ever be rid of him. If that makes any sense, haha. They might not want to give something in there away.
