Archie's "Sonic the Hedgehog" Officially Cancelled

Posted

Moments ago, SEGA officially announced the cancellation of the 24 year long comic series, Sonic the Hedgehog, and it's allied comic spin off, Sonic Universe. Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog was the longest running comic series based on a video game, and the 2nd longest running comic series of all time.

Read Sonic the Hedgehog's tweet here.

However, SEGA hints that another Sonic series shall be made under a different company sometime soon- it's currently unknown which company they will choose, nor if any of the classic characters will be retained.

Really sad to see the comics go, obviously. I was HUGE fan of the series, especially pre-SGW. However, it's time to say goodbye to Sally, Antoine, Rotor, Bunnie, and my personal favorite, Shard the Metal.

I am really sad about this news. Goodbyes are always hard, especially when these characters are so well known to the Sonic comic fans. It's hard to say, but Goodbye Sonic Comics, and thank you for all the good times you have given me!

(Edit: Thank goodness they are going to make another comic book series with a new publisher! I hope that series turns out well! Here's hoping on that part! :))

Oh wow, so Sonic had a long comic book run, huh? That's pretty impressive! I wonder why they went about cancelling it if it had been around for almost two and a half decades. Were sales declining?

Back in 2012, one of their writeres decided he wanted to go solo and wanted to use his characters from the comics, and ended up suing Archie and SEGA so he can use them. After that, Sega wasn't allowed to use those characters anymore, so they killed most of them off, and soft rebooted the universe.

Oh wow, that's one humongous blow! Who knew that real life problems would cause such catastrophic effects for the characters in the comics, eh?

I thought the lawsuit had something to do with Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood?

That was also part of the lawsuit, but not cause (If I recall), which is why it never got a sequel.

Ah, I remember hearing about that game. I heard it was a good Sonic RPG!

May contain spoilers to Sonic Mania & Sonic Forces: If Sega allowed Archie to make a final arc it should lead to the IDW Sonic comics. Sonic, Knuckles, The Chaotix, every Sonic character & the Freedom Fighters discover a unstable source of energy somewhere in the planet. Eggman would discover the same energy that both sides got to the source which is the Phantom Ruby, and during the battle the Phantom Ruby's power activates causing a distortion in time & space ending the Archie Sonic & beginning the IDW Sonic.

Haven't played it yet myself, but we shall see!

Yeah, hope you enjoy the game if you get it!
