WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO THE 2018 WORLD CUP THREAD!

 

Hey, hey, hey, I know that there's still a month until the opening match, but nothing beats a hype thread to facilitate discussion! Post absolutely anything and everything about the World Cup here so we can keep it separate from the general football thread, which has been used for mostly league matches. The World Cup is it's own beast.

 

I'm also making it now because I won't have time to later and I really want to format it well.

This World Cup is already getting attention from the fact that so many heavy hitters haven't even made it! Traditional powerhouses like Holland and Italy crashed out in Qualifying, and even mid-table mainstays like the USA couldn't make it this year! But we've also had the debuts of small countries like Panama, who had some questionable techniques in their final qualifying match, but nonetheless we're happy to see them make it!

yep, unfortunately there wasn't enough options for one question, so i'll make a "none in this category if the team you want to vote for isn't there. Thanks for telling me!

To kick things off, should we talk about the qualifying stages? It was the one of the most dramatic ones I've ever had the pleasure to witness. There was a point early on where it looked like Germany might not even make it! Hopefully the Finals will be like that too, dramatic victories are the best by far!

Welp, Portugal is screwed, we have to face Spain

 

I'd say that the top contenders for the winners of the World Cup are still Germany and Spain

Yeah, Germany always delivers unfortunately enough for the rest of us

 

But if I had to bet on a dark horse I think Colombia have a really good chance of winning. They can easily top their group, so they could get past the second round easily enough as well as they'd probably be against us.

 

Quarter finals might be hard though as they'd almost certainly be playing Germany.

 

But they're still my dark horse

Are you sure about Germany? I had in mind that it was going great. Something like 8-10 wins with 10 games. But i was not follwing the qualifying so intensly.

It was right at the start of the qualifying stage, they were struggling to score goal against much weaker countries.

I go with Spain, Germany, Brazil.

Yeah, going into this competition they are easily the favourites. I'm hoping for an upset though, it would make things so much more interesting
