From what I gather, the original FF7 already happened in another timeline and the watchers of fates (those ghost things you've seen in the trailers) are making sure the characters don't alter the events of the OG story. Sephiroth I guess, knows that he loses in the end of the OG so he wants Cloud and co. to "defy fate" and fight the ghost thingys. Also Cloud has a Zack flashback and its implied that he survived the attack in Crisis Core and is alive in another timeline.
