I'm currently filling out things for my senior year in high school and one of them is an application to join a class. We have to answer questions and do a few other things, but I came across one question that really got me to think:

What does the world need more of, scientists or artists? Why?

It took me a little while to choose which one I'd want more of in the world. (which I'll edit in my choice later, cbf right now. /shotshot)

So, what's your opinions? Does the world need more scientists or artists?

Discuss as much as you like, but remember to be respectful of other's opinions. ;3

*edit* You should explain WHY you make your choice, not just simply state your answer. If you aren't going to explain your choice, don't even post. ._.

In my opinion, we need more scientists. We have lots of creative people in the world today, but we need people that can discover things that could save the world one day. We need more people trying to find the cure to cancer, HIV, AIDS, etc.

We need more people to find out how to stop the glaciers from melting so the world won't flood.

I agree as an artist I can honestly say we need more scientists!

scientists are more important. period.

We need more scientists. There's not enough lol.

We need more scientists, there's already enough artists (says me, the guy who sucks at chemistry in every way, shape and form, but loves making random pictures)

Scientist all the way.

I honestly think we need more artists.

I mean yeah, sure, scientists can cure illnesses, advance technology, and all that other important pile of crap. But seriously, the world would be one stiff place. If we didn't have more artists, or any at all, there might as well not be any color to the world. Artists bring sound --music. I don't think I could go a day without music. And honestly, there isn't a lot of good music these days. I mean, the world's turning to Autotune to make 'good music'. We need more artists with talent (and ones that sound their age). We also need songs that aren't just about throwing your hands up in the air, saying "AY OH", brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack, or riding someone's disco stick.

Artists also make the world a bit better to look at. They make it so we can hang posters and paintings on our walls so they're not bare. They make statues of heroes to respect. People paint murals of something important to them, or the city. It can bring a bit of pride to the city it was painted in. Sure, even graffiti is art. It can be enjoyable to look at (when it's not offensive). Heck, even sidewalk chalk drawings are art.

Art is a way to express yourself. Whether it be with words, drawings, music, singing, or dance, it's something beautiful. It would be horrible if people couldn't express themselves. If we had a bit more artists in the world, I think the world would be a little bit brighter, and possibly kinder.

We need a balance of both, imo. With more scientists, we'd have a lot of technological advancements and more ways to control disease, but life would be boring and bland.

But with more artists, though we'd have entertainment and ways to make life more enjoyable, nothing would ever get done, disease would be more widespread and out of control, and we wouldn't have the proper technology to do important things.

It's a double edged sword either way.

I honestly think we need more artists.

In my opinion I think that artist have reached the maximum influence they have already. This is not to slander and disrespect artist, far from it actually. But when was the last time an artist showed up where everyone knows his name and what he has accomplished? When was the last time a monument was built that people traveled thousands of miles just to see?

As in the case of musicians, they primarily serve to preserve the past. Music started to die after the 90's and it looks like there is no chance of recovery. One could argue that this would be a reason for more musicians to appear but it seems that they will only be dwarfed by a boy band, who's fanbase consist of primarily 12 year old girls.

The only art I see being useful for the future of the world is that in web design, game making, future buildings, and interfaces for electronics

I disagree, with scientist we get more advancements in technology which can be used to entertain ourselves. Plus they will further expand the space industry and hopefully send humans to the stars one day. Supernovas, nebula's, and galaxies are a beauty that no mortal can ever hope to capture with a paintbrush.

With this said, don't think I'm an art hater and hate artist. I appreciate art and go to exhibits all the time.

Technology creates more problems than it solves. What was the worst invention for the planet. The car. Yet we still use and develop further this technology that so harms the environment.

Every single technological breakthrough has further destroyed the balance of the world in some small way.

That being said, i still think we need more scientists. Science is not always boring. Art is not always interesting. It depends on the beholder. And without science, Humans would be wiped out by other mammals.

Honestly, I think we need more scientists. I love to draw and I love art class, but I think we need more science.

I'm big into science, and I think eventually it could solve a lot of world issues. Think of the littlest things it's done--like let us have this forum. And then think on a larger scale--people who have lost limbs can have prostetic limbs, we can save people from disasters more efficiently, and lots of other things. I think our world needs more scientists.

There's an absolute balance that is necessary. In order to achieve that balance, the requirement right now is for more scientists to step up. The 20th century was one of the most important periods regarding rapid expansion in the fields of physics, medicine, astronomy, technology, and countless other things. We are still in that rapid state of expansion and are using all the new knowledge and resources we received from the 20th century and applying it now to move even faster and more efficiently. Art, undoubtedly, is a necessity to our world. But we have so much of it. Our environment, our society, and our media is constantly surrounded by it. Kids who don't know what they want in life often take up studying some form of fine art or music-related study in college. Many people, too, are "lazy," in the sense that don't have the drive or stimulation to put in the dedication and heavy thinking required to be some sort of a scientist. We need more people who are willing to put in the demanding amount of thought and work that goes into being a scientist. We are in the midst of a major scientific age, and it won't keep moving without the help of many more scientists.

As I'm an autodidact artist and science-interested humble person, I'd say we need more scientist.

Merely because scientist is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration

Which means 1% fun and 99% locking yourself up in humid white room risking yourself to chemical hazard or faint of overwork, and all this done and only few people say "you did the 99%? Cool!" of course, they are not all like that, there are those who expose themselves to snakebite, centipede bite, lions, crocs, breaks some legs, eaten by Komodo, long walk deep into the poisonous jungle of Australia or Amazon or somewhere unknown... I mean, how hard could it be??

While artist is 99% inspiration and 1%... risking yourself of extreme loneliness and mental twist... If you're in bad luck, you may (please cmiiw) ended up cutting your own ear like Gogh...

I mean seriously guys, scientists now (I think) are being undervalued... I am saying this as an self-claimed artist ...

I Think both is a good thing. Without art, we would never have chruches, homes, buildings, disney, kingdome hearts, no imagenition, and we ould to rationial. we need these crazy ideas to make things, which sure people rip off other things to make themselves look good (i.e. the cape is a rip off of the phantom, and the sprite, wth soem orignallty to it.)

Scientiest thoguth can build and porve theories , liek time travel(its real its possibleits ahppening right now as I type this to everyone.) as easier o t travel forward in time harder to go back,, cure AIDS, CANCER, Science art go hand in hand and imspire one another together.

We need an equal value of each.

Science is incredibly important for the future and even present day.

I mean there will probably /never/ be a cure for cancer, or aids. Both have been around a long time and the best they can do is some meds or chemo/radiation. Plus even if they did create it, doesn't mean it'll end or be safe for humans in the long run. But we do need scientists for many things such a meds and saving the earth, and probably a million other things I can't think of.

Art, without any we would not be on the computer with simple thing like layout and siggies and avis, instead it would be bland text. TV and video games are art forms, without art we wouldn't even have games and tv would suck (if it existed). They would be no book covers, no packages, no ads, no beautiful houses.

Overall, if one had to be chosen, it would be science. But that isn't the case, they both can, will, and should co-exist.

Science is an artform.
