"Training is a good idea." Chuck said. "I didn't know Marcus or Vincent well, having just met him recently, but I still felt a connection, being an inhabitor as well."

Joy!” Mariah screamed in panic. Joy was slumped over, and she held him in her arms, placing one palm against his cheek. “Joy, stay with me!” she said desperately. This couldn't be happening. Marcus's death was bad enough, but losing Joy... Even though she realized she hadn't known Joy for very long, the thought of losing him was unbearable.

Then, without warning, Tifa took over. “Cloud,” she said, her voice just a little more composed than Mariah's had been. “You can't go yet. We all need you. I need you. Hang on, I know you and Joy are strong enough. Please.

Joy opened his eyes. "I...who said anything about me dying?" Calder stood up. "Okay, where did it come from?" Joy looked up at him, and Calder knew. Calder cursed. "I should have known. Livia said she wanted her revenge, and she can control time. Look, I'll find her". He looked over at Chuck. "Can we land or something? Or should we keep on? Joy needs medical attention if we don't want to lose anyone else."

Mariah, in control of her own body again, let out a huge, shaky sigh, and closed her eyes, holding back tears. “Joy,” she breathed, happy that he was responsive. She looked over at Calder as he spoke, then at Chuck. “Please, let's land as soon as we can. We need to get him some help,” she said.

"Yeah." Chuck said. He tirected the Bahamut and landed it near a hospital. Chuck helped them off and dismissed the summon and said "Alright, let's get him some help."

Calder looked at Joy. "Come on. I'll support you." Slowly, Calder led Joy into the hospital. He was put in the E.R. and Calder sat in the

waiting room. He looked at his hands, which were stained with blood. He sighed, and looked down. How could 2 villains do this? Marcus was dead, and now Joy was hurt. Joy. No matter how much his personality was starting to match Cloud's, he was still kind and cared fora ll of them.

Mariah also sat in the waiting room, with her head in her hands. Even though it seemed that Joy would be alright at this point, it still hurt her to see him wounded like that. With all that was going on, she was now exhausted, and hoped the doctors would be able to fix him up soon. It shouldn't be much longer now, since those with Inhabitors could heal quickly, but of course she had no way of really knowing.

She looked over at Calder, and realized that she hadn't been able to officially meet him through all the chaos. He looked younger than the rest of them. Was he still living with his parents? Did they wonder where he was now? He also appeared saddened by they state that Joy was in. She decided to talk to him and try to lighten the mood. “Hey, I'm Mariah,” she said. She almost held out her hand for him to shake it, but saw the blood on his hands and refrained. “Joy will be okay,” she said, softening her voice a little more. “I've seen him get stabbed right through the chest before, and he sprang back quickly.” She winced a little at the memory of what James did to him in the governor's mansion, then changed the subject. “Anyway, what's your story? Aren't your parents worried about you?”

"So, how are we going to do this Caius?" Cain asked. "We'll lead them to the Assassin's hold. Your old playground. The corners are tight, and the whole place is basicly an underground Labyrinth. It'll be easy to divide them," Caius said. "Great, so we divide them up...and then what?" Cain asked. "Once divided we'll start to frighten them with a few of the training tools...the explosives, the spears hidden under the false floors, and ohhh yes the fire bombs. If they don't die from it all, they'll be injured at least right? That will make fighting them one on one a hell of a lot easier," Caius said laughing. "Ok, that's an excellent plan, but how do we pull it off?" Cain asked. "Simple. We will send a message by kidnapping a useful political target....remember that boy we killed? His father is coming to town, to begin his sort of 'my son is dead help us catch the international criminal who did it tour' he'll be here in twelve hours," Caius said. "Wait....how do you know that?" Cain asked. "It's simple really, when we stabbed the boy I simply put the location of your apartment, your telephone number, and gave your Japanese alias. His daddy will be coming to give the information to the Japanese authorities. I know it got to his father because I used a tracking paper for the note," Caius ended.

Cain couldn't believe his ears....the plan was so devious. So diabolical...he wished he had thought of it. Meanwhile, Gov. White entered his private jet and was headed for Japan. He was so heart broken, but yet...so very furious. He couldn't see straight.

Jared put down his phone when August didn't pick up, but immediately saw that he was receiving a call from Alexandre. He accepted the call and brought the phone to his ear again. “Alex, what's up?”

It looks like you and your friends don't need any covering up. I just found out that the governor has very specific information on the man who killed his son, the information doesn't match any of you. You should all be safe.”

Who is it, then?” Jared asked.

Someone in Japan. I imagine this Cain you were telling me about may have given the information. He could be framing someone else, or he could be leading the authorities right to himself.”

That sounded odd, but at this point, Jared wouldn't put anything past Cain. “Well, thanks for telling me. This is all good to know.”

Yeah. And Jared? Good luck.”

Thanks, man. Sounds like we're all going to need it.” Jared switched off his phone, took off, and was in Japan within a matter of hours. He tried again to call August to find out where he was.

Calder smiled a little bit, but looked at his hands. They had a lot of blood on them. "My parents...I never knew them really. I lived with my aunt all my life. I mean, I guess she was nice, but I never felt like a belonged. I ran away. I thought I felt Yuna's presence, but it's gone." he sighed. "You...really like him, don't you?" Calder's mind wandered back to his house, and how he watched the destruction happening. "I ran away...to help all of you."

Mariah looked at Calder sympathetically. She had always felt like she belonged, growing up in a fairly normal family, and couldn't imagine what his situation would've been like. Even if you liked the people you lived with, not feeling quite at home with them had to suck. And Yuna...Mariah remembered that was the love interest of Tidus in Final Fantasy X. Poor kid. She wondered if she had seen that girl before...

In answer to Calder's question, Mariah averted her eyes a little and said, “Yes. It's kind of weird, actually, because if you think about it, Joy and I still don't even know each other that well. At first I thought that I only cared about him so much because of the connection between Tifa and Cloud. But then I realized...maybe the reason they chose us is because of our personalities. Maybe, in choosing us, Tifa and Cloud inadvertently chose two people that would have fallen in love anyway, even if they had never Inhabited us.” Mariah shrugged. “I'm just thinking out loud, but I think that's the reason I felt a connection with Joy so quickly. Anyway, you ran away from home? That had to take some courage. I'm glad you're with us, though,” Mariah said, smiling.

Calder nodded. "Thanks." He then closed his eyes, and remembered his house.

Joy sat on a chair, thinking. Thanks to Cloud, his wounds had mostly healed. He stood up, and was about to walk out when he heard Cloud in his mind. Are you really going to let them get hurt for you again? Joy stopped. What do you mean? Cloud responded, Mariah doesn't deserve worrying about you. Just leave. Joy shook his head. You barely talk to me, why should I listen to you? Cloud coughed. So Tifa won't get hurt. Joy nodded. I guess...so.

Calder came back. "We can visit Joy now." He walked up to his room, and opened the door. The window was open, the curtains fluttering in the breeze.

Mariah's eyes widened. “Joy?” she called. She ran over to the window, but there was nothing to be seen. She looked at Calder. “Where is he?” she asked, as if he would magically know the answer.

Cloud...why do you do this?” Tifa said.

Tifa, what's going on? Mariah thought.

Trust me, I know Cloud, and he and Joy are fine.” Tifa's voice was sad. “He probably ran away because he feels that he's putting everyone else in danger.”

I see...but I think he's more concerned about you than anyone else. Either way, we have to go after them!

I'm going to have to say no to that this time,” Tifa said tiredly.

What?! Are you crazy? I thought the whole reason you were here was to protect Cloud! And you're just going to let him wander around alone with some maniac targeting him? I thought you loved him!

I do!! But Mariah, you don't realize how exhausted your body is right now! What you and I both need to do right now is rest, or else we'll be too weak, and we'll get ourselves killed! Then who will help him?!” The fierceness in Tifa's tone startled Mariah. She had never known her to get so frustrated like that. Tifa then calmed down a little. “You know that I'm just as scared for Cloud as you are for Joy. But he can take care of himself for a little while. Maybe he just needs time to figure things out. As soon as we've gotten the rest we need, we'll look for him, if he hasn't already found us.”

Mariah knew that Tifa was right, but it didn't make her feel any better. She addressed Calder despondently. “Tifa says Joy will be fine, and recommends that we get some rest. Let's just find a place to spend the night.” She sighed.

Calder pulled out his phone, and looked up hotels in the areas. "Uh, there's one down the block from here. Come on." He walked down the street, and walked into the hotel. "A room for two, please." Calder looked at the price. We better recover soon.

Joy walked past a motorcycle shop, and stopped. Cloud coughed. Are you serious? Joy walked in, and looked at the prices. "I could afford a cheap one." Cloud grumbled. Next thing Joy knew, he was starting his new motorcycle. "We could get cross-country with this." And then they were off. The sun was setting, and it was eerily beautiful.

I've got this,” Mariah said, and without waiting for Calder's response, she paid the fee for the room. “It's okay,” she told Calder reassuringly. “I've been saving up for an emergency, and I guess this sort of counts.”

She went to their hotel room and headed straight into the bathroom for a shower. As she took off her shirt, she felt something strange on her back. She went to the mirror and examined her back, and was shocked to see two very long scars there. Then she remembered where they must have come from: the time James had slashed her at the governor's mansion. She ran her fingers along the scars unhappily. How unattractive, she thought. Guess I'll have to say goodbye to wearing bikinis at the beach. Then she laughed at herself. Even with everything that was going on around them, she was now thinking these insignificant thoughts. Maybe it was because she felt like she was finally able to breathe again, if only for a little while. She showered and then soaked in the ofuro for a long time, sorting out her thoughts. How she was going to find Joy. How she and the others were going to defeat Cain and Livia. Her mind even wandered to James. She wondered what had happened to him after he cut off his arm. She finally got out of the tub, put on the new nightclothes she had bought on the way to the hotel, and went straight to bed, falling into a dreamless sleep.

Joy's lights sweeped across the dark road, and for once Joy felt scared. He arrived at a small town, and got off. He was out of gas. As he started to fill it up, the lights started to flicker up and down the street. Instinctively, he pulled out his Buster Sword. "Who's there?" The wind was the only thing that answered him. He stopped at a hotel, and walked up to his room. It was barely anything. He took off his clothes, and looked down at his wound. The blood had stopped, but it was a pretty big wound. He took a shower, the water pouring over his head. He got out, pulled on some underwear and pants, and sat facing the wall the whole night.

Calder walked in to see Mariah already asleep. He got ready, and slipped into the other bed.

(Wow, sorry guys. I was gone for a weekend and a lot happened. I think I can write off my character's absence, though.)

As soon as August had told the others to get rest and train, he had flown Zodiark to a close by abandoned clinic, due to be torn down from structural issues but still housing many of the cots it had used before. August immediately set to work with fierce determination, summoning and practicing with each weapon to mastery, stopping only to get something to eat, sleep in one of the cots, or tidy up and relive himself in the restroom. After relentlessly training his weapon skill, he set to mastering the concurrences. Vaan would give him a pointer every now and again, but mostly sensed to stay off to the side of things, letting August work this out for himself. The one major suggestion Vaan made was that August learn to be light on his feet and agile, as Vaan's particular skills benefited those who didn't jump head long into the fray like Cloud's did. He was a Sky Pirate, after all. When August felt confident enough, he summoned Belias the Gigas as a training partner to fight against him. He was doing pretty well until in the middle of the fight his phone rang, distracting him. He was hit by a Painflare, but quickly dispelled Belias and went over to his phone, taking it with him on his way to grab medical supplies for the burn. Checking it, he found that he'd missed a call from Jared, the pilot from before. Memories that he'd pushed aside in his training came to the surface once again. He'd had little human contact since the event, shutting himself off mostly from the world. Looking back at it, he realized just how stupid that had been, as times like these are what friends were for. That's why, when Jared called again, he answered.

"Hey there Jared, I take it you're ready to join back up with us? We're in Japan, or at least all of the others were when I last saw them. I kinda went off to train on my own. If you meet me here then we could do some training for prep, and I think I have the number of Mariah, Tifa's host, from way back when we met at the hospital." At the same time I met Marcus, he thought, but pressed on. "You can just follow the GPS coordinates in my phone. What's up on your end?"

Mariah... Jared thought. August must be talking about the familiar-looking girl among the group that fought James. Her name sounded familiar, too, but he still couldn't remember from where. “Sure, give me her number. I may not use it, but it couldn't hurt in case of some emergency. Well, not much is going on over here,” Jared replied. “I made sure that we wouldn't get into any trouble over...what occurred earlier. Turns out we're good to go, and the governor is hunting down someone here in Japan. I'm sure Cain has something to do with it.” As Jared spoke, he looked up August's coordinates on his phone. It would take him at least an hour to reach August. “Anyway, I'll be there in a little while. Don't train too hard before I get there!” Jared tried to say this last part lightly, but there was some sincerity to his words. The guy sounded fatigued, physically and mentally, and the last thing he needed to do was wear himself down before a potentially huge battle.

"No problem, I'll text you the number and rest up until you get here. It was about time for me to take a break anyway," August replied. He was feeling a bit tired, to be honest, though he had made sure to get decent sleep and rest. He guessed that there was only so far one could push their body without it pushing back.

Joy stood up and stretched as the gentle sunlight filtered through the window. He pulled out his bag, and ruffled through it to quickly find some adequate clothing. He slipped the shirt over his head, and pulled out his cell-phone. No new texts. He wondered when they would realize they could text him or call him. He gathered his stuff, and sauntered out of the hotel in a way only Cloud could. He got on his motorcycle, and was gone before you could say 'Buster Sword'.

***

Calder stretched, and started to get ready for the day. He pulled off his old clothes, and slipped into his new ones carefully. He walked over to Mariah, and gently shook her. "Time to wake up."

Alright, see you,” Jared said, hanging up the phone. He got into a bus that dropped him off about a mile from where August was, then walked the rest of the way. When he saw the abandoned clinic, it gave him the creeps. He was never one for abandoned buildings, especially ones where probably hundreds of people had died in the past. Still, he could see why this place would be ideal for training. He walked up to the building and entered through the front door.

Mariah awoke when Calder shook her. She simply nodded, too groggy to speak, and got out of bed, then went into the bathroom to change her clothes. She felt incredibly refreshed, and realized this was the first time in a while that she had woken up somewhere other than a hospital. As got out of the bathroom and went to the nightstand by her bed, she thought of Joy, hoping that wherever he was, he had been able to rest as well as she had.

I think now would be a good time to call Joy... Tifa said.

Mariah nodded. Maybe he and Cloud had been able to sort their thoughts a little by now. She picked up her cell phone and dialed Joy's number, then waited for him to answer.

(Hey, Azure Flame, I'm curious about what's going on with Chuck and James right now... :P)

The govenor was escorted by ten armed police officers and a Japanese television crew. "We're inside an abandanded warehouse that used to be use by an old Japanese gang...wait...what was that?" the camera man announced. Just then he was cut in half. The police fired, but ended up killing eachother. The govenor and camera were picked up by Cain. He pointed the camera at his face and said," I know this is recording live. Listen to me, warehouse 59, pier dock 74. Tokyo harbor. I'm waiting with Mr. White." Then he slammed the camera on the ground. The feed was being instantly transmitted all over Japan.

Joy heard the cell phone beep in his pocket. He looked down, and pulled it out. 'Mariah.' He flipped it open. "Yello." The road he was driving on seemed to be deserted, but it was hard to tell. He continued, and he could distantly see mountains in the distance. He looked closely, and they seemed to be the Appalachian mountains. "So, Mariah, what's up with you lately? Are you well?" Was it him, or was the road getting darker when it shouldn't be?
