I might need braces... Help please!

Posted

Recently I went to the dentist and he said that I might need braces for my teeth.

He still didn't confirm it, but I want to know.

How does it feel like having braces? I never had braces and I never met a person with braces except on TV.

Is there anyone here on kh13 with braces?

I'm scheduled to get braces in a few months or sooner, i dont remeber. My brother had braces before. He told me that it feels kinda tight when you first get them but you get used to it after a while

Well, it is actually quite hard to explain, even though i have been wearing braces for 2-3 years now http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smiley-confuse.png

If your afraid if it will hurt, then don't worry, your mouth will only be a bit sore when you get the braces on and when you get them off again.

But it of course depends on what braces you are getting, and how good your dentist is (If your gonna get ordinary braces, and the dentist places the string, that will be going through the buttons on your teeth, just a bit to the left side, the string will sting the inside of your cheek... Not a nice feeling http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smiley-confuse.png)

this is the best i can say. i had braces few years back and at first they hurt but i got used to them. When i first got home with them my mouth hurt so much i didnt want to eat any hard food so i only ate ramen for a few days but after that they were fine. Also be careful of some food. They can get between the braces and your teeth and it is annoying

Well that's a relief, I thought they were always going to be tight.

The dentist's a bit cheap, but he's the best in town.

I hope I get good ones :/

o3o -reads all this- Oh well.. I have to get them too later this year.

when you first get them, the first few days your mouth will be sore, but it goes away, and everytime you go there to get a new wire you will feel sore for that day. But after that it doesnt hurt at all. The only problem i have is the fact that i cant eat certain things

I actually have braces now (on my top teeth) next week Wednesday I'm getting my bottom braces. At first they feel a bit weird and tight and it's hard to eat but after a while you get used to them. When you have braces there are certain things you can't eat or drink, and after you eat you have to brush your teeth.

I have braces on, what i do is when your first eating with them, chew slowly. When brushing them try to get all the places. I'm getting my braces off soon, so I thinking it is going to feel weird when I get them off.

What others have said. It will hurt in the beginning but just for a few days. You may want to look at what you can't eat while you have braces. Most of those things weren't stuff I usually eat so I wasn't too bothered by watching my diet. And even the mild duds I used to love, after I had braces, didn't even feel like eating anymore xD Just remember to think about what you eat. My friend who had braces ignored that and broke brackets and wires all the time. Because of that she had braces until her Junior year of High School x.x

I don't want to scare you, and of course every person has a different experience, but I hate it when people are dishonest with me just to make me feel better (not saying that anyone here is doing that), so I won't sugar-coat my story. It's been a long time since I've had braces, but I'll try to be as accurate as possible.

So I got my bottom braces on first. As far as I remember, they hurt pretty badly the first day or two, and I could only eat soft foods like mashed potatoes during that time, but then it wasn't so bad. Each time I got them tightened, I don't think it ever hurt--it kind of tickled, actually, but I think that's pretty uncommon. xD

Then I got my top braces. The first night, THEY HURT SO BADLY I COULDN'T SLEEP. I couldn't even eat yogurt. So I advise you to have the painkillers (the strongest you can get over-the-counter) ready as soon as you get the top ones on. I can't remember how long the pain lasted, but the first day was the worst, and it might have still hurt for the next couple of days, but not as badly. As for getting them tightened, it was pretty much the same thing as the bottom braces.

Once you get used to them, they're not that bad, it just feels like they're crowding your mouth a little bit. Like others have said, be careful what you eat so that you don't break off any brackets, brush your teeth lots because food will get stuck between braces and teeth pretty easily, blah blah blah. Oh, and just to warn you, braces will cause your toothbrushes to wear out faster, so you'll need to get new ones more frequently.

And finally, whenever you get your braces tightened (i.e. you're given a new wire) some of the wire might be poking out at the very back. If it bothers you, don't be afraid to ask the dentist/orthodontist to cut the excess wire off. If the jerk refuses, be sure to have wax, which you should be able to find near the toothpaste and all that in any store, and cover the part that's poking you with a big ball of it.

I'm wearing top and bottom braces write now! :3 truth is, it doesnt hurt as much as the orthodonist says it would. Yeah, it feels a little sore, but it will usually go away overnight or the next day.

Here's a list of stuff you CAN'T eat:

Caramel, taffy, bubblegum(mint gum isnt as bad), popcorn, hard candy, and chewing ice. I eat almost ALL of these things all of the time, but for your first few weeks you may want to avoid them until you've gotten used to them. I also suggest you avoid eating small things that could get stuck between your teeth (like corn kernels), because they are horrible to get out.

All they really feel like is an extra set of teeth. If the wires or brackets are poking the inside of your mouth, let the ortho know and they'll probably adjust it for you.

If one of your brackets (the square things that are glued to your teeth) comes loose in the first week, it's ok. Your teeth aren't used to being pulled tight and they will fight back if they can.

If you wanna keep your teeth clean, they will give you a special brush that has a V shaped cut out of it to get behind your brackets. It's VERY important that you floss, too.

Well, that's the basics. If you have another question, pm me.

When I read this,I thought(hey,I have braces, maybe I can help) but nope. But ill still share my experience.I've had mine for like 4-6 months.Yeah I have a terrible sense of time and terrible memory. As far as I remember it didn't hurt that much but I don't remember if you will be sore or not.Ok as a matter of fact dis-regard everything I have said,I BARELY remember what it felt like to get my braces.BUT in all,I'm sure you'll be fine!

One thing will happen for sure

1. You will hate how it feels and it will hurt/irritate you

Following that, two things can happen...

1. You hate the feeling so much, you can't eat anything besides soft things

or..

2. You want the pain to go away so you eat as much as you can to get used to the pain.

After that, every monthly visit gets you use to it and you won't whine like a little baby anymore.

Uh-oh. That's bad for me, since I eat everything in sight.

The problem is in my bottom teeth.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get braces in the upper teeth.
