PROLOGUE:

A SECOND CHANCE

INT. TOKYO-MORNING

(A fourteen year old boy is walking down the street, on his way to school. Headphones strapped over his head and a duffle bag at his side. He has long dark hair and a black eye. His headphones are playing Heavy Metal at the highest volume setting. He is looking down at the ground as he walks forward, not paying attention to the world around him. He doesn’t want to be a part of this world and has therefore escaped into his own fantasy. Earlier that morning he woke up for school, just like any other day.)

INT. THE BOY’S ROOM

(The boy sits up from his bed and shuts off his annoying alarm. He rubs his eyes and then walks out of his room and goes into the bathroom. He eventually finishes getting ready and leaves the bathroom, going to his room to get changed. His little brother, who is 7 years old walks into the bathroom, behind him, still half asleep.)

Little brother: Good morning, Yoshiro!

Yoshiro: Morning, Jiro.

(Yoshiro ruffles Jiro’s hair, as he walks by. Yoshiro walks into his room and gets dressed in his school uniform. He gathers up his text books and puts them into his duffle bag. He hears yelling, outside his room and hurries out to see what could be wrong. Much to his anger he sees his father yelling at his little brother, as usual. His father is holding, his brother’s report card.)

Father: Jiro, you need to get your grades up! You don’t have a single A and most of your grades are D’s and C’s!

Jiro: I’m trying, but I don’t understand it! You won’t help me!

Father: Don’t talk back, Jiro! This is your own fault! Don’t blame others for your shortcomings! Maybe, if you spent less time playing with those stupid dolls and more time studying, you would do better!

(Tears pour out of Jiro’s eyes.)

Father: Knock it off!

(Yoshiro grabs his dad’s shoulder and turns him around.)

Yoshiro: Dad, stop, he’s trying. Maybe, if you’d help him, once in a while…

Father: Was I talking to you, Yoshiro? This conversation had nothing to do with you.

Yoshiro: Dad, you’re making him cry! He’s only seven!

(Suddenly, Yoshiro falls to the ground, feeling the pain of his father’s fist against his eye.)

Father: Get up and get to school, now.

(Jiro tries to hold back his tears, as Yoshiro gets up and, angrily, walks past his father. You’d think he would’ve known better than to talk back to his father, as this was not the first time his father had hit him. But, he cares far too much for his brother and didn’t think about his well-being at the time. As he walks down stairs he sees many empty beer bottles, lying around to his dad’s favorite chair. Tears fill up the bottom of his eyes, but he rubs his eyes and exits his house. He pulls his CD player out of his duffle bag and puts on his headphones. He makes his way down the street, hoping that his brother doesn’t suffer the same punishment he had to endure. Suddenly, on the nearby bridge above him, a group of thugs begin a small gang war.)

Thug: I’ll teach you to mess with me, you son of a bitch!

(The thugs pull out guns and begin firing at one another. They run across the bridge and make their way down to the streets, Yoshiro is walking along. Yoshiro notices none of this, over his headphones. One of the thugs runs up behind Yoshiro, as another thug is chasing after him, firing at him. He quickly dives to the side and a stray bullet pierces the back of Yoshiro’s skull. The bullet passes through the other side and he falls forward, dying. The thugs continue on, as if nothing had happened. Just before blacking out Yoshiro pictures his brother, the one person he had to live for.)

CHAPTER 1:

INT. LOCAL GRAVEYARD-AFTERNOON-13 years later

(Two young men are standing in front of two graves. The graves read: Yoshiro Shinto and Taro Shinto. One of the young men is crying, as he sets down flowers at the grave of Yoshiro Shinto. He rubs his eyes and his friend put his hand on his shoulder.)

Friend: I’m sorry, Jiro.

Jiro: Thank you for coming with me. I haven’t had many friends, since my brother died. I’ve been pretty depressed ever since.

Friend: I understand. I lost my brother a long time ago, too.

Jiro: I’m sorry to hear that. I know how you feel.

Friend: It’s cool, for the most part I’ve moved on. I’ll help you move on, too.

Jiro: Thanks. I’ll try not to be a burden on you, though.

Friend: It’s no problem, at all! That’s what friends are for!

(Jiro and his friend leave the graves and begin walking down the sidewalk. It starts to rain, so they put up their hoods, continuing to walk.)

Jiro: Pretty gloomy day, huh.

Friend: Yeah, hope it’s not like this all day. Luckily, we’ll be stuck in class, anyway.

INT. HELL-13 years ago

(Yoshiro is lying on the ground, with his intestines and internal organs lying all around him. His heart is lying on his, torn open, chest, with blood stained on his entire body. Despite all of this, he still appears to be breathing, with a glazed look in his eyes. His bones are protruding from multiple points of his body and he appears to be unable to move. A horrific demon is standing over him, with a variety of weapons lying about. He is lying in an open area, surrounded by a pit of lava. Other souls are being tortured nearby, with no hope for rest. Suddenly, Yoshiro appears to be fine. His organs and intestines are gone. His chest is, once again, intact and his blood is gone. He looks around, confused. The nearby demon smiles and then picks up a large hammer. He drops it on Yoshiro’s chest. Yoshiro screams out in pain, but unfortunately, his cries fall on deaf ears.)

Yoshiro(narration): I thought my life couldn’t get any worse. Well, it couldn’t. Not until I died, at least. When I died, I was sent to Hell, because in life I had decided that I was an atheist. I just didn’t believe in a God, that would put my brother and I through everything, we went through. Well, I guess I was wrong. He does exist and he let us suffer through that, anyway. My mom was raped and murdered 5 years ago. My brother was too young to remember her, but I still remember her, so vividly. She was beautiful and so kind. I couldn’t imagine anyone so perfect. But, in the end she wasn’t perfect. She was still just a fragile human, someone that could die just as easily as the rest of us. After that, I gave up on believing in anything. My father took a different approach. He decided that drinking was the answer. Every day, he gave my brother and me another reason to hate him. Even, though we needed, him he wasn’t there for us. But, I guess that doesn’t matter now. The only thing that matters is that my body is being broken, second after second, and there is no relief. I can’t die; my body only restores itself, almost instantaneously.

(The demon continues to brutally beat Yoshiro, tearing his limbs off, one-by-one. Yet, after ripping them off, they reappear on his body, as if nothing had happened.)

Yoshiro: Just f***ing kill me! I can’t take it, anymore!

Demon: You’d better toughen up, boy. You’ve only been here for a couple days. You’ve got the rest of eternity, to deal with this.

(The demon picks up a nearby sword and slits Yoshiro’s throat. He decapitates him and then picks up his head flinging it into the lava. Yoshiro’s head reappears on his body and the demon continues the brutal assault, stabbing him and breaking his bones, over and over.)

INT. HELL-2 years later

(Yoshiro is still being tortured, although is now a bit older and appears to be more accustomed to the pain. He almost seems, lifeless, although his fingers still twitch, confirming he is still alive. He looks to his side, seeing that a demon is dragging in a new soul. He takes a closer look and realizes that it is his father.)

Taro: No, please! NO! I don’t want to die!

Demon: Hehehehehe! Don’t worry you won’t die.

(The demon begins the brutal torture, easily breaking Taro. Taro cries out, in pain. Yoshiro manages to smile, ever so slightly.)

Yoshiro: Good, Jiro’s safe.

As soon I read "HELL" I began to listen to Despair from the TWEWY soundtrack. And when the narration began, i started Amnesia. I thought they set a good enough tone for what I just read. I really can't wait for the next chapter!

CHAPTER 2:

INT. HELL-5 years later

(Yoshiro is still being beaten senseless. He is now 21 years old and his hair has grown longer and started to gray, slightly, from all of the torture and stress. He has begun to grow a thin grayish-black beard, as well. A demon walks up from behind the other demon.)

Demon: Joe, it’s time for your break.

Joe: Finally! I was getting pretty tired.

(Joe walks off and the new demon picks up a nearby flamethrower.)

Demon: Hey, Yoshiro.

Yoshiro: Hey, Dave.

(Dave releases the flame and begins burning Yoshiro’s legs. Yoshiro winces, a bit, but has become far to use to the pain.)

Dave: You doing alright, today?

Yoshiro: Not so much.

Dave: What’s wrong?

Yoshiro: You’re kind of hurting me, Dave.

Dave: Oh yeah, sorry.

Yoshiro: Its fine, I know it’s your job.

Dave: …Hey, do you mind telling me one of your stories? They’re really interesting!

Yoshiro: Alright, I’ll tell you one. It’ll help pass the time.

INT. YOSHIRO’S HOME-MORNING-9 years ago

(Yoshiro and Taro are putting up decorations in their backyard. At the time Yoshiro and Jiro are twelve and five, respectively.)

Yoshiro(narration): Nine years ago, my father and I were getting ready for my little brother’s fifth birthday. He was so excited.

(Jiro runs out of the house and into the backyard, wearing a big smile on his face.)

Jiro: Is it almost ready?! My friends are going to be here, any second!

Taro: We’re almost finished, buddy!

Yoshiro(narration): He wasn’t the only one who was excited. For once, in a long time, dad wasn’t drunk. He actually seemed to be trying, for Jiro’s sake. Things were finally starting to look up, since mom had died. But, then… he ruined it.

(All of the kids have finally arrived, for Jiro’s party and are all playing, having fun. Yoshiro is sitting at a table, in the backyard, smiling. He looks over at his father, who is chatting with one of the children’s, attractive, mother. Taro appears to be quite giddy, obviously flirting with the lady. Yoshiro’s smile fades, as he sees Jiro tugging at his father’s pants.)

Jiro: Daddy, will you please play tag with us?

Taro: Jiro, go play, it’s not polite to interrupt someone while they’re talking.

Jiro: But, dad! I want you to play with me!

Taro: Excuse me, for just a moment.

(Taro puts his hand on Jiro’s back and escorts him, into the house. Yoshiro watches the two of them as they go in the house. He quickly peers through the window to make sure everything is alright. He sees his father yelling, at Jiro, but cannot make out what he is saying. Jiro starts to cry and Taro smacks him in the side of the head. Taro points his finger at Jiro’s face and continues to yell. Yoshiro watches his father yell at Jiro, unable to do anything about it. Soon, Jiro walks out of the house and Taro walks out, following close behind. Taro immediately returns to chatting with the mother. Jiro sits down in the corner of the backyard, sulking. Yoshiro gets up and walks over to Jiro, sitting down next to him. At first he says nothing and merely puts his arm around Jiro, comforting him.)

Jiro: Why doesn’t dad want to play with me?

Yoshiro: It’s not that he doesn’t want to play with you; he’s just tired and just wants to relax.

Jiro: He seems fine playing with that lady. Why does he want to play with her, instead of me?

Yoshiro: Don’t let it get to you, buddy. Just go and play with your friends. It’s your birthday, you should have fun! I’ll even play with you and your friends, if you want.

(Jiro’s face lights up, with excitement.)

Jiro: Okay!

(Jiro quickly gets up and runs over to his friends, Yoshiro stands up and starts walking toward the other kids. On his way over, he looks over at his father who is still chatting with the same lady.)

INT. YOSHIRO’S HOME-NIGHT

(Yoshiro walks down stairs, late at night, to see his father sitting in the living room. His father is sleeping on the chair, with empty beer bottles, lying all around. Yoshiro walks over to see that his father’s cheeks are stained with tears and a picture of his mother is lying on his lap. Yoshiro grabs a nearby blanket and puts it over his father. He, quietly, goes back up the stairs, returning to bedroom.)

INT. HELL-Present

(Dave is now gouging Yoshiro’s eyes out.)

Dave: So, why did you give your dad the blanket after what he did to your brother?

Yoshiro: He’s still my dad. Deep down I know he cares. But, damn if he didn’t have a lot of trouble showing it. Besides, he got worse over the next two years before I died. I’ve definitely lost a lot of sympathy for him.

Dave: I’m sorry to hear that, man. If it makes you feel any better, tomorrow’s shift I torture him. I’ll make sure he’s in a lot of pain.

Yoshiro: Thanks, Dave.

Dave: You know, I don’t understand?

(Dave starts hacking away Yoshiro’s stomach.)

Dave: You seem like such a nice guy. How’d you end up down here? Why didn’t you go to Heaven?

Yoshiro: In life I didn’t believe in God. I was an atheist.

(Dave stops torturing Yoshiro.)

Dave: That’s it? That’s the only reason you ended up here?

Yoshiro: That’s what they told me.

(Joe walks up behind Dave.)

Joe: I’m back.

(Dave turns around and looks at Joe, he slowly steps out of the way and looks back at Yoshiro. Joe picks up a chainsaw and turns it on. He begins to rip apart, Yoshiro’s chest. Dave stares at Yoshiro, dumbfounded that he is being tortured, for such a miniscule reason.)

CHAPTER 3:

INT. HELL-8 years later

(Yoshiro’s hair is now completely gray, while his face and body have retained a youthful appearance. He has become far more fit and muscular, from the consistent torture his body has endured. Dave is once again torturing him. He stabs Yoshiro in the lungs with a knife, multiple times. On the last stab he leaves the knife in Yoshiro’s chest. Yoshiro’s chest alternates between regenerating and being sliced open. Dave cuts Yoshiro’s leg off with a saw. He then beats Yoshiro’s face with his own leg, while his chest and lungs continue to heal. Eventually, the leg disappears from Dave’s hand and Yoshiro’s leg heals. Dave picks up the knife and hacks apart his chest.)

Dave: Yoshiro.

Yoshiro: Yeah, Dave.

Dave: I’m going to help you.

Yoshiro: Help me do what?

Dave: I’m going to help you return to Earth.

(Yoshiro’s face is overcome with surprise.)

Dave: Just follow my directions, exactly as I tell you.

Yoshiro: Dave, wait. What are you talking about? Why would you help me?

Dave: Yoshiro, you don’t deserve this. All because you didn’t believe something! Who would have believed in him in your situation? You were only a kid! Your whole life was taken from you, right before your eyes. I want you to go back to Earth and live out your life, happily. The way you should have. I’m just sorry that I couldn’t help you sooner. Now listen to me. I’m only going to have time to say this once…

INT. HELL

(Dave is blasting Yoshiro with a barrage of bullets from an AK-47. He puts down the gun and wipes his forehead, acting like he’s tired. In this time, Yoshiro recovers and quickly gets up. He extends his arm and knocks Dave away with a fireball, created with his bare hand. All of the demons look away from the souls they are torturing, wondering what is going on. Yoshiro flexes and his entire body becomes consumed by flames. Dave gets up and smiles. He quickly changes his expression to anger, in fear of blowing their cover. The flames around Yoshiro’s body expand, knocking Dave away and keeping the demons from getting near him. Yoshiro rushes across the bridge on the other end of the island. He looks back at Dave.)

Yoshiro: Thank you, Dave. I only hope they don’t realize what you did.

(Demons chase after Yoshiro, attempting to capture him. Some of the demons rush in from the other side of the bridge. Yoshiro punches the bridge, releasing the flames and igniting the bridge. He leaps into the sky, as his feet catch on fire. The fires on his feet act as rockets and allow him to ascend to incredible heights. Many of the demons fall into the lava pit below the bridge. Some of them are lucky enough to scramble back to the opposite ends of the bridge and make it safely to land. However, the luckiest of them all, happens to be Yoshiro who is already making his way into the vortex high above them. This vortex will take him directly to Earth, where he may finally be able to live his life out in peace. Some of the demons hurry over to help Dave up.)

Dave: Dammit! That son of a b**** got a hold of the Fire Tear!

Demon: Someone alert Lord Satan!

INT. HELL’S PALACE

Satan: HOW DID ONE OF THE SOUL’S GET THEIR HANDS ON THE FIRE TEAR?!

(Satan is a massive hideous demon shrouded in darkness. The only things the demons can see are two glowing green eyes piercing the dark side of the throne room.)

Demon: We’re not sure, sire! We’re currently looking into it!

Satan: LOOKING INTO IT?! ARE YOU THAT STUPID?! WHAT’S THERE TO LOOK INTO?! IT’S NOT LIKE WE KEEP SECURITY CAMERA’S AROUND HERE, MORON!

INT. VORTEX

(Yoshiro is ascending through the vortex, making his way toward Earth.

Yoshiro(narration): Dave stole some important artifact from his leader. He said that if you swallow it, it will grant you the ability to create and control fire. Well, it looks like it worked. He brought it with him today and in the middle of torturing me, he fed it to me, without letting anyone see. He told me that in order to use it your body had to be tough enough to handle it. That’s why he didn’t help me out sooner. I guess the details don’t really matter. All that matters to me is that Dave just risked a lot for me. He was a good friend and I can’t wait to see him again, when I die.

(Yoshiro finally reaches the top of the vortex and appears on top of a large building in Tokyo. He takes a deep breath, sucking in the fresh air.)

Yoshiro: Fresh air! It’s been so long! I never thought I’d be so happy just to be alive.

CHAPTER 4:

(Yoshiro releases his breath and stares out at Tokyo.)

Yoshiro: Not much seems to have changed. The buildings are a bit nicer.

(Yoshiro turns around and leaves the roof, entering the inside of the skyscraper, through the open door. He hurries down the stairs and quickly rounds the corner, nearly bumping into a man making his way up the stairs. Yoshiro jumps back, startled.)

Yoshiro: Whoa! Sorry, buddy!

(The man ignores him and continues up the stairs.)

Yoshiro: What a dick…

(Yoshiro puts his hands in his pocket and continues down the stairs. He reaches the bottom of the stairs and tries to grab the door handle, but his hand passes right through it. He yanks his hand away, freaked out.)

Yoshiro: What the f***?!

(Yoshiro slowly reaches for the handle and tries to grab it. His hand closes, but he cannot grasp the handle. He stands there for a moment and then tries to step through the door. He phases right through the door, entering the lobby of the building. He looks around, as all of the people just walk right by him. He stumbles around, confused. He instinctively wraps his arm around his chest in an attempt to hide that he isn’t wearing a shirt. He looks around and sees that no one seems to notice him. He puts his hands down and wanders out the door. He hears a bunch of people scream, so he wanders over to see what’s wrong. A group of people have gathered and are pointing at the roof of the building that Yoshiro just exited. The man that Yoshiro passed on his way down is standing at the edge.)

Yoshiro: Holy shit is he gonna jump?!

(The man takes a deep breath and then steps forward, plunging to his death. Some people let out a terrified scream. Yoshiro bolts into the air, leaving behind a trail of fire. He glides to the man’s falling position, but the man passes through his hands and smashes against the pavement. Yoshiro turns around and sees that the people are now freaking out over the fire that he created. Yoshiro lands on the ground, as the people crowd around the body. Some of them vomit and some of them begin calling for help. The others back away from the mysterious fire that has appeared. The fire-fighters, paramedics, and officers soon show up. The officers create a barrier, blocking off citizens and the fire-fighters put out the fire. The paramedics gather up the remains of the suicidal man. Yoshiro watches around him, as no one seems to notice that he just flew. Yet, everyone sees the fire that he has created. He creates a ball of fire in the palm of his hand and admires it.)

Random pedestrian: What the hell is going on?!

(The pedestrian falls backwards, surprised by the appearance of a floating fire. Yoshiro quickly puts it out, much to the surprise of everyone around. He flies away, leaving the people to their imaginations. He lands on the roof of a nearby skyscraper and sits down, taking everything in.)

Yoshiro: So, nobody can see me, but they can see the fire that I create? That’s odd. This is too much to take in all at once! I need to figure out what to do next…

(Yoshiro looks around and sees his house in the distance. He smiles and leaps into the air, gliding toward the house.)

EXT. YOSHIRO’S HOUSE

(Yoshiro lands outside and looks at his previous house. However, it is now but a former shell of its previous self. The roof has plenty of holes in it, the door is hanging wide open, the mailbox is in pieces, and the shattered remains of the windows lie on the lawn. Yoshiro looks at the house and finds himself missing his old life.)

Yoshiro: A lot can change in 13 years, I suppose.

(He enters the house and looks around. He sees that the empty beer bottles still plague the living room floor and chair. The walls have been torn down and the electricity turned off. Yoshiro hears a noise come from upstairs. He hurries up the stairs and enters his room. Dave is sitting on his bed, reading his old Soul Eater manga.)

Dave: Hahaha! This shit’s hilarious!

CHAPTER 5:

Yoshiro: Dave! What the hell are you doing here?!

Dave: Oh hey, buddy!

(Dave puts the manga down and stands up.)

Yoshiro: You’re not in trouble?

Dave: If they find out it was me, I am. But, they don’t know. Hopefully they won’t find out.

Yoshiro: Well then you need to get back there! You can’t give them any reason to suspect you!

Dave: Calm down, buddy! It’s all good, there are so many demons down there that they won’t even notice I’m gone.

Yoshiro: You sure?

Dave: I’m positive.

Yoshiro: Good. But, what do I do now?

Dave: That’s up to you. You’re a free man, now!

Yoshiro: But, nobody can even see me!

Dave: That’s because you’re just a soul. But, not to worry! I’ve got just the thing!

(Dave pulls a small device out of his pocket. He tosses it to Yoshiro, who barely catches it.)

Yoshiro: What is it?

Dave: It’ll be quite helpful to someone like you. It creates a fake body for you to enter. You can make any sort of body you want. Even a woman! Then just enter the body and people will be able to see you. You can leave the body, just as easy as you can enter it, too. But, when you leave the body it will just sit where you leave it. You’ll have to use the device to erase it from existence.

Yoshiro: It sounds interesting. But, where do I go from here?

Dave: Anywhere you want!

Yoshiro: Yeah, but it’s been 13 years. I’m sure that times have changed. I don’t even have a clue what to do now that I have my life back.

Dave: Well, it shouldn’t be too hard. You don’t need food, or sleep, or a shower. So, therefore, you don’t need a job. You can just make a body and do whatever you want. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you could get rid of the body and make a new one. Start over. But, I’d better warn you that the other demons will come after you. It’s best that you stay in one of those bodies as often as possible. It’ll be harder for them to find you if they can’t recognize you. But, that doesn’t mean that it’ll be impossible for them to find you. They can still track you, no matter what you do. Just be careful, you hear?

Yoshiro: Of course. There’s no way I’m going back there, without a fight.

Dave: Alright, before you go, I’m going to explain a few more things that will benefit you. For instance, when the demons come after you, they will be wearing special gauntlets that will send you back to Hell. As you know, you can no longer die and therefore these gloves will be the only way that they can return you to Hell. The gloves have a green gem on the palm. If this gem is held against any part of your soul for more than 5 seconds, then you will be sent back to Hell. Luckily, you have the Fire Tear to aid you in battle. But, just as you cannot die, neither can they. They will regenerate just as you do and keep coming after you. If even one of them finds you, you’ll have to escape by any means possible. You also will not be able to use the Fire Tear if you are wearing one of the fake bodies. The Fire Tear can only be activated by a soul. The human body restricts its capabilities. Unfortunately, I cannot run the risk of bringing you any weapons from Hell. It may allow them to find out that I am helping you.

Yoshiro: It’s alright, Dave. You’ve already helped me enough. I appreciate everything you’ve done.

Dave: My pleasure. Now get out there and live your life.

(Yoshiro takes a deep breath and leaves the room. Dave follows him out of the house.)

Dave: I hope I never have to see you again, Yoshiro.

Yoshiro: I hope so, too.

(Dave smiles and walks away.)

INT. GAS STATION

(Yoshiro walks through the wall of a gas station and into the restroom. He pulls out the device that Dave gave him and looks it over. He presses the “ON” button and a hologram shoots out of the small screen. The hologram is a menu. The on-screen display asks male or female. He clicks male. He cycles through the many choices and creates a body. He clicks the “CREATE” button and the device levitates out of his hand. He steps back, confused. The device shoots a body out of the screen. The body expands to the size of a normal human being. Yoshiro smiles at the skinny, black-haired, man wearing glasses. It appears to be a 20 year old man. He squats down and phases into the body.
