Edge of Fate

Chapter One: Shadows of the Past, Visions of the Future

It is a quiet day in the small town of Vetara. The wind slowly passes through the trees, the water currents slowly move through the seemingly endless river, and the sun slowly sets upon the horizon. A young girl stands near the riverbank staring at the sunset, as if the sun holds all the answers to all the questions of the world. But the sun is as silent as herself, and she often wonders if she can do anything to change the world. And why wouldn’t she, considering the sorry state the world is in? Sickness, war, economic crisis, and crime, so many horrible things that are happening, and she thinks to herself of how lucky she is that she isn’t embroiled in any conflicts. But still, she wonders what the world will come to if it continues its slow descent into insanity.

“Kiara! Hey sis, where are you!?”, a young boy shouts. The girl looks back and sees her little brother running towards her. “Tyro, what is it?”, she says with a smirk on her face. Tyro looks at her and takes a deep breath. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Mom says that dinner is ready. Oh, and by the way, I wanted to give you this, I’ve been working on it all week! I wanted to give it to you for your birthday tomorrow, but I was so anxious to give it to you, I just had to do it now!”, he says with excitement as he hands her a necklace with a silver moon on it. “Aww, thanks Tyro, I really appreciate it. I’ll always keep this necklace with me. Come on, let’s go home.”, she says with a smile on her face. They make their way through town until they climb up a small hill and reach their house.

“Mom, Kiara’s home! Let’s eat already!”, Tyro says as he blazes past his sister and makes his way to the dining room. “Hello there, dear, how was your day?”, says their mother while serving dinner. “Nothing to talk about, just the usual crap… The only good thing that’s happened to me today is that Tyro gave me a beautiful necklace.”, Kiara says with a smile but with a rather distant tone. She sits down at the table while looking at her plate. Her mother stares at her and then turns her attention to Tyro. “Sweety, that was a very sweet thing you did for your sister. Well kids, I made your favorite dinner: Steak and Mashed Potatoes with French Fries.”, she says in her always happy tone. Tyro eagerly looks at his plate and breathes in the fragrance of the food. “Mmm, yum! Thanks Mom!”, he says as he quickly starts eating. Kiara slowly eats her dinner, savoring every bite, and after taking her last bite, she stands up and goes straight upstairs without saying a word. “Tyro, do you know what’s wrong with your sister?”, their mother asks with a worried face. Tyro looks at her mother and pats her head. “Well Mom, I don’t know what’s on her mind, but give her some time and space, and she should come around.” She looks at him with a surprised look on her face. “Hehe, I didn’t know my little Tyro could be so analytical of a situation”, she says smiling as she stands up to wash the dishes.

Meanwhile, Kiara just lies motionless on her bed, staring at the ceiling, and trying to fall into a deep sleep. Seconds, minutes, and hours pass and it’s as though time stands still for her. “Why do I feel like this?”, she says to herself as she starts closing her eyes. Then suddenly, her mom knocks on the door. “Can I come in?”, she says with a polite voice. “Yeah, come in…”, Kiara says sitting on the bed now concentrating her gaze to the floor. Her mom opens the door and slowly walks towards her bed until she sits down. “Honey, I can notice something’s wrong. You were awfully quite at dinner, and you seem so distant recently. What’s wrong?”, she says in a comforting voice. Kiara just keeps staring down at the floor and stays silent for a few seconds. “Mom, why do I feel like something terrible is going to happen? I mean, look at how the world is. It’s already messed up enough as it is, but I get the feeling something even more horrible awaits. It’s a strange feeling, and I just don’t know what to do…”, she says in a soft voice while she rubs her hands. Her mom looks at her shocked for a few moments and then she says: “Sweety, are you feeling like this because you’re having your period?” Kiara opens her eyes wide and directs her gaze to her mother. “Mom, no! What the hell!? I already know how to deal with my period!!! This is different!!!”, she says blushing really red. Her mom laughs and holds her daughter’s hand. “Look honey, you’re probably feeling like this because you’re struggling to find your place in the world, searching for your own identity, so to speak. Everyone feels like that sometimes. And well honey, it’s true, the world is very messed up, but it’s people like us that can make the difference, we can alter the fate of the world. It’s up to us to make our own decisions, and we either make the world a better place, or we make it a living hell”, she says while looking at her.

Kiara looks at her mother and smiles. “Thanks Mom, you always know what to say”, she says hugging her. “I’m glad I’m able to help. Well, it’s time I hit the hay, so have a good night sweety. Tomorrow is your birthday! So enjoy your last night as a 15 year old”, her mom says to her. “Hmph, good night Mom, sleep tight”, Kiara says with a smirk as she lays back on the bed. She stares at the ceiling once more, and sighs. She looks at the clock and yawns. “I feel so sleepy and it’s just 11:30pm…then again, a good night’s rest is just what I need. Maybe a good night’s sleep will make me feel better.”, she thinks to herself as she slowly falls asleep. Suddenly, the clock falls down to the floor and the entire room starts shaking. “Wh—What’s happening!? Damn it, an earthquake!?”, she screams falling down to the floor. When she stands up, she begins to sink, as if through some type of dark portal. She tries to fight back as the darkness starts consuming her body. “No, what is this!? What the hell is happening!?”, she says as she struggles to breath. But as she desperately fights to stay alive, she is suddenly knocked out cold.

“Uhhhhh, where am I?”, Kiara says as she slowly awakens from her unconsciousness. “How long have I been out? Wh-what is this? Darkness? I can’t see a damn thing! Tyro, if this is some kind of trick, I’m not laughing!”, she says angrily. But just as she’s about to say another word, a cloaked figure with an enormous scythe appears before her. His intimidating presence chills Kiara’s spine, and suddenly, she feels very cold. “So, you are finally ready…”, the cloaked figure says while pointing his scythe to Kiara. “What do you mean? I don’t understand. Who are you? And what is this place?”, she says feeling colder by the second. The cloaked figure approaches her slowly and walks in circles around her. “I am Death, the Dark Angel of Justice, and the Keeper of the Dead. And as for where you are, you are neither in the world of the living or the world of the dead. You are in between life and death.”, he says with an intimidating voice. Kiara suddenly feels shocked. “You—You’re Death!? What in blazes!? What a damn nightmare I’m having!”, she says now slowly backing away from Death. “This is no nightmare, nor is it a dream, what you are feeling now is real. Your uncertainty and your doubts summoned me. I am here to provide the truth. ”, he says.

“Truth? What truth?”, she says cautiously approaching Death. “The truth about the conflict that you have been too blind to see. You say the world is ravaged. And yes, it is. War and disease plague it, and the world seems worse with each passing day. But what you are not aware of is that this is something bigger than what you simply believe. For you see, a war has been waged long before you were born, between the light and the darkness. This war has taken many incarnations, from the primal and medieval wars to the more modern wars that you see in the present.”, he says while looking at Kiara. “But what does this have to do with me!?”, she says. Death looks at her and simply nods. “ You are the vital link, the key, the means of escape from this world falling into darkness. You will gain unimaginable strength in time, you will not know when and you will not know why, but your light should lead the way. Lead this world with light, and it will not fall. But if you let it descend into insanity, the world as you know it will cease to be”, he says now laying one of his fingers on Kiara’s forehead.

Almost immediately, Kiara starts to have visions, terrible things happening, darkness taking root on the world, but also a small light, a glimmer of hope. “I—I can see into the future. So many outcomes and so many possibilities. I don’t understand.”, she says as she stares in disbelief as she sees a vision in which her family is killed. Death looks at her and touches her necklace. “You will understand, in time. Now with the power I am bestowing upon you, when you are in dire need, search for your inner light in the deepest darkness, and I shall come to assist you. Remember, there cannot be light without darkness”, he says as he slowly fades into nothingness. Kiara then falls into unconsciousness once more, and after a while, wakes up lying on the floor.

She looks all over the room to make sure that she’s really awake. “Was it all a dream? No… it wasn’t a dream… I can feel his strength...”, she says as she touches her necklace.

Next: Kiara is shocked by the strange events that have happened, and she starts to feel even more uncertain. What will happen next? What will Kiara encounter, and what lies ahead for the world? Stay tuned for Chapter Two: Uncertainty…

Chapter Two: Uncertainty

Kiara slowly stands up and doesn’t know what to do. After what she just witnessed, everything has drastically changed. She’s still not sure if she is in reality or if she is still unconscious. She feels dizzy and weak, and so she makes her way to her bed and lies down. Slowly her strength returns to her. “I-I’m not in that strange place anymore. But it was so bizarre. I saw Death with my own eyes, he said I was between life and death… could I have been that close to dying? Well, at least I know that I’m still alive, and that everything’s back to normal.”, she says now fully aware of her surroundings. She looks at the clock and sees that it is already 2:30am. “Huh, looks like I’m already 16.”, she thinks to herself. And after that, she finally falls into a deep sleep.
It seems as though the night is eternal for her, and she finds comfort in her long and peaceful sleep. Then, the next morning, Tyro bursts the door wide open and shouts: “Happy Birthday sis!” Kiara screams and falls to the floor. “Hey, you could have killed me you twerp! Oww, this is the second time I fall to the floor.”, she says in pain. “Second time? Haha, you must have been sleepwalking last night.”, says Tyro while chuckling. “Anyways, mom says for you to go downstairs.” Kiara stares at him for a few seconds and then stands up. “Okay, I’ll be down in a sec. And next time, knock on the door before you come to my room! I mean seriously, what if one of these days you burst open the door and you see me naked!?”, she says. “Ewwww, I wouldn’t want to see that, it would be so nasty!”, says a panicking Tyro as he runs down the stairs. Kiara simply smirks and then cleans up her room. “After last night’s mess, I should make sure my room is all cleaned up”, she thinks to herself. After cleaning her room she changes her clothes and then she looks at her mirror and notices that the silver moon on her necklace is now black. “Huh? Why did my necklace’s color changed? Ah, never mind, I have a busy day ahead of me, I don’t need these distractions.”, she says quietly and goes downstairs to the living room.
When she goes down, she is greeted by her mother. “Happy Birthday sweety!”, she says as she hugs Kiara. “Hehe, thanks Mom”, Kiara says smiling. “Look honey, I have a present for you.”, her mom says as she hands her a silver coin. “That coin belonged to your grandmother, it’s a family heirloom that’s been passed down from generation to generation. I want to pass it on to you.”,she says with a smile on her face. “Aww, thanks Mom, this means a lot.”, Kiara says hugging her mother happily. Then Kiara’s mother smiles once more and says: “Oh and sweety, I also got you three black thongs!” Kiara blushes extremely red and says: “Mom, seriously, couldn’t you have just put them on my bed!? People could be hearing you right now!!!” Her mother starts laughing so much and nods. “Hehe, that’s my girl!”, she says. Kiara quickly grabs her backpack while still blushing and opens the door. “Wait sweety, aren’t you going to eat breakfast before you go?”, her mother asks. “No, it’s okay Mom, I’m not hungry, I’ll just eat lunch at school.”, she says. “Well, okay sweety, if you say so. Have a nice day and be careful!”, her mother says. “Okay Mom, I will. I love you, bye!”
She walks through town until she arrives at her school. “Sigh, just another day at SaberGale High School.”, she says as she makes her way to her locker room. She tries to get her mind off of the strange events that happened to her last night, but she doesn’t find anything else to think of besides that. “I wonder what Death meant when he said I’m the vital link? I couldn’t possibly be able to do anything to change the world no matter how much I would want to. I just-don’t know what to do…”, she thinks to herself while walking to her classroom. She tries to do her best to pay attention to her professors, but as the day passes, she draws ever more distant from everyone else. The hours pass, and the day seems to be eternal. Soon the time for lunch draws near, and Kiara simply sits in a desk at the far side of the classroom, waiting to get out. “Ms. Shinaru! Would you care to tell me what are the particles that compose H2O?”, professor Stillman says. Kiara is quickly caught off guard and gasps. “Um, uh, two particles of Hydrogen, and one particle of Oxigen!”, she says. “Very good.”, says the professor. Suddenly the bell rings and everyone exits the classroom. “Excuse me, Ms. Shinaru, I need to have a word with you.” Kiara stops dead in her tracks and slowly turns around. “Um, yes professor Stillman?”, she says with a nervous tone. He looks at her and then crosses his arms. “You’ve been rather distant lately, you almost don’t pay attention to class, and your grades are this close to declining. You’re one of my best students, and it would be a pity if you don’t pass my class.”, he says in a disappointing tone. “Yes, I understand professor Stillman, I’ll be sure to pay extra attention.”, she says as she storms off the classroom.
Professor Stillman simply stands there and soon after sits on his desk. “Could she have been…. No, it’s not possible… Only time will tell.”, the professor thinks to himself and then goes back to work.
After getting out of the classroom, Kiara goes straight to the lunch room and eats a Hamburger with Fries and some Soda, and then she leaves and goes to the school courtyard. She goes and climbs up her favorite tree and enjoys the breeze. After a long time, she begins to wonder again about what happened the night before. “The vital link, the key? This is all so bizarre to me. A part of me says that I should just ignore these visions, but another part of me says to embrace them? Why is it so hard to choose?”, she thinks to herself as she closes her eyes. Immediately as she closes her eyes, another vision comes to her. “Ahh, what is this? An army? So much destruction, so much Chaos! Innocent people dying, the world being destroyed. Damn it, how can I wake up from this!?”, she says as beams of light start to surround her. Suddenly she feels like she’s falling, and in an instant wakes up and safely lands on the ground. “That was close, a little bit more, and I could’ve broken my bones. Damn it, these visions will kill me one of these days!”, she mumbles to herself when she suddenly feels a strange presence.
Kiara looks around desperately, and feels that she is being watched. She slowly steps away from the courtyard and tries to get inside the school, but then she notices that absolutely no one is around. Then she hears a voice: “Well, well, well. It looks like we’ve finally found you! It’s taken us a hell of a long time, but at least we finally got a beat on you.” Kiara looks back and sees a man in pitch black armor covering all his body except his face, along with six more armored people. “Look, I don’t know who the hell you are, or what you want from me, but I suggest you back off!”, she says holding on to her necklace. The man simply laughs and stares at her. “So, you’re the one we’re supposed to take down. You’re not as intimidating as I thought you would be.”, he says. She looks at him rather confused. “What the hell are you talking about!? I’m just a normal girl!”, she says angrily. The man looks at her with a grin on his face. “Oh really? Then would you care to explain the black moon on your necklace?”, he says. She looks at her necklace and replies: “That’s none of your business you jerk, now back off! The man draws out his double edged lance and points it at her. “No can do. Now then, stay quiet and your death will be less painful.”, he says. He quickly dashes towards her and attacks her. Kiara tries to block the attack but falls to the ground. As the other armored men approach to attack her, a radiant beam of light appears in front of her.
When the light dies down, she sees a young man with a long black cloak and an enormous sword. He seems to be wearing a kind of silver and black armor and his face is concealed by a mask. He simply raises his sword and utters the words: “Divine Judgment, punish!” Just as Kiara is about to get a closer look at him, beams of light appear and suddenly she doesn’t feel the strange presence anymore. When she stands up and looks around, she sees that the school is filled with students. “Wait, everything’s normal? But weren’t these guys here just a second ago? And no one seemed to notice anything…unless… I was the only one who could see those guys…”, she says to herself. “That’s it! I have to find that guy who saved me.”, she says. She makes sure no one is looking, and she climbs over the school fence and runs toward the forest. She doesn’t know if he’s there, but she feels that he’s close. “I have to find him…”
Next: Kiara searches for the man who saved her life and hopes to get answers to all the strange events that have happened to her. Who were those people who were attacking her? Do they know something about her that she doesn’t? Find out in Chapter Three: The Wanderer…

Chapter Three: The Wanderer

Kiara desperately runs through the forest, never looking back and moving forward. All she could think of now was to find the young man who saved her life. “Who could he be?”, she says to herself, as she remembers the moment when that man saved her life. “Divine Judgment, punish!” She thinks about those words he uttered, and the powerful light that eminated from his weapon. “I wonder if he has the answers I’m looking for?”, she thinks to herself while running. Many minutes pass, and she reaches a small river. She gazes upon the distance to see if there’s anything on the other side. “Well, the only way I’ll find out is if I swim over there.”, she says as she enters the river and starts swimming. She keeps swimming until she arrives at the other side of the forest. She looks at the sun and looks at her watch. “Hmm, it’s 1:30pm, I still have time to search the area until the sun goes down.”, she says as she continues exploring the forest.

Meanwhile, in a mysterious wasteland very far away from civilization, the man who tried to kill Kiara lies motionless on the ground, along with his six armored men. He slowly opens his eyes and stands up, feeling very weak. “Ugh, I feel so damn dizzy. Grr, that stupid stranger that sent us all back here really packed a punch. When I get my hands on that bastard, he’ll regret that he was born. And as for Kiara, looks like we’ll have to search for her all over again.”, he mumbles to himself rather angrily. Just as he’s about to say another word, one of his soldiers screams at him. “Commander Shiba, are you alright!?” Shiba jumps up and punches the soldier with all his strength. “Ahhh, damn you! Don’t scream next time! You almost gave me a frickin heart attack!”, Shiba says as he looks at the man. “I’m so sorry Commander, it won’t happen again, promise!”, the soldier says with a rather painful voice. “What are we going to do now?”, another one of the soldiers asks. Shiba looks at his tired men and looks towards the distance. “Hmm, we should probably look for some shelter before the sun sets. Apparently it’ll take us a while to get back to headquarters. If we stay here any longer, we’ll just be free food for the Kiroshi.”, he says as he starts walking towards the north. His men quickly follow him and are alert and cautious not to approach any Kiroshi. “What will we report to the Headmaster?”, says another of Shiba’s soldiers. “I don’t know Kuradora, I have to really think this over…”, Shiba says as they continue walking.

Back at the forest, Kiara continues her search. She reaches a clearing where there are four giant pillars surrounding the remaining forest area. She climbs atop one of the pillars and looks towards the distance. “Well, it looks like this is a dead end…”, she says as she starts climbing down. Just as her feet land on the ground, she feels a presence, not a dangerous one, but not a friendly one either. She is cautious, but at the same time, feels that the presence is familiar. “Show yourself, because if you don’t, I’m not going to pull any punches!”, she says, ready for a fight. And then, in just one blink of an eye, the stranger that saved her life appears right in front of her. He seems calm, cool and collected, and his long black hair waves as the wind blows softly on his face. Kiara stands shocked for a moment and does not know what to say. She doesn’t know if she should run or if she should say something. “Th—thank you!”, she says nervously. The young man simply smiles and directs his gaze upon her. “It was nothing, I sensed that you were in danger, and I had to help. But when I did come to assist you, something about you intrigued me. You are not like normal humans, you have a special aura eminating from you. It is a great power, and one that is rarely found. I also sense Death’s presence in you.”, he says looking towards the distance. Kiara is speechless and then says: “H-how did you know all that!?” The young man simply looks at her again, and then he walks towards one of the pillars to lean his back on. “Simple, you are one of us, hidden among the humans. You weren’t aware of your power until now. For all these years you kept yourself safe by keeping your true power concealed.”, he says.

Kiara looks down at her hands and clenches her fists and then looks at the young man. “Please, I need answers, you have the answers I’m looking for…please help me!”, she says while looking at him. He looks at her, and for a while he stays silent. “What do you want to know?”, he says. “Anything that you can tell me, anything that will help me understand what’s going on now.”, she says. He sits down and starts to explain: “All right, as you already know, you became aware of your true power when you turned 16, that is when Death appeared in your consciousness, to let you know of your powers and of the war that has been waged for countless centuries.” Kiara interrupts abruptly and says: “What war, and how did you know that I saw Death when I turned 16?”, she says with a cautious face. He looks at her for a while and says: “The War of Supremacy. And I know about what happened to you, because for most of us, when we are in our teenage years, our powers are awakened.” Kiara then says: “Ok, so tell me about this War of Supremacy…” The young man looks towards the sky and continues his explanation: “The War of Supremacy is an eternal battle that has been waged since the beginning of time. The war exists for one purpose, to claim control of this world, and to set a balance to all things. Light and Darkness have been the main forces at work in this war, and since the early days of this planet’s existence, battles have been fought to keep this world from being destroyed. The Forces of Darkness wish to extinguish all light and to claim the world as their own, and enslave all of this planet’s inhabitants, in the hopes that they can use this planet as a vessel to conquer countless other universes. And as for the Forces of Light, they wish to bring eternal peace, and they wish to end all suffering and sickness…something that I do not fully believe…” he says as he directs his gaze upon her once more. He stays silent for a few seconds and then says: “You now have a choice, either to join us and save the world, or sit by and watch as thousands and millions of lives are extinguished…” She looks at him for a while and then says: “I- - I don’t know…” she says looking down.

What will happen next, are the intentions of this young man really noble? What will Kiara choose? Find out in Chapter Four: Decision…
