Why do People Try to Prove Video Games are Art by Making Them Seem Like Other, Existing Art?

Why is everybody so quick to compare games to music, movies, comics, books, and such, when it should be trying to define itself on its own merits?

    I see games as the mutant hybrid of books, comics, and TV. I guess people have to compare it to something, plus video games HAVE been around much less then ay others. :/

    The only thing I've ever compared a video game to was Final Fantasy 13 to a movie, never thought about the others though....
