I can see their icons but I don't see them fighting with me. I watched a video of someone fighting him and saw that he got buffs from his dreameater.

I think you're not supposed to have your dream eaters with you..i think

if you are able to use reality shift against him, it will change the battlefield to a land one and you will have your dream eaters.

Although eventually, he will change it back to an air battle. The same trick will work again, if you don't kill him by then.
