I have to admit I am way more of a KH fan than a FF fan, but I have played all of the VII series of games, IX and parts of X but didn't like it. I liked Crisis core most for both gameplay and story, but preferred IX over VII for the same reasons, but predominately story reasons. It is for that reason I am very keen to play FFVIII, learning about Squall and Seifer, and learning about the development Square went through in terms of taking the stories and gameplay on from the legendary VII to my preferred IX.

So my question to you guys is, due to hearing a lot of mixed feedback, what is your opinion of it as it's own game, in relation the the games just before and just after, and if there's anything worth knowing about it before getting it.

Cheers! http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png

I had heard that. Mainly people not liking how he's a moody, melodramatic character that limits the 'fun' in the story... have you MET cloud?! lol

The gameplay is pretty different from the usual FF system, it's new and a break away from the same old but still has that FF feeling. However it can be a bit tricky to understand at first and you'll need a guide or a walkthrough to help you out. FF 8 is that game that awards you for understanding the system. xD

Well, what's new about the fight style? Feel free to spoil that :P Also, I'd probs get the guide anyway to get the most from the game.... that and without the guide that came with my copy of FFVII I probably would never have finished the damn thing. Saying that, I finished FFIX without any help....

The fight style is usual old skool Final Fantasy, expect you have to draw or rather steal magic if you want some from monsters. Say you want 2 lightning spells, you fight the monster that has lightning spells and steal them and then just press the buttons to escape and yeah.

Hmm not sure I like the sound of that too much, but hey I only play FF for story and NEVER for gammeplay, the sole reason I don't replay the damn things! :P

Not many people do. Lol. Haha. But it can become quite addictive. :)

FFVIII was amazing, but the draw system was a bit teadious from time to time and we needed to relie too much on the GF in my opinion, but other than that, the story is great,I like Squall a lot,he's my favorite hero of any FF and it plays like any classic FF game,I had a lot of fun playing it,I even beat that game twice.

Thanks, that helps! Tell me more about the Draw System?

Well,in FFVIII in order to use Magic spells like Firaga or Cure you have to ''steal'' them from the ennemi by using ''Draw'' during a battle and each ennemies have their own magic spell(about 2 or 3) and everytime you use "Draw" you can choose which spell you want from the ennemi. For the most part, the stronger the ennemi the stonger the spells will be and sometimes bosses will possess unique spells that you don't want to miss. And everytime you use "Draw" it only takes a few spells, like if you use "Draw" on a Goblin to draw Cure it will only take a random number between 9 to 0(Yes you can actually miss the draw and the better the spell, the harder it is to draw),I don't know exactly how it works, but to me as far as I remember it was 9 to 0 spells that I was able to draw at the time and for some reasons my Squall always draw more spells than any other character.Anyway now you get why it can be teadious, every time you use "Draw" it only give you about 5 of the spell you draw at the time and you want to have the maximum(100) of EACH spell you think is important for EACH character(Thrust me,you don't want to run out of Cure during a boss fight) and EVERYTIME you use "Draw" it count as a turn so you can't attack and Draw at the same(Until you get the Double or the Triple spell if you didn't miss it)and as far as I remember there is no ether or elixir to give you more spells. It might it sounds very painful, but its not that bad.

Hmmm, so, at the end of a fight do you lose all the spells you've 'drawn'? Or can you stock them up over time?

No you don't lose them, you keep it until you use them.

That's good. We'll see if Santa thinks I deserve it for Xmas then.... or else, I'll pick it up in January xD

I'll just point out that magic being junctioned to your stats basically means you don't want to actually use magic, because doing so will make your characters weaker

The game also has lots of ridiculously obscure or difficult to find secrets, and to stand a fighting chance, you'll need to find a lot of them.

Finally, the Draw grinding will often get in the way of the flow of the story, If you're playing a game for the story, there are better games for it than VIII

Hmm, that does make me think twice.... I only play for story.... That sounds like a total pain in the arse. I think I'll still get it, but only if I get the guide with it

:3

But yeah, VIII isn't really a game to be enjoyed without a guide

I don't think it's quite as good as IX but it is definitely better than FFVII. The only magic I ever drew was from draw points, so no grinding basically, and I didn't get stuck once (until the final dungeon but hey, it's the final dungeon). To be honest you only need the guide to find where to fight Bahamut since you can refine an item he gives you into 100 Megalixirs because the final boss is VERY hard but that's it really. You might want to get everyones Ultimate weapon too.
