Wii U Sells 400,000 Units In First Week

Posted

Nintendo has revealed that 400,000 Wii U consoles were sold during the system’s first week on sale. In an interview with CNET, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed the figure, also noting that 300,000 Wii consoles were sold in the same week.

"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenishstock," Fils-Aime said. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."

Nintendo also had a good week for handheld sales, with Fils-Aime noting 3DS and DS sales of 250,000 and 275,000 respectively. Fils-Aime said the 3DS “continues on record-setting pace,” reiterating last week’s announcement that more than 6 million 3DS systems have been sold thus far. By comparison, the original Wii sold 600,000 units during its first 8 days on sale back in 2006.

So, what are your thoughts on this wonderful news?

I was one of them :D

The Xbox 360, a 7 year old console, managed to beat the Wii U on it's opening week with around 750,000 sales.

Why does the age matter?

Like, does it being a 7 year old console have any bearing on what you said?

To me it seems more likely that people would want to buy the latest console (Wii U) than buy something old that is approaching the end of it's lifespan but apparently I am wrong. Nintendo had to have messed up big time with promoting this thing. They failed to appeal to many gamers who are just dying to have a new console, and the more casual players who tend to lean more toward nintendo products.

But the 360 was the latest console when it sold that much... so why does the seven year thing matter?

Kinda glad I decided to wait.  Although I did see one in the store about a week ago.

It wasn't the latest console when it sold that much, I'm talking about last week which was the Wii U's opening week.
