Golden Sun - Series Discussion

Posted

Does anyone here like Golden Sun?  I was just curious, since I love it and I've partly thought Kingdom Hearts was similar.  If you do like it, which game is your favorite?  I'm torn between The Lost Age and Dark Dawn, but overall I think I prefer the latter.

I love them all!!!  Just look at my sig!  :3

I really wonder where they are going with it right now, though.  That last one was like "Wooo, we almost destroyed the world, but hey!  We finally got that stupid feather!" and then it was all DUN DUN DUUUUN!!!!  And ...   they really just need to make the next game.  I want Isaac back.  >:]

OMG I love the golden sun series I played and beat the first one but I couldn't play the second one so I just watched a playthrough, and I want to get dark dawn but I don't have enough money why hasn't it gone down in value WHY! so I'll just wait to get add it to my Video Game collection for 3ds so far I have KHDDD, Zelda Oot, and Kid Icarus Uprising. Somehow I also haven't managed to spoil myself with any of the story of dark dawn so I hope I can buy it before I get spoiled.

how is that game actually, never came around it?

I love your siggie image!  I'd noticed it before, but never truly thought about what I was seeing there, hehe.  I'm totally with you in that I would really love to see another game, especially after that cliffhanger of an ending we got in Dark Dawn.

Actually, the price did recently drop from its original $34.99 at most stores, and you can find it for $13 at Amazon (link).  I bet you'll really enjoy the third one; it's incredible!  I did miss some of the original cast, though, along with the difficulty level of the original two.

It's a very wonderful game series built up of three titles.  The latest installment was released a couple years ago for the DS.  It kind of reminds me of Zelda with all the puzzle-solving, but otherwise it bears similarities to some of the more recent Final Fantasies and, strangely, Kingdom Hearts.  The battles are turn-based, and it features an open-world map with various dungeons.  There creatures called Djinn that you can collect, which you can equip to create new Psynergy (which is magic, basically) abilities to use within dungeons, battles, et cetera.

Here's a trailer, if you'd like to see a little bit of what it's about:

Dude, they had it for 8 dollars at Toys-R-Us when my mother made me go shopping after Thanksgiving.  I got all excited even though I already own it.

No idea.  I'm not complaining, though.  :D

Yeah, go get it!  Though honestly, I have no idea why the price dropped so greatly.  I think it happened about six months ago or so, but I might be wrong.

I hope you enjoy it!

Aw, that one's so cool!  It looks like the artist used chalk pastels, which is always so lovely.  Thanks for sharing!

This is one of my favorites; I used it as an avatar on another site about a year ago:

(As you can probably tell, Amiti's my favorite character. :D)

Did the characters thought process in these games bother anyone else?  Hahah!  I dunno.  I enjoy the Golden Sun games a great deal, but the characters make me laugh (in a good way). Jenna, for example.  In Lost Age, she's pretty much saying "Yeeeah, we're gonna have to FIGHT ISAAC."  And I was all "Yo, Jenna, you know how you are childhood friends and all?  Weeelllll, I was thinking that maybe you could probably just TALK to Isaac?  I'm sure he will be very happy to see that you are alright, and I'm sure you could explain this all to him nicely without fighting to the death???"  And Jenna is all "Nuuuuu, we are going to have to FIGHT!  :D :D :D "

And I was all

Heheh, and then in the newer installment, Dark Dawn, at the end with the tower thing going on.  The whole party is standing there, looking up at the crazy light beams, and of course they say "Yooo, main character.  Your duty.  We're all your best friends and stuff, but the world needs to be saved.  Go up there with no protection whatsoever and die from the radiation."  And I was sitting here, thinking "Oh, yeah, world to save.  I'll just go up there and die or whatever."  And then they just watch you, and you try the first time and fall down, and they just say "Yeah, you suck at dying.  Go push that world saving button now."  And so you try again, and you fall again, and they just stand there, encouraging you to go and die faster, and so you try that third time and go flying off the twenty foot tower AGAIN, and they just look around as if to say "Well, I guess the world is screwed, because Matthew here isn't getting back up for some reason, and none of us want to go and die from light exposure ourselves..."  And THEN, Matthew pretty much dies (what else would you call that move he pulled?), and they don't even care.  The two of them that do notice (if you use Sveta's mind reading powers, they say so) are just amused about it.  Rude, Kraden...

These are my two favorite cases of character logic in Golden Sun.  Just needed to rant for a minute.  [endrant/]   :]

And maybe I shouldn't write these things so late at night early in the morning.  My brain isn't all the way here at times like these.  I'll probably come back in the morning later today and edit this...

Good morning.

I effin love the Golden Sun series!!! Lost Age is easily my favorite, the amount of extra content and the difficulty of the game itself was amazing. Dark Dawn was way too easy in my opinion. The last section of the game, in one battle will net you 30,000 experience roughly (its been a while so dont hate me if im wrong) and i wouldnt complain if the whole battle didnt take ONE TURN. dont get me started on the final boss. but dont get me wrong, I loved the game. the story was excellent, and the gameplay was as fun as the other installments, almost better. they screwed up a few of the summons IMO *cough*Thor*cough* but overall it was good. cannot wait for the next game though, im hoping they fix the difficulty issue. kids these days dont know what we had to deal with as far as difficulty goes back in the day (says the 19 year old -_-)

I think you're exactly right on the experience levels at the end, pretty sure those dark guys drop 30,000-60,000 exp and a Water of Life. Also, I liked Thor's animation. He kills enemies with a rocket-propelled sparkplug. Also, just pointing out, they made the summon animations better than they ever were.Dark Dawn is probably my favorite, mostly because of the fact that they cut out most of the Psynergy items that you could walk right by and not know, like the Lash Gem. I had to spend about an hour backtracking to that one temple so that I could progress.

Good morning.

Yeah, I've kind of felt the same way about some of the character's reactions and dialogue, namely Jenna.  She's always been one that I've had troubles reading (and also figuring out just who's side she was on).  I actually hadn't thought much of the final scenes until you mentioned it, but I agree that it was a bit...mystifying.  But in the first games, heh, I couldn't decide whether Kraden was a good guy or just trying to fool the others and at any moment he'd pull of his mask and go, "BWAHAHAH!  It was I that has tried to ruin you all!"

Or...uh, something like that. :P

While I love Dark Dawn, its difficulty level is the one major qualm I have about it.  All the battles were FAR too easy! including the final battle at the end (and yes, I think that fight alone was bizarre).  I would love a fourth game, but yes, I do hope they do make the later games more complicated.  Because, personally, I thought some of the puzzles were pretty simple in comparison to The Lost Age.

And definitely!  Games were much harder back in the golden age of video gaming.  I mean, just take a look at the Mario games; they're living proof that video games have gone soft. (And no, I'm pretty certain that it's not just players have gotten good, as much I would like to believe that...)

So, what were some of your favorite Golden Sun dungeons, guys?  For me I loved the Barai Temple in Dark Dawn, along with this other dungeon whose name continues to slip my mind.  Y'know the one with all the zodiac symbols and the rooms you had to solve puzzles in after leaving Passaj through the clouds?  Yeah, that place.

I liked Suhallah Desert, Jupiter Lighthouse (Isaac! :D  )  and the Apollo Ascent/Sanctum (if only for the epic music).

Also, the first time I played through the first game, I remember that I somehow got all the way through one of the forests onto the other side of the map without getting the item you need to get through the forest onto the other side of the map...  maybe it was a glitch or something, but I had to have my brother find a way all the way back around the world for me.  Not sure how, it was a long time ago.  xD   That was a pretty awesome moment for me.

"Rocket-propelled sparkplug" that's cool? Compared to the earlier one where he would fall from the heavens in a bolt of lightning and smite his foes with his godly power? Like a true Norse god would, not by riding in on his faithful hammer and transform it into something as dumb as a "rocket-propelled sparkplug". Make that original animation in the updated graphics, and it would make me one happy gamer. Thor's was the only one I had a problem with really. and the optional Psynergy items were really cool in my opinion, it made you actually explore every part of the game. Was it a pain? At times, yes, but at the same time the makers wanted the most gameplay out of their world they created. Like the Halt gem in GS1, I didn't even know that existed until I played The Lost Age, and it let me go back and play the first one and get some new experiences. (sorry for the rant lol)

YES! Thank you for sharing similar opinions, it makes me happy to actually share mine xD

My favorite dungeon/place/whatever is probably Crossbone Isle, that place was awesome to discover and even cooler to finish and feel like a badass :D

I guess you're right there.  Though Boreas was an ice machine in the first two.

Yeah that is one change to the summons that I liked. Boreas always made me just chuckle, especially if I won the battle with it. It's like "Suck it, you just got killed by an oversized snow cone maker!"

Did any of you ever watch that opera house golden sun commercial?  That one was special.  Crystallux didn't even really show up until the Belinsk opera house massacre in Dark Dawn... and it isn't really the part of the game I really think of when someone says "Golden Sun,"  but they featured it in the commercial.  Kind of, I guess...?  Maybe they made that summon just to make fun of their old commercial?  xD

Hahah!

To be honest, I didn't use summons much *sheepish grin*.  I did use some, like Crystallux and Eclipse, but apart from that I didn't use them much in Dark Dawn to complain about their cutscenes.  One thing I can comment is that I'm glad you can skip through watching their cutscene, since I've played through waaaaaay too many games that you must watch the summon and/or ability again and again until you want to punch it, lol.  (Well, not really--just memorize it. ;))

I've actually never been to Crossbone Isle, I don't think.  Is it an additional dungeon?

Wow, interesting comercial!  I'm assuming it was fan-made though and not truly in a commercial, right?  Either way, they did an incredible job on it.  Though I'm having a hard time figuring out how this fits in with the original 2 Golden Sun games, since, as you said, Crystallux arrived in Dark Dawn...

Summons to me are just another way to completely destroy my opponent, which is my way of playing in pretty much all RPGs lol

Which is usually why I get stuck on bosses in otherwise easy games :(

And yes, Crossbone Isle is an additional dungeon, in both GS1 and Dark Dawn. Can't remember if it made an appearance in The Lost Age though. I think the additional dungeon in that one is just the terrible trek to get to the Dulhalland boss (I think that's what his name was)

Crossbone Isle didn't appear in TLA. There were various bonus places where you can find the last 5 summons. Anemos Inner Sanctum had Iris, guarded by Dullahan. Dullahan is from Irish mythology, if you're curious.
