You can't battle or trade, but you can transfer pokemon from HG/SS to B/W/B2/W2.

You can transfer the pokemon (not trade) to black and white. Everything else no.

You can send pokemon from GEN 4 up to GEN 5 but not visa versa. Think Pal Park. It's a bit like that. You have to beat the game, then go to the poke-transfer

In Black and White you have to beat the game in order to be able to transfer Pokémons from Gen 4 games.

Once you do, you need 2 Nintendo DS sistems (One with the Black version, and another with a Gen 4 game)

In Black, you enter the Poké Transfer Lab (Next to Black City), and you need to have a box with 6 spaces.

Then you use the DS Download Play function on the DS with the Gen 4 game.

Then you choose 6 Pokémons to be transfered (They need to be in the boxes)

Then once you've chosen the Pokémons, you play a mini-game where you catch them. If you fail to catch some of the Pokémons, they remain in the Gen 4 game, while the ones you captured go to your Black version.
