Why is BoA's song in Japanese? Because it is the first Japanese song I've ever listened to and I didn't realized she was a Korean Artist until 2006. She is someone I really admire for the past 10 years. =)

That's all for this week! Hope you guys enjoy these set of songs and look forward to next Sunday! Until then, have an awesome day today!

Girls' Generation to make cameo appearance on Webtoon.

Posted Image

Girls’ Generation will make cameo appearances as cartoon characters for the webtoon “ENT”. “ENT” is a new upcoming webtoon production by Yoon Inhwan, author of “The New Undercover Royal Inspector”, and is also co-produced by SM Entertainment. The second illustration of the webtoon was released on April 30th, showcasing the nine girls in their “The Boys” promotional outfits. The girls are to have cameos in order to add a sense of realism to the series.

“ENT” is a fictional story about two people. The first person is A (fake name), a normal high school student who is the vocal singer of an SM rookie group called “Born on 4th of July”. The second person is Foxstar, a famous fanfiction writer. This webtoon will be about the fanfiction that Foxstar writes based on insider information that she obtains from A about SM, and the incidents that follow after its publication.

The CEO of “Ylab”, the production company of “ENT”, approached SM Entertainment about this webtoon when production first started. SM Entertainment has since fully cooperated in the production of this webtoon, viewing its purpose in a positive light.

SM Entertainment’s artists will appear with their real names in the webtoon, and it is predicted that the series will garner the attention of both manhwa and K-Pop fans alike.

The webtoon “ENT” will be publicly released in black and white through a website belonging to Club Sunday, one of Japan’s biggest manhwa publishing companies. It will then be opened to the Korean public on July 4th through Naver’s webtoon services.

Soshified Malaysia Exclusive: An Interview With Brandon Fraley & Jamelle Fraley

Posted Image

This morning, SSFMY landed an exclusive interview, which I had the honor of interviewing with two out of three composers of “Twinkle” from Jam Factory which is the lovely couple, Brandon & Jamelle Fraley.

The title track, “Twinkle”, written and produced by Brandon Fraley, Jamelle Fraley, and Javier Solis, is a dance-pop track, with influences of funk, electropop and go-go. Taking inspiration from music during the 70's and 80's, specifically, that of Stevie Wonder.

Brandon Fraley is a graduate of Belmont University who you can now find him on tour with RCA/19 record Nashville recording artist, Danny Gokey. Danny was 3rd runner-up on Season 8 of American Idol. Brandon is also a songwriter for Sony Music Publishing in Los Angeles. As a touring and studio musician for 10 years, Brandon has played and worked in the studio worked with such artists as Gretchen Wilson, Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic), Jaci Velasquez, & Tommy Simms. Jamelle Fraley is also a graduate of Belmont University, you can now find her currently on tour singing background vocals for Carrie Underwood. Carrie Underwood was the winner of Season 8 of American Idol. Brandon and Jamelle both have been married to each other for almost 10 years.

SSFMY: First off, I am administrator "Dookong" from Girls' Generation's fanclub in a South East Asia country, Malaysia that is Soshified (Malaysia), a branch of the international fanclub, Soshified. Thank you once again for granting us this interview in such a short notice. It's really nice to be here and have an interview with you two. Everyone is really excited for "Twinkle".

Brandon Fraley & Jamelle Fraley (BF& JF): We are very excited about the initial response from the fans. Everyone seems to really like "Twinkle" so far!

SSFMY: We are definitely loving it! What was your initial response when you heard that you will be working with Girls' Generation sub-unit, TaeTiSeo?

(BF& JF): We were completely blown away! We were already huge fans of Girls' Generation, so when we first heard that they were considering recording "Twinkle" for their new sub unit, we were SO excited!!! We just could not believe it!

SSFMY: That's awesome! I'm surprised that you have known about Girls' Generation in the first place!

BF: I have been writing songs for Jam Factory for KPOP for the last few years. I have written songs for Super Junior, Shinee, Misia, and more. When Girls' Generation came out, I always hoped to write a song for them. I liked many of their songs including "Mr. Taxi" & "The Boys"

SSFMY: Wow! That's incredible. I have to agree with you, "The Boys" is awesome. So, how was the songwriting and recording process for “Twinkle”?

(BF& JF): Well, we wrote the song "Twinkle" here in the US. After they heard the song, they hired more musicians to finish the song. We were not there when they recorded the vocals but we are SO happy with how the final song sounds! The songwriting process was fun. We just wanted to write a really fun, upbeat song that was fun to sing, fun to listen to, and hopefully fun to dance to!

BF: My wife & I wrote the song with our friend Javier Solis, who is an incredible drummer!!

Posted Image

SSFMY: You three are amazing! Twinkle is such an amazing song! A lot of us has been repeating the song since it was released earlier. So, what inspires the song "Twinkle"?

(BF& JF): We just thought that "Twinkle" was a cool name for a song. It sounded like a song that should have a lot of energy and power to it! We knew that the singers in TaeTiSeo had AMAZING voices, so we knew that they would sing the song really well & we were right! They sound FANTASTIC singing that song! We are just SO happy that TaeTiSeo recorded Twinkle.

BF: I can't imagine anyone else singing that song better than them! Over the past few years, I have been so lucky to have so many great artists record my songs. Super Junior recorded 2 of my songs "Sunflower" & "My Only Girl". Shinee recorded my songs "Your Name" & "Honesty". Misia recorded my song "Tonight" & Jang Ri In recorded a song I wrote called "Y". Also, I just have to say that none of those songs would have ever been recorded had it not been for my AMAZING publishing company Jam Factory!! They are the best!!! They are also the reason that TaeTiSeo found my song "Twinkle"!

SSFMY: Wow! That's really amazing. So, how long was the songwriting and recording process for “Twinkle”?

BF: We wrote the song in about 2 days. The recording process took about a week, if I remember correctly. After they heard our original recording, they spent some more time finishing it up for TaeTiSeo's version.

SSFMY: "Twinkle" is absolutely amazing. I was in love with the song when it was released as a teaser. Even if it was just 17 seconds. The three teasers have been receiving so much love from everyone since the very beginning and “Twinkle” is climbing the iTunes charts all over the world as we speak and that’s before the physical album is even released! Did you expect the mini album to do that well?

(BF& JF): No! We always hoped that "Twinkle would do well, but we never thought that it would take off like it has. I looked at YouTube earlier today, and when you add up all 3 teaser video's, there have been almost 9 MILLION views!!! We are just speechless! We hope everyone likes the music video as much as they like the song! We know that Girls' Generation has always put out GREAT music! We were just hoping that the fans would think that "Twinkle" was as good as some of their other great songs! So far so good! :)

Posted Image

SSFMY: It is a great song already, to be honest! We will definitely love the MV as much as we love the song. Having to work with so many great artistes before, what are your thoughts about Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun of Girls’ Generation?

(BF& JF): I think they are so incredible. Their voices are just absolutely amazing! I honestly can't think of anyone else singing that song now that I've heard them sing it! We are planning to make a trip to one of their concerts sometime this year so we can meet them & thank them in person for recording our song!

SSFMY: I had to quote them for this. Taeyeon said, "When we were recording and dancing, we always had fun. Even if MV shooting went for an entire day, I never got tired of the song."While Tiffany said, "The more I listen to Twinkle, the more addicting it gets." It seems that they really love the song just as much as we are.

(BF& JF): Wow! Thank you for showing us that! I'm SO glad they liked the song so much!

SSFMY: My pleasure. Are you looking forward in working with them again in the future?

BF: ABSOLUTELY! I am already writing new songs for send them for their next recording! I would be so honored if they would record more of my songs!

SSFMY: We’ll be crossing our fingers for it to happen. Any last words for the fans?

BF: From myself, my wife Jamelle, & Javier Solis, we just have to say once again thank you SO MUCH to TaeTiSeo for recording our song. It is such an honor. Also, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to the fans!!! All of the success that "Twinkle" is having is all because of YOU!!!!! We also want to thank Jam Factory for everything they've done for us as songwriters. Feel free to follow us on twitter as we would love to hear any feedback you have. We also will try to answer any questions any of the fans have about the song. You can follow us at @bfraley @jamelle210 & @javsjoint

SSFMY: Definitely! And that’s a wrap! Thanks so much to you two. I had a lovely time and it really is a pleasure having to do this with you two! I wish you all the best in your future works. Thanks again for spending your time with us!

(BF& JF): Thanks for spending time and talking with us! We look forward to speaking with you again sometime in the future!

From our fan chants: Used to chant their names, but now we got completely mesmerized by them that we agree with everything they're singing -

They sing: 숨겨도 twinkle 어쩌나? (I twinkle even if I'm hidden, what should I do?)

We answer: 숨겨도 twinkle 괜찮아 (You twinkle even if you're hidden, it's perfectly alright)

They sing: 딴 사람들도 다 빛나는 나를 좋아해 (Other people like me too, me who is shining)

We answer: 빛나는 너를 좋

아해 (We like you who's shining)

They sing: 나는 twinkle 티가나 (I twinkle, it's obvious)

We answer: 너는 twinkle 티가나 (You twinkle, it's obvious)

SONEs are like:

You twinkle you're shining it's obvious,

yes yes yes, unconditionally.

(Eyes: *____*)

Tiffany's Nickname is 'Seaweed'

Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD) member Tiffany may be known by her English name, but she’s explained the reason why she shuns her Korean name, and the reason involves a certain marine-dwelling algae.

For the May 3 broadcast of MBC’sJoo Byung Jin Talk Concert

, members from SM’s TVXQ, Super Junior and SNSD embarked on a short trip together as they chatted and shared more about themselves.

During SNSD Tiffany’s self-introduction, Super Junior’s Leeteuk asked her, “Why do you dislike being called by your real name, ‘Hwang Mi Young’?” To this she answered, “[because] my friends call me ‘Hwang Miyeok’ (miyeok

is the Korean word for ‘seaweed′). There even was a rap song about [my Hwang Miyuk nickname].” Tiffany’s ‘Hwang Miyuk’ rap was also heard during the episode.

In addition, the episode also revealed what happened when Super Junior’s Eunhyuk had his first alcoholic drink after twenty seven years, who TVXQ’s Max Changmin would want to replace if he was a Super Junior member, SNSD Seohyun’s ranking of the male artists of SM and other humorous bits.

The episode will air on MBC on May 3.

The K-Pop Explosion

Korean artists such as Girls' Generation and Big Bang are making international music waves

While South Korea is a vital part of the growing economic boom in Asia, the country of nearly 50 million people is exporting more than just consumer electronics and cars these days. Its native popular music, universally known as K-pop, is also finding a growing international audience in places such as the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. And in other Asian markets, including Japan, it's already big business.

In major U.S. cities such as Chicago, Atlanta and Houston, K-pop concerts have sold out venues seating 1,700 to 2,500 music fans. In 2011 the nine-member dance-pop group Girls' Generation sold out New York's hallowed Madison Square Garden. And in Los Angeles, the Korean Music Festival has been a part of the concert season at the 17,000-plus capacity Hollywood Bowl for the past 10 years. Held this year on April 28, the festival featured performances from Korean artists such as Brown Eyed Girls, Im Tae Kyung, Kim Kyung-Ho, and Lena Park, among others.

Christine Ha, a reporter for Los Angeles' The Korea Times, presenters of the annual Korean Music Festival, says the festival now attracts approximately 30 percent non-Koreans.

"We noticed [the growth in audience diversity at the Hollywood Bowl shows] about two or three years ago," says Ha. "It includes the Hispanic community, the Chinese community [and] other Americans … We always sell out."

The sizable Korean-American population in cities such as Los Angeles is certainly helping to fuel the popularity of K-pop in the United States, but the stateside K-pop audience stretches beyond Asian-American demographics.

"When we performed in Los Angeles, New York and Paris, we were shocked and surprised to see that the majority of our fans were non-Asian," says Sunny of Girls' Generation. "That is when we realized how big and influential K-pop was [becoming] around the world."

Joon Ahn, executive vice president for the music business division at Korea's CJ Entertainment & Media, says K-pop first emerged in the '90s with ballad crooners such as Kim Gun Mo and Shin Seung Hun. The first decade of the new millennium has seen the emergence of new stars such as Girls' Generation, Big Bang, Super Junior, and Wonder Girls, with the latter opening for the Jonas Brothers in 2009.

As the international audience for K-pop has broadened, so has its stylistic boundaries, says Ahn. Hip-hop, rock and techno are now freely embraced by some artists in the movement. Snoop Dogg performed on the title track of Girls' Generation's 2011 album, The Boys; Kanye West appeared on JYJ's "Ayyy Girl" in 2010; and the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am will reportedly produce the U.S. debut album by K-pop group 2NE1, an all-female hip-hop group.

Today, many K-pop artists are setting their sights on the international market right away. And while the preparation that some go through is reminiscent of the rigorous artist development practices employed by Barry Gordy's Motown Records in the '60s, Ahn believes this attention to detail has contributed to the success of many of these groups.

"In recent years, Korean artists have planned their overseas activities as soon as they make their local debut," says Ahn. "Therefore, vocal training, dance rehearsals and physical workouts are only the beginning. Lessons in foreign languages and etiquette are given as well."

Some K-pop performers are recruited from other countries such as Thailand, China, Japan, and the United States. Tiffany of Girls' Generation was born Stephanie Hwang in San Francisco. NichKhun of K-pop boy band 2PM, who was born and partly educated in Southern California and is of Thai-Chinese descent, feels it's a benefit to have members in a group that can fluently speak and sing in other languages, particularly English.

"It is a big advantage having two English speakers in our group," notes NichKhun.

"It's Taecyeon and me. To be able to communicate with the fans is very important. So if 2PM ever makes a debut in English-speaking countries, we can connect with the fans better."

Ahn believes the growth in digital media is a major reason why K-pop has become a global entity. The video for the Girls' Generation 2009 single "Gee" has been viewed more than 73 million times on YouTube. The song became the longest-running No. 1 song on the Korean Broadcasting System's chart, and their self-titled album, released in Japan in June 2011, went double platinum, a first for a Korean girl group.

"The channel for movement of music is now very simple with digital," Ahn observes. "Even the file size is convenient for it. Compared to movies, musical theater, or TV series that have a bigger language barrier, music's appeal is communicated through rhythm and visual impact. YouTube and other social networks have contributed the most to spreading music of all kinds and allowing them to be heard [by] a greater audience."

With commercial success comes increased competition. It's been said that even a few months out of the spotlight can spell trouble for a successful K-pop group because there are many artists clamoring for attention.

"The K-pop scene is very competitive because there are so many people who are talented and younger who also want to be a part of the scene," says NichKhun. "Recently, we have been away working on our album in Japan and we're already starting to see so many new young groups. So we have to make sure to maintain our popularity in Korea while expanding to other markets, which doubles or triples the work. It is not easy."

Adds Tiffany, "Now with most groups trying to expand and break through into other markets and territories, the competition is that much stronger. So we are so thankful to our fans for supporting us."

Questions remain regarding K-pop's potential for growth and influence. Will the scene be able to generate artists for the ages similar to the Beatles and Michael Jackson, who both moved from being teen idols to timeless international artists? While that remains to be seen, K-pop artists are certainly reaping the benefits of the genre's current success.
