VHS' decline was approx 2003-2006. But when will DVDs decline? I'm sure distributors are looking forward to the day they can solely focus on Blu-ray Discs.

Both will probably decline and everything become digital copies.

Most digital copies at the moment are only in SD.

its a 50/50 a lot of people buy DVD and Blu-ray Discs so it might decline sooner or later.

According to my technology teacher Blu-rays are set to decline more than DVDs, a lot of people won't see the ppoint of spending $/£5-15 extra just so it's a "little bit sharper".  Furthermore, people can rent movies on their broadband box, and just a company like netflix or lovefilm and stream the movies, in good quality without it taking up any physical space.  I don't think DVD's will die soon since there'll be oldies who like to keep to what they know, but I don't think they'll decline and suddenly a wave of Blu-ray will come in, digital copies will prevail.

There's also obviously piracy.  A lot of people aren't buying either and just to download a digital copy through torrent or use a streaming site.  Even so most choose to watch the film on their pc or put it on a usb rather than burn it unless they are intending to sell.

Digital libraries are the future.

Video game consoles say otherwise.

It's more than a "little big sharper". The bigger your TV, the more you see the difference.

Digital libraries are still another decade away.

I'm sure blu-ray is going to be the chosen format for video games.  But for movies it's pointless, unless someones a tech-junkie or a hardcore fan of a movie series most wouldn't bother investing the extra cash for something they can get at a cheaper price that is the same movie.

If people stopped buying DVDs they would die out. It's supply and demand. I don't see them dieing out anytime soon. If at all. A lot of people still buy dvds. I like blu-ray but I still buy DVDs. I imagine it's the same for a lot of people. However, if they were to lower blu-ray to the same price as DVD I doubt people would see the need to keep buying DVD.

Depends on sales and what happens in the future. No way to tell right now.

I don't like the idea of everything becoming digital. It's bad enough I lost $40 worth of TV episodes from iTunes. Same with my 3DS. Sure it'd be easier if I downloaded and bought all my games from the store, but what if I run out of memory? Space? What if I wipe my system clean? I'd rather lose an actual game cartridge and have a chance finding it, than having it gone completely as if I never bought it.

Christ, I still buy VHSs.

Within 100 years.

Trust me, it's not pointless. There is a definite difference.

I don't think DVD is going anywhere anytime soon, though. Not enough people have blu-ray players and the like at this point. Give it another five years and maybe then we'll talk about DVD's going away.

How did you lose them? You just need to sign-in to iTunes and they'll let you redownload your past purchases for that computer.

Oh. Purchased songs, yes... eheheh.

Implying they haven't already...

DVD sales have been going down at an increasing rate. Blu Ray, digital downloads, and streaming are the preferred methods of watching a movie at home these days.

The only time I ever buy a DVD is because it wasn't available in one of the mentioned formats.
