"Activist" tends to involve violence or intent of violence on their part as well as going against the law, and regardless of the cause it has to be stopped.

True but Russia really hates gays. Like they are now arresting openly gay tourists for just being gay, and they repeatedly beat up gays too. Whether the activists were violent or not, its safe to assume that it had to do with the fact that Russia really hates gays.

Agreed in this case, but I know activists myself (not for this cause) who's only contribution to society is vandalizing stores and property.  Doing so only makes the cause they're working towards look like a violent group of terrorists to the public.  Peaceful protesters is always viewed in a better light than activist.
