Valve Teases Major Announcements for Monday

Posted

Valve will make three separate announcements next week, one of which presumably involves the rumored Steam Box.

Based on a minimalist teaser site — which sports a fiery blue planet-like image, three symbols, and a cat wearily staring at an old-school game controller (below) — the company will make the first big reveal at 1 p.m. ET on Monday.

"Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads," the website said. "This year we've been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living room."

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell recently promised upcoming news about new hardware opportunities, but is keeping mum on the details, which could be at least partially sussed out based on the teaser site. Below the headline "The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014," three rings encompass faded symbols — a circle, a circle sitting off-center between two brackets, and two circles separated by a plus sign.

The company makes no reference to what the markings mean, but it seems likely that each circle represents a Steam Box.

Valve also tips plans to enlist the help of the Steam community during development, hoping to "shape the future of Steam" in a way that appeals most to users.

There is no word yet on when the remaining two announcements will be made; keep an eye on the teaser site for future countdowns.

Valve's Steam for Linux efforts date back more than a year: In July 2012, the game maker confirmed it was building a version of Steam for Linux to run on Ubuntu 12.04. The move was sparked in part due to Newell's concern that Windows 8 would turn out to be "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space."

A closed beta arrived in November, and Valve released its Steam for Linux client as a free public download in February 2012. Before the end of the year, Valve's Big Picture modedropped the beta tags and launched publicly for gamers who wanted to access Steam titles on a larger screen.

Valve did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

So, what do you guys think? I'm guessing that if they aren't all different versions of the Steam Box, one of the other two will be Source 2... No clue about the other one though. I'm guessing it'll be some Steam update and not a new game (Here come the HL3 jokes...)

*Sigh* Should've known it'd come to this, this is the exact thing that killed the Half Life discussion thread I tried to make. -_- Why do I even bother posting Valve news? Not like anyone seems to care much when I try to...

I'd be so mad and laughing my ass off at the same time. Would be the best trolling I've ever seen if they did that.

Cant wait to find out, thanks for the share :)
