Do the Sword Art Online Blu-Rays/DVDs Censor?

Posted

I don't know if anyone on here has these, but I might as well ask. So, on the Toonami dub for SAO, they've had to censor out some strong language on occasion. I looked up the rating on the DVD/BR, and it's 13+. However, I assumed that the censoring was just for the televised version. I wouldn't be allowed to watch them probably if they didn't have the censors Toonami does (Note: It's only some of the stronger instances that are censored, like F-bombs. It'd be fine if it was something else, but I've got a younger brother who can't hear those kinds of things. For anyone saying to keep him out, that's not really possible. Please give me a proper answer, not something sarcastic.)

In other words: Do they censor in the SAO DVDs?

16.5 wasn't in the anime thankfully. ._. I don't think they will when they publish the Light Novels though... Thankfully it's in a special volume that's just backstory stuff... Including the chapters about Sachi, Silica, and Lisbeth I believe. Oh well, I don't want to read 16.5 xD

Huh, my friend has only shown me the sub version so far, and I don't think they've dropped the F-bomb as far as I've gotten, but I am within the first 10 episodes or so. I haven't seen the official dub, but I would like to, especially if it's on Toonami. At first I thought you meant boobs and blood and stuff like that, which aren't really much of a problem either, but as far as language goes, I can't really say.

The official subs for SAO have no swearing at all if I remember correctly. The dub has quite a bit, but it's usually nothing too bad... Emphasis on usually. xD They bleep out all the F-bombs, and I'm hoping the Blu-rays will too since my parents are cancelling our DirecTV subscription and I want to legally watch the SAO dub, since that's the only thing on TV I actually watch.

Wait, they bleep them? What's the point then!? Why not just NOT write the words into the script if you're going to censor them anyway? It's a waste of time. I can understand trying to stay true to the original, but you loose points for that if you have the intention of bleeping them out on all other releases anyway. You may as well have not said those words at all, it wouldn't change the emphasis or tone that much. Bleach wouldn't be any different if they never said the word "bastard" every other scene or so, but they did say those and they never bleeped them, so why are they doing such a pointless move now if it could have been avoided altogether in the first place?

I don't know if the DVDs censor them, but they're apparently 13+, so I'd have to assume they do. I kinda had the idea that it might've been a reference to a censor in an MMO, since they censor certain words in those.

I remember reading 16.5 in the web novel, but the anime implied that it happened.

The anime implied it, yeah, but it was never shown. :/
