http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Electric_Tale_of_Pikachu_monthly_issues

In the case of the above link, images of the covers of the monthly printing of the "Electric Tale of Pikachu" manga are depicted. I own a few of them, but one of them (Electric Pikachu Boogaloo issue 4) is special in a way that I will explain.

After Ash sets off to earn gym badges before entering the Orange League, he is confronted by three trainers, and each of them has a Pokémon, with all three being depicted in only two panels. One of them is clearly a Beedrill, the second one is fairly recognizable as being a Spearow (even though it looks more like an angry parrot), and the third one is the mystery Pokémon in question.

Now that I think about it, what it could be is a Hitmonchan, but it seems very "off" in its presentation. It has a similar head-shape and body structure to one, but it has strange-looking "plates" on its body, it has detailed muscles, it does not have boxing gloves, its eyes look almost reptilian, and its legs remind me of the legs of a Mewtwo. It also has a distinctive oval-shaped jewel in the middle of its forehead. It almost looks like it was meant to be a depiction of what a Hitmonchan evolution would have looked like. The artist of the series purposely makes his depictions of Pokémon look strangely detailed, but this is definitely a more interesting case.

I have failed to find an image of either panel, and I am not lying about it, but if anyone finds an image, it would be interesting to hear what the people here think about it.

I agree, looks like a stylised hitmonchan.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu is an adaptation of the anime and it came after the anime itself was aired in Japan

Therefore, whoever was in charge of writing the Electric Tale of Pikachu made a couple of changes that wasn't present in the anime

Not to mention that the art style is different, which would explain the differences in some of the Pokemon's design.

As for Hitmonchan's evolution,I heard a rumor that there was a plan for one...until they decided to add Hitmontop in Gen 2

alongside Tyorge which evolves into either Hitmonlee,Hitmonchan or Hitmontop

If I recall, the anime had a Hitmonchan too so thats what it has to be

It looks like a mix of Geodude, Golem, and Hitmonchan. :P

That does not help.

Scene in question: http://www.mangago.com/read-manga/pokemon_the_electric_tale_of_pikachu/tr/88243/page/159/

It's pretty obviously stylised, not ambiguous at all. The anime equivalent scene had the same three (Spearow/Beedrill/Hitmonchan).

There is clearly something wrong with me, then, because I did not recognize it until yesterday.
