Spyro 3 - Year Of The Dragon, released back in October - November 2000, this game is the sequel to Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage. If Spyro 2 was already a great sequel to the first game, how does the third game of the series work out?
When I got this game back in 2010, I was hyped. I had a great experience with Spyro 2, and I was hoping that this game would be even better! What did I think back then? Well I wasn't able to finish it back then, so I picked the game recently, and now I have a better opinion about it.
And my opinion is... it's a bit behind from what I expected.
Don't get me wrong, this game is really good. But there are some things that I don't like about this game, which I'll get into later.
First, the story. the story will be in spoilers, although the story is really quick. Those surprise factors are sweet (:
So Spyro and Hunter are back, and they are sleeping on a peaceful morning on the Dragon World. The elder dragons, Spyro and Hunter are sleeping close to dragons eggs, until a cloacked woman comes out of a hole, with some rhynocs following her. The cloacked person and the rhynocs start stealing the eggs, without waking up Spyro and the others. Unluckily for the cloacked woman, she steps on Hunter's tail, which makes him scream, and in the process waking up everybody. Spyro proceeds to stop her, but he failed. The cloacked woman delivers the eggs to somekind of blue dinnosaur, known as the Sorceress. The Sorceress tells the cloacked woman, known as Bianca, to close all the holes to let nobody go through. The elder dragons tell Spyro that he's the only one that can save the eggs, since he's the only one that can go through the holes that lead to the Forgotten Worlds, where the eggs are.
As Spyro and Hunter collect the eggs, the Sorceress tries to stop them with her army of rhynocs, but to no avail. She orders Bianca to stop them, since that without the dragon eggs, the magic of the Forgotten Worlds would dissapear. And this is most unfortunate to Bianca, since she wants to become a Sorceress as well. Bianca just tries to scare Spyro and Hunter (where she failed obviously), and knowing of her failure, the Sorceress forces Bianca to summon a monster to stop Spyro and Hunter. Where she fails again.
The Sorceress heard of Bianca's failure, and decides to take charge of the matter. She conjures yet another monster, after Spyro and Hunter collected more eggs, but the monster again had no chance against Spyro. The Sorceress decides to lock up Hunter, after he fell into a trap, and tries to defeat Spyro yet with another monster, but our dragon defeated that monster with no difficulties.
Bianca, who already had some feelings for Hunter after he saved her life, learned that the Sorceress only wanted the dragon eggs, so that she could perform a spell to become immortal, so Bianca frees Hunter, and teams up with Spyro to defeat the Sorceress. Together, they were able to defeat the Sorceress, and rescue all the dragon eggs. Bianca and Hunter start to date, and everything is at peace again in both the Dragon and the Forgotten worlds.
Now for the gameplay. For a sequel, it should fix the errors of the previous game. It does maintain the same mechanics of the previous game, although this game's control is a bit clunky for my taste. There where times that I got hit, or died because of the controls, especially in side quests.
One of the focus of this game is the multiple playable characters. While some of them are really fun to play with, such as James Byrd, some of them are just really hard to play with, such as Sheila and Agent 9. Sheila's the worst in my opinion, she plays just as Spyro, but the collision detectors of her attacks are atrocious. There were times I was pretty sure I got the enemy, and the enemy was still there. And I would get hit. Agent 9's just as bad if you don't like FPS games (like me). The amount of times I died as Agent 9 was dreadful.
The main focus of this game is to collect dragon eggs. While some of them are really easy to get, some of them will make you almost ragequit. The level that does this the most is Haunted Tomb. MY GOD HAUNTED TOMB. If you don't watch a LP of this game before you go to Haunted Tomb, you will die. A lot. The level in itself is hard. The sidequests are even worse.
Don't think this game only has flaws. It does have flaws, but the good points of the game are marvelous. The music is great, I hear the OST of the game a bit too often. The characters of the levels are great as well, some of them are just downright hilarious. And the levels themselves are really great too. Except for Haunted Tomb.
Overall, this game is great, just as great as the previous two. But, just like the previous games, it has its flaws, but you can overlook them if you don't want the game at 100%. 117% in this case. It has loads of replayability, great music, a good story, and it's a really fun game.
Classification? From Newbie to No Comment, I give it a Groovy (:
So why not?
I can do some reviews to (:
